Capturing gypsum rillenkarren morphometry by a 3D-photo reconstruction (3D-PR) technique
2020
Abstract Rillenkarren are small scale, straight, narrow solution channels that head at the crest of a bare rock slope and are extinguished downslope. In this paper the applicability of 3D-photo reconstruction technique of the rock surface is proposed for capturing the rillenkarren morphometry on gypsum. At first, the measurements are used to assess a relationship between the width/depth ratio and the depth of the rillenkarren. The exponent of this power relationship resulted different from the theoretical value - 0.5, confirming that the cross-section profiles of a rillenkarren can have a shape different from parabolic. The analysis developed for the cross-section area, the perimeter and th…
What does insurance purchase behaviour say about risks?
2015
Purpose – This paper aims to explore the world of insurances as rites of adaptancy and resiliency before risk and disasters. The research on risks, both perceived and real, has become a frequent theme of academic research in the recent past. Design/methodology/approach – The information given by the superintendencia de Seguros de Buenos Aires involves 100 per cent of the insurances companies of Argentina. The reading of insurance demands corresponds with a new method in the studies of risks. Findings – Using advanced probability theory and quantitative techniques, risk management researchers have been able to construct sophisticated mathematical-statistical models of risk. Research limitat…
Experimental determination of viscous damper parameters in low velocity ranges
2017
In the last decades many strategies for seismic vulnerability mitigation of structures have been developed through analytical studies and experimental tests. Among these, energy dissipation by external devices assumes a great relevance for the relative design simplicity, even if applied to complex structures, and the effectiveness in reducing seismic demand. In particular, the use of fluid viscous dampers represents a very attractive solution because of their velocity-dependent behaviour and relatively low costs. The application on structures requires specific study under seismic excitation and a particular care of structural details. In this context the use of proper constitutive models fo…
A macro-modelling approach for the analysis of infilled frame structures considering the effects of openings and vertical loads
2015
During the last decades, several macro-models have been proposed for the modelling of the infill panels' contribution to the lateral strength of frames. Despite all this effort, a robust model, which takes into account the influence of the vertical load, is not yet available. Furthermore, the influence of the very common case of infill walls with openings, such as windows and doors, has been neglected in all the code provisions that have been published so far. In this paper, an updated macro-model, based on the equivalent pin-jointed diagonal compressive strut, is presented. The proposed macro-model is able to represent the stiffening effect of the infill panel with openings by taking into …
Stress-strain models for normal and high strength confined concrete: Test and comparison of literature models reliability in reproducing experimental…
2017
SUMMARY: The adoption of proper constitutive laws for confined concrete is basic for seismic assessment of new and existing reinforced concrete civil structures. The deformation capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to axially centred and eccentric loads depends on the effectiveness confinement action. A proper assignment of the stressstrainlaws for concrete allows obtaining an adequate definition of the ductility of the crosssections and correctly identifying mechanical nonlinearities in computational models.Several studies concerning the behaviour of confined concrete have been carried out, highlighting the role of different geometrical and mechanical parameters to the ov…
Computer vision-based approach for rite decryption in old societies
2015
International audience; This paper presents an approach to determine the spatial arrangement of bones of horses in an excavation site and perform the 3D reconstruction of the scene. The relative 3D positioning of the bones was computed exploiting the information in images acquired at different levels, and used to relocate provided 3D models of the bones. A novel semi-supervised approach was proposed to generate dense point clouds of the bones from sparse features. The point clouds were later matched with the given models using Iterative Closest Point (ICP).
Introducing a new method for efficient visualization of complex shape 3D ultrasonic phased-array C-scans
2017
Automated robotic inspection systems allow the collection of large data volumes, compared to existing inspection systems. To maximize the throughput associated with the non-destructive evaluation phase, it is crucial that the reconstructed inspection data sets are generated and examined rapidly without a loss of detail. Data analysis often becomes the bottleneck of automated inspections. Therefore, new data visualization tools, suitable to screen the NDT information obtained through robotic systems, are urgently required. This paper presents a new approach, for the generation of three-dimensional ultrasonic C-scans of large and complex parts, suitable for application to high data throughput…
Algorithmic Complexity Vulnerability Analysis of a Stateful Firewall
2016
Algorithmic complexity vulnerabilities are an opportunity for an ad-versary to conduct a sophisticated kind of attack i.e. on network infrastructure services. Such attacks take advantage of worst case time or space complexity of algorithms implemented on devices in their software. In this paper we address potential risks introduced by such algorithmic behavior in computer networks in particular on a stateful firewall. First we introduce the idea and theoretical background for the attack. We then describe in full detail a successfully con-ducted attack which takes advantage of the worst case computational complexi-ty of O(n2) of a hash table data structure used to store active sessions. The …
Dal rilievo alla ricostruzione del progetto: la torre Pisana nel Palazzo Reale di Palermo
2017
The paper focuses the survey and representation of the Pisana Tower in the Royal Palace of Palermo. The tower, which has recently been inserted in the UNESCO World Heritage List, was built in the XII century under the patronage of Norman kings. Along the centuries, the tower has undergone several transformations, to fit ever-changing uses. The coexistence of such heterogeneous elements, combined with the fragmentation of the passages connecting the levels of the tower, conceal the original unity and the typology of this historical building. Researches focusing the study of monuments deeply transformed along their history, even when based on the cooperation of multidisciplinary scholarships,…
