Ductility of Reinforced Concrete Members Externally Wrapped with Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Sheets

The effectiveness of external wrapping with fiber-reinforced polymer for enhancing the curvature ductility of lightly reinforced concrete members is investigated. Referring to members with circular transverse cross sections, the performances in terms of both strength and ductility capacities are analyzed, and the predictive reliability of two different recent constitutive models, available in the literature and able to take into account the softening behavior of confined concrete, is checked. Authenticity in Extra-curricular Mathematics Activities: Researching Authenticity as a Social Construct

In this chapter I study authentic aspects in mathematics education, in particular with respect to mathematical modelling. I define ‘authenticity’ as a social construct, building on the French sociologist Emile Durkheim. For an aspect to be authentic, it needs to have: (1) an out-of-school origin and (2) a certification of originality. Seront aussi évoqués les effets de cette dynamique sur les modalités d'élaboration d'une politique d'intervention régionale et de construction de l'offre de formation.

Climate Change: An Educational Proposal Integrating the Physical and Social Sciences

Abstract The scientific community has been debating climate change for at least twenty years. The EU has recommended a set of innovative reforms to science teaching, incorporating environmental issues in the scientific curriculum, answering the need for making school a place of civic education. This paper focuses on the presentation of materials designed to foster both deep understanding of the basic concepts involved in climate change as well as critical thinking for addressing some cognitive and emotional barriers that have been proved to hinder individual behavioural reactions.

Il lavoro si pone come obiettivo la ricostruzione congetturale del progetto dell’Eden Teatro Biondo (1912) a Palermo di Ernesto Basile (Palermo 1857–1932) a partire dai disegni originari. L’edifico propone una tipologia che fonde cinematografo (al piano terra) e teatro (al piano superiore). Pensato su un fronte di Piazza Verdi, non sarà realizzato per i costi ritenuti troppo elevati dai committenti. Le scansioni dei disegni originari (conservati presso il Fondo Basile del Dipartimento di Architettura dell’Università di Palermo) hanno consentito la vettorializzazione piana utilizzata per l’analisi e per la modellazione 3D. B a c k g ro u n d. Reconstruction of the posterior auricular surface and of the mastoid has never been given much attention and there are no techniques described. The authors describe two techniques for reconstruction of these areas after cancer excision with local flaps. Striving at partnership: parent–practitioner relationships in Finnish early educators' talk

ABSTRACT In Finnish early childhood education and care, partnership has been introduced as a general approach in the parent–practitioner collaboration. Based on qualitative interviews with practitioners, the article studies, from a social constructionist and discourse analytic perspective, whether partnership is actualised in parent–practitioner relationship and how it is done. The results show that the ideas about parent–practitioner collaboration are not coherent. The article examines the question of the agentic force of documents in institutional practices and proposes a conceptual model of the agentic relation between documentation and human actors. For this aim, it presents an empirical case study of Finnish early childhood education and care. The study deals with individual education plans (IEPs), which are an example of child documentation that aims at an individualised and participatory pedagogy.
