Central obesity and hypertensionThe role of plasma endothelin

1996

Hypertension and central obesity are two conditions closely linked, but the mechanisms responsible for obesity-associated hypertension are still unclear. In the last few years, several studies addressed the role of endothelin-1 (ET-1) in the development and maintenance of hypertension. This study was designed to evaluate plasma ET-1 in normotensive and hypertensive central obese subjects compared with a lean healthy group. Our final goal was to analyze the relationship between plasma ET-1, blood pressure, and left ventricular structure and function in central obese subjects (both normotensives and hypertensives). ET-levels have been assessed by the radioimmunoassay method in 20 lean normote…

Lymphocyte beta-adrenergic receptors in young subjects with peripheral or central obesity: relationship with central haemodynamics and left ventricul…

1994

This study was designed to evaluate total (t) and surface (s) β-adrenergic receptor (BAR) density and their relationship with central haemodynamics and left ventricular function in young subjects with central or peripheral obesity. A total of 31 obese subjects (BMI ≥30.5 kg. m−2 for males and >27.3 kg. m−2 for females) aged less than 40 years and without other risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (smoking, hypertension, diabetes and lipid abnormalities) were studied. Nine had peripheral obesity and 22 central obesity according to WHR values; there were 20 lean controls (BMI <25 kg. m−2 for males and <24.7 kg. m−2 for females). Casual (c) and 24 h ambulatory mean blood pressures (MBP-24 …

Photochemotherapy Alone or Combined with Interferon Alpha-2a in the Treatment of Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma

1990

Eighty-two patients with either mycosis fungoides (MF) or parapsoriasis en plaques were treated with psoralens ultraviolet A light (PUVA). Clinical and histologic parameters were followed for a period from 6 months to 10 years. Complete clinical clearing of lesions was observed in 51 patients (62%) and most of them were in limited-plaque MF group or parapsoriasis en plaque. The mean total dose of PUVA for complete clearing was less for early MF. Thirty-one patients (38%) relapsed and responded to additional PUVA. Patients in early stages of the disease remained clear for up to 68 months after the first course of PUVA. Post-treatment skin biopsies with early MF showed histologic clearing. A …

Waist circumference and BMI are independently associated with the variation of cardio-respiratory and neuromuscular fitness in young adult men.

2006

To test two hypotheses: (1) cardiorespiratory (CRF) and neuromuscular (NMF) fitness is associated with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), independent of each other and of leisure-time physical activity; (2) individuals with high CRF and NMF have lower WC for a given BMI, compared with those with low CRF and NMF. Cross-sectional study. Men participating in refresher training organized by the Finnish Defence Forces. A total of 951 men (mean age 29.1, s.d. 4.2 years; BMI 25.3 kg/m2, s.d. 3.8; WC 91, s.d. 11 cm). Body mass index, WC, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), height of vertical jump, number of push-ups and sit-ups during a 1-min test, static back extension endurance, isom…

Effect of intravenous application of esomeprazole 40???mg versus pantoprazole 40???mg on 24-hour intragastric pH in healthy adults

2007

BACKGROUND: It has been demonstrated that therapy with proton pump inhibitors reduces recurrence of bleeding following initial endoscopic treatment of bleeding peptic ulcers. AIM: This study compared the effects of esomeprazole 40 mg and pantoprazole 40 mg on intragastric acid control. Both substances were administered intravenously as 15-min infusion and as bolus injection. METHODS: Healthy men and women volunteers were enrolled in this single-center, open, randomized, three-way crossover study. After administration of esomeprazole 40 mg and pantoprazole 40 mg intravenously as 15-min infusion, and pantoprazole 40 mg intravenously as bolus injection, continuous 24-h intragastric pH monitori…

Early detection of Toxoplasma infection by molecular monitoring of Toxoplasma gondii in peripheral blood samples after allogeneic stem cell transplan…

2004

International audience; Background. Isolated case reports have shown that recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplants ( HSCTs) who develop toxoplasmosis may have circulating Toxoplasma gondii DNA in peripheral blood before the onset of clinical symptoms. Methods. We prospectively studied 106 T. gondii - seropositive adult recipients of HSCTs for the incidence of reactivation of toxoplasmosis in the first 6 months after transplantation. Toxoplasmosis infection ( TI) was defined by a positive result of polymerase chain reaction ( PCR) of peripheral blood specimens, whereas toxoplasmosis disease ( TD) was defined as an invasive infection. Results. The incidence of TI was 16% (…

Reliability and variability of bioimpedance measures in normal adults: Effects of age, gender, and body mass

2003

This study aimed to analyze the reliability and evaluate the causes of variability of bioimpedance parameters. Direct measures were analyzed because they are not affected by inappropriate prediction models. Resistance (R), reactance (Xc), and phase angle (PA) were determined at three fixed frequencies (5, 50, and 100 kHz) in 653 normal Germans (244 males and 409 females), aged 20-90 years, using a phase-sensitive whole-body tetrapolar bioimpedance analyzer (BIA 2000-M, Data Input, Germany). From these values, six bioimpedance ratios were calculated (R(5)/R(50), R(5)/R(100), Xc(5)/Xc(50), Xc(5)/Xc(100), PA(5)/PA(50), and PA(5)/PA(100)). Reliability of duplicate measurements, as determined by…

Coagulation, fibrinolysis and haemorheology in premenopausal obese women with different body fat distribution

1994

Recently waist/hip ratio (WHR), a marker of body fat distribution, has been described as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of body fat distribution on metabolic, haemostatic and haemorheological pattern in premenopausal obese women with different WHR. Fourty premenopausal obese women were subdivided into two groups, matched for age and body mass index (BMI): 20 women with abdominal obesity (WHR = 0.94 +/- 0.02) and 20 women with peripheral obesity (WHR = 0.77 +/- 0.03). Twenty nonobese women were recruited as control group. The abdominal obesity group had significantly higher blood glucose, triglycerides, total cholest…

Emerico Amari's political commitment mirrored in his parliamentary activity

2016

Emerico Amari (Palermo 1810-1870) can rightly be considered a protagonist of the culture and of the political events of the Italian Risorgimento, although only in the past few decades has he attracted the attention of the historians involved in recovering and studying his numerous inedited papers and in going more deeply into his political and economic thought and his interest in the Constitution and in the institutions. His scientific production noteworthy for the number of works and for the profundity of the contents, the value which is still partly to be brought to light, ranges from moral philosophy to epistemology, from economics to criminal law. But at the same time, the Palermitan sc…

Changes in Body Composition in Anorexia Nervosa : Predictors of Recovery and Treatment Outcome

2015

The restoration of body composition (BC) parameters is considered to be one of the most important goals in the treatment of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). However, little is known about differences between AN diagnostic subtypes [restricting (AN-R) and binge/purging (AN-BP)] and weekly changes in BC during refeeding treatment. Therefore, the main objectives of our study were twofold: 1) to assess the changes in BC throughout nutritional treatment in an AN sample and 2) to analyze predictors of BC changes during treatment, as well as predictors of treatment outcome. The whole sample comprised 261 participants [118 adult females with AN (70 AN-R vs. 48 AN-BP), and 143 healthy controls].…
