'Climbing Untrodden Paths and Unfrequented Passes'. De-Generation in 'The Buddhist Priest's Wife' by Schreiner, 'A Cross Line' by Egerton and 'The Un…
2013
This essay aims to show how different forms of de-generation in the social construction of fin de siècle female identity prove to be intentional instruments to defy conventional 19th century femininity and generate and circulate new female discoursivities in order to integrate forms of transgression into socially accepted behaviours. As critics have long argued the New Woman -the modern woman emerging from the disruption of the Angel in the House stereotype- has to be treated as a discursive process and a multilayered subject. The analysis of Schreiner’s “The Buddhist Priest’s Wife” (1891), Egerton’s “A Cross Line” (1893), and Grand’s “The Undefinable: A Fantasia” (1894), will highlight the…
Nipple-sparing mastectomy and breast reconstruction with a deep inferior epigastric perforator flap using thoracodorsal recipient vessels and a low l…
2018
Background Nipple-sparing mastectomy poses challenges in providing esthetically-pleasing immediate autologous breast reconstruction. This study was to investigate the outcomes of nipple-sparing mastectomy with breast reconstruction using free abdominal flaps between two different recipient sites. Methods Between 2010 and 2016, 79 patients who underwent nipple-sparing mastectomy with autologous breast reconstruction using thoracodorsal (TD) vessels in 30 cases or internal mammary (IM) vessels in 49 cases were investigated. Demographics, intraoperative findings, complications, and quality of life using Breast-Q questionnaire were compared between two groups. Results All flap survived. There w…

Moisture absorption, thermal conductivity and noise mitigation of clay based plasters: The influence of mineralogical and textural characteristics
2016
Abstract Three pre-mixed clay based plasters successfully employed in green building practices in several European countries (Spain, France, Germany, and United Kingdom), mainly used for interior wall coating and finishing, were tested in this paper. Their compositional and textural characteristics as well as plastic behaviour were investigated through a multi-analytical approach in a previous paper. A natural earth (Terra Rossa red soil sampled in north-western Sicily), theoretically appropriate for the production of earthen plaster, was also subjected to the same analytical routine and compared with the three commercially available products. Humidity control capacity by the determination …
Quantification of melanin and hemoglobin in humain skin from multispectral image acquisition: use of a neuronal network combined to a non-negative ma…
2012
International audience; This article presents a multispectral imaging system which, coupled with a neural network-based algorithm, reconstructs reflectance cubes. The reflectance spectra are obtained using artificial neural-netwok reconstruction which generates reflectance cubes from acquired multispectral images. Then, a blind source separation algorithm based on Non-negative Matrix Factorization is used for the decomposition of human skin absorption spectra in its main pigments: melanin and hemoglobin. The analysis is performed on reflectance spectra. The implemented source separation algorithm is based on a multiplicative coefficient upload. The goal is to represent a given spectrum as t…
Taxas de substituições das Annonaceas: uma perspectiva do modelo códon
2014
The Annonaceae includes cultivated species of economic interest and represents an important source of information for better understanding the evolution of tropical rainforests. In phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data that are used to address evolutionary questions, it is imperative to use appropriate statistical models. Annonaceae are cases in point: Two sister clades, the subfamilies Annonoideae and Malmeoideae, contain the majority of Annonaceae species diversity. The Annonoideae generally show a greater degree of sequence divergence compared to the Malmeoideae, resulting in stark differences in branch lengths in phylogenetic trees. Uncertainty in how to interpret and analyse these…
Meaning Extraction from Strappare Causatives in Italian
2021
The work targets a little-known causative construction of Italian whose causative verb is strappare ‘tear/extort/snatch’ (e.g. Ada strappò la confessione a Piero ‘Ada made Piero confess against his will’). In the active voice of this clause type, the subject, licensed by strappare, is invariably associated with the semantic role ‘Causer’ (as fare does in fare causatives, see [1]), whilst the post-verbal NP (e.g. confessione ‘confession’) is best analyzed as the predicate licensing the remaining syntactic function/s and the related semantic role/s. The NooJ grammar which the authors propose automatically extracts the meaning of strappare causatives by means of a novel type of semantic role. …
Revising midlatitude summer temperatures back to A.D. 600 based on a wood density network
2015
Annually resolved and millennium-long reconstructions of large-scale temperature variability are primarily composed of tree ring width (TRW) chronologies. Changes in ring width, however, have recently been shown to bias the ratio between low- and high-frequency signals. To overcome limitations in capturing the full spectrum of past temperature variability, we present a network of 15 maximum latewood density (MXD) chronologies distributed across the Northern Hemisphere extratropics. Independent subsets of continental-scale records consistently reveal high MXD before 1580 and after 1910, with below average values between these periods. Reconstructed extratropical summer temperatures reflect n…
Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems
2014
The Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) in 2015 returned to its hometown, Dubrovnik, and once again served as a significant venue for scientists and specialists in different areas of sustainable development from all over the world to initiate, discuss, share, and disseminate new ideas. At the 10th SDEWES Conference, about 500 participants from 64 countries delivered total 541 contributions - 5 invited lectures, 3 panels, 49 regular sessions, 17 special sessions and 5 poster sessions, aimed at deepening the knowledge body and scientific understanding, improvement of long-term scientific assessments, strengthening of scientific capacities aro…
