Ventilative cooling application in Mediterranean buildings: impacts on grid interaction and load match

2016

The concept of load matching refers to the simultaneous occurrence of loads and generation in buildings: it can be increased and optimised with modifications on both the energy demand and generation, but its pre-requisite is to guarantee passive energy efficiency. In the Mediterranean areas, a major challenge in new buildings is the increasing overheating even during mildly hot seasons. Ventilative cooling can be a potential solution to such issues and have an impact on load match in buildings and their grid interaction. The study analyses the potential of ventilative cooling to improve the load match in three different case studies in Italy. Ventilative cooling proved viable in moderately …

Wooden, gypsum and cork floor in the Sicilian construction tradition

2014

This presentation deals with a part of a wider and more complex outline of the Sicilian construction tradition characterised by the presence of gypsum technologies. Gypsum is a very common material used in the island for the realisation of all building elements; its use is commonly spread throughout Sicily thanks to several and wide superficial out crops located in some parts of the island that make this material very easy to find. This presentation is particularly focused on wooden and gypsum floors found and analysed during searches and surveys in the regional area. Outline on criteria for some consistent and appropriate consolidation and restoration interventions are here proposed.

Designing knowledge construction in pre-service teachers’ collaborative planning talk

2022

In this paper, we report on a qualitative study of student teachers’ collaboration in planning and implementing a course that integrated physics and the Finnish language. Audio-recorded planning sessions and interviews were examined using qualitative content analysis, first, to discover what kind of space for knowledge construction student teachers designed for learners and, second, to identify the characteristics of their collaboration in developing a new cross-disciplinary pedagogical practice. The analysis revealed challenges in integrating meaning-making resources for knowledge construction; especially the role of language remained mostly invisible. This indicates a need to develop teac…

Can Dried Fruits Replace Unhealthy Snacking among Millennials? An Empirical Study on Dried Fruit Consumption in Italy

2023

The consumption of dried fruits in place of unhealthy snacks, which are rich in sugars, salt, and fats, could represent a valid option for reaching the daily intake recommended by the WHO for fruits and for encouraging the adoption of a sustainable diet. However, the consumption of dried fruits is lower than that of unhealthy snacks, especially among young people. Therefore, to foster young people’s intentions to consume dried fruits instead of unhealthy snacks, it is important to identify the factors underlying millennials’ consumption intentions. Using a convenience sample of 174 Italian millennials, this paper aimed to understand the factors influencing young people’s i…

Konstrukcja prawna planowania przestrzennego w Polsce w latach 1945–1989

2021

The main objective of this paper is to present the legal construction of the spatial planning in Poland between 1945 and 1989, as well as its evaluation from the perspective of the development of spatial planning and management legislation. The thesis put forward in the paper is that between 1945 and 1989, i.e. in the years when the principle of self-governance was not supported by state institutions, spatial planning was detached from the needs of local communities. Analyzing the legal construction of the spatial planning in Poland between 1945 and 1989 showed a certain regularity, namely that the spatial order construction was difficult at that time due to the then socio-economic conditio…

La committenza dei Barresi nel castello di Pietraperzia: la trasformazione della fabbrica in palazzo residenziale nel primo Cinquecento

2009

The essay reconstructs the history of the castle of Pietraperzia -now reduced to a state of ruin - between the second half of fifteenth and the first half of the sixteenth centuries. Over that period it was tranformed from a medieval fortress to a luxurious residence, home to a cultured and sophisticated court. Supported by new archival documents, the author highlights the role of the aristocratic patrons, the Barresi of Pietraperzia and, in particular, that of two key figures, Giovanni Antonio II and his son, Matteo. Simultaneously the author offers a hypotetical reconstruction of the 16 century appearance and configuration of the building. This was the most significant and lasting epoch i…

Domestic dexterity and cultural policy : the idea of cottage industry and historical experience in Finland from the great famine to the reconstructio…

2016

The concept of cottage industry (kotiteollisuus) referred especially to rural craft practices. For the promotion of cottage industries, a state administrative organ and a network of cottage industry associations and schools were established. A sphere developed and monitored by specialists, cottage industry policies were planned as official committee work. However, the matter was usually addressed as ‘the idea of cottage industry’ (kotiteollisuusaate). In this study, the historical idea of cottage industry and its cultural and political backgrounds are analysed. The starting point of the investigation is in the post-WWII Cottage Industry Production Committee, but from its years of activity, …

Prometeo genetista? Per il superamento dell'opposizione natura/cultura, una prospettiva antropopoietica ed ecopoietica

2019

During the XVIIth Century, particularly with Descartes, appeared the modern concept of nature: a nature as object submitted to the reason of man. Contrary to what is generally assumed, this « nature » as domain to be worked out by man does not depend on the Greek concept of phusis. It is not to be opposed either to the modern concept of « culture ». On the contrary the Greek phusis as dynamical process invites us to think the relationship between nature and culture, or rather between the environment and the communities of men which live in it and through it in terms of a necessary interaction. The Greek phusis leads to a critique of the modern, neoliberal paradigm of natural ressources to b…
