This essay examines Paul Ricœur’s views on recognition in his book The Course of Recognition. It highlights those aspects that are in some sense surprising, in relation to his previous publications and the general debates on Hegelian Anerkennung and the politics of recognition. After an overview of Ricœur’s book, the paper examines the meaning of “recognition” in Ricœur’s own proposal, in the dictionaries Ricœur uses, and in the contemporary debates. Structural properties of magnesium stearate pseudopolymorphs: effect of temperature.

A thorough review of the relevant literature reveals that the interaction between water vapour and magnesium stearate, in contrast to many other metal soaps, is not properly understood. The structural modifications associated with the up-take or loss of water of vegetable-derived commercial magnesium stearate powders exposed to humid air or vacuum at room temperature are investigated using standard powder X-ray diffractometry. The kinetics of the solid-state phase transformation of xylazine hydrochloride form X to A has been investigated using powder X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis. Three different kinetic models have been used to describe transition kinetics: the Avrami–Erofeev equation, the Cardew equation, and the methodology for simulation of solid-state phase transition kinetics by the combination of nucleation and nuclei growth processes. Nonlinear optical self diffraction effects for a light beam in a liquid crystalline polymer in its isotropic fluid state was observed. This effect is characterized by the absence of a threshold intensity, a diffraction pattern that does not depend on the polarization of the reading beam relative to that of the writing beam and which cannot be disturbed by transversally applied static electrical fields. This effect is attributed to a thermally induced spatial refractive index modulation. The time constants of the response are of the order of ms.
Growth and characterization of self-assembled Cd1−xMgxO (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) nanoparticles on r-sapphire substrates

In this work, the growth of isolated Cd1−xMgxO nanoparticles on r-sapphire substrates is extended to the entire range of Mg content (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) using the spray pyrolysis method. The sizes of the Cd1−xMgxO nanoparticles were in the ranges 4–6 nm and 15–30 nm (with a nanoparticle density of 1010 cm−2). The composition of the nanoparticles was determined using transmission electron microscopy energy dispersive X-ray analysis (TEM-EDAX), while the compound formation was confirmed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Subwavelength surface waves with zero diffraction

We identified nanostructured devices sustaining out-of-plane nondiffracting beams with near-grazing propagation and a transverse beamwidth clearly surpassing the diffraction limit of half a wavelength. This type of device consists of a planar multilayered metal-dielectric structure with a finite number of films deposited on a solid transparent substrate. We assumed that the nondiffracting beam is launched from the substrate. The construction of the subwavelength diffraction-free beam is attended by plane waves which are resonantly transmitted through the stratified medium. This article presents a powerful yet simple program, based on the general one-dimensional kinematic X-ray diffraction (XRD) theory, which calculates the XRD patterns of tailor-made multilayers and thus enables quantitative comparison of measured and calculated XRD data. As the multilayers are constructed layer by layer, the final material stack can be entirely arbitrary.

Time-resolved X-ray diffraction experiments carried out at the beamline BM08-GILDA of ESRF allowed a study of the structural modifications taking place in a Pt/ceria-zirconia catalyst while the CO oxidation reaction was in progress. The capillary tube in which the sample is stored acts effectively as a chemical microreactor that ensures homogeneity of the sample treatments and minimization of diffusion effects. The pressure-induced phase transition of monazite-type ${\mathrm{LaPO}}_{4}$ at $\ensuremath{\approx}26$ GPa is studied by single-crystal x-ray diffraction and second harmonic generation (SHG) up to 31 GPa. The structure of the postmonazite phase of ${\mathrm{LaPO}}_{4}$ has been obtained and it is shown that it corresponds to a post-barite-type structure with an acentric space group $P{2}_{1}{2}_{1}{2}_{1}$. A strong increase of the SHG signal at the transition confirms that the high-pressure polymorph is noncentrosymmetric. Abstract Monolayers of the lipid arachidic acid (C20) and of the phospholid dimyristolyphosphatidic acid (PMDA) have been studied by X-ray reflection and diffraction technique, using a purpose-built Langmuir trough installed at the sample stage of our high-resolution X-ray diffractometer at the DORIS synchroton X-ray source in Hamburg. For comparison we also report data for monolayers of C20 on a solid support using a 10 kW rotating anode X-ray source.
