Bioengineering Materials for Environment Protection in a Changing Climate
2019
Climate change is one of the biggest problems of our times and passing the time climate extremes tend to increase both in magnitude and in frequency. Because the severity of the extreme climate events has increased, the interaction of these events with vulnerable human and natural systems has more frequently lead to disasters. Recent climate models projections have also shown a further substantial warming in temperature extremes by the end of the 21st century. The prevision models’ results also indicate that the global warming and the increase in frequency of temperature extremes could be strictly related to the anthropogenic forcing. The present special issue collects contributions represe…
Retrofit of External Beam-Column Concrete Joints with Diagonally Crossed Reinforcement: Experimental and Analytical Investigations
2022
AbstractExperimental research was carried out regarding the flexural behavior under cyclic reversal loading of six full-scale external beam-column concrete joints cast with plain concrete in the pr...
Geometry, electronic structure, morphology, and photoluminescence emissions of BaW1-xMoxO4 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1) solid solutions: Theory a…
2019
Abstract The design of a solid solution with tunable electro-optical properties and multifunctionality is a promising strategy for developing novel materials. In this work, BaW1-xMoxO4 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1) solid solutions have been successfully prepared for the first time by a co-precipitation method. Their crystal structure and phase composition were determined by X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinements. Fourier transform infrared and micro Raman spectroscopy in combination with field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were used to describe the microstructures and chemical compositions of the synthesized materials. The influence of chemical composition on morpholo…
Moment-axial force domain of corroded R.C. columns
2016
In the present paper, a simple model to determine the moment-axial force domain of the cross-section of reinforced concrete (R.C.) columns subjected to corrosion process is presented. The model considers members with square and rectangular cross-sections and it accounts for—cover spalling; buckling of longitudinal reinforcing bars; loss of bond of bar in tension; reduction of confinement pressures (due to the reduction of the area of stirrups and cracking of concrete induced by rust formation). The analytical expressions for prediction of the area reduction of steel, bond strength and critical load of longitudinal bars utilized were verified against experimental data available in the litera…
Linear viscoelastic properties of high reclaimed asphalt content mixes with biobinders
2017
The use of high Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) content mixtures together with binders produced from renewable resources (biobinders) is one of the current challenges in pavement engineering research. On the one hand, RA has been used for decades, but there are still some concerns about its performance, especially when high contents are used (>30%). On the other hand, biobinders are relatively new materials, which have to be deeply characterised and studied in order to develop good practices for their use. In this paper, linear viscoelastic properties of biobinders and bio-mixtures manufactured with high RA content and biobinders are analysed and discussed. High-modulus mixtures with 50% RA were…
Flexural behaviour of glulam timber beams reinforced with FRP cords
2015
Abstract Glued laminated timber (glulam) is widely used as a construction material to make up lightweight and large span structures. The basic principle of this material consists in bonding together a number of layers of dimensioned timber with structural adhesives, in order to increase strength and stiffness of the member, and allowing to make up sustainable structures with great visual impact. Recent applications showed the effectiveness of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in enhancing the structural performances of glulam beams, with particular reference on their flexural and shear strength. In fact FRP reinforcements could be used to strengthen existing structures or to reduce …
Influence of axial force and corrosion on failure of prestressed concrete structures considering M-V interaction
2021
Abstract Existing prestressed concrete structures suffer from degradation of prestressing for two main reasons: a defect of the sheath infills (cement grout) of bonded tendons, and corrosion of steel strands. These two causes, often concomitant, lead to a reduction over time of the effectiveness of initial prestressing, in addition to the ordinary tension losses due to concrete shrinkage and creep, and to steel relaxation. In many cases a consequence of bad grouting in bonded tendons is that the structure shows an intermediate behavior between that of external prestressing and that of internal bonded prestressing. This, added to damage to wires due to corrosion, makes it essential for the d…
Density functional study of gold atoms and clusters on a graphite (0001) surface with defects
2006
Adsorption of gold atoms and clusters $(N=6)$ on a graphite (0001) surface with defects has been studied using density functional theory. In addition to perfect graphite (0001), three types of surface defects have been considered: a surface vacancy (hole), a pyridinelike defect comprising three grouped nitrogen atoms, and a substitutional doping by N or B. Results for Au and ${\mathrm{Au}}_{6}$ indicate that the surface vacancy can form chemical bonds with Au as the three nearby carbons align their dangling bonds towards the gold particle (binding energy 2.4--$2.6\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$). A similar chemically saturated holelike construction with three pyridinic N atoms resul…
Mix design and mechanical performance of geopolymeric binders and mortars using biomass fly ash and alkaline effluent from paper-pulp industry
2019
Abstract This work investigates the use of biomass fly ash (BFA) and an alkaline effluent (AEF), both generated from the Kraft pulp industry, in the preparation of geopolymeric binders and mortars for construction applications. BFA replaced the metakaolin (MK) while the AEF substituted the distilled water used to dissolve NaOH pellets. The mix design aims to maximize the amount of both the wastes and to optimize the materials properties, such as workability and mechanical performance. At the same time, also the environmental impact decreases enhancing the materials' sustainability and facilitating the circular economy. For the previously optimized BFA/MK ratio (70/30 wt.%) several NaOH/Na2S…
The effect of polycations on early cement paste
2010
International audience; This paper studies the possibility for improving the ductility of cement based materials by means of oligocationic additives. Actually, the setting of cement is due to ionic correlation forces between highly negatively charged C-S-H nanoparticles throughout a calcium rich solution. The main drawback of this strong attraction is its very short range that results in low elastic deformation of hydrated cementitious materials. A way to enlarge the attraction range between C-S-H particles would be to add cationic oligomers that would compete with calcium ions modifying the ionic correlation forces via a bridging mechanism of longer range, which could lead to a more ductil…
