Adult Education in Art Galleries
2016
Since I began researching adult education in art galleries 20 years ago in Europe, I have noticed two conflicting trends. Contemporary art has become more extraverted and socially engaged, whilst lifelong learning, the discourse of neoliberalism that informs most policy, has become increasingly focused on providing learners with predefined competencies and pushed for ‘measurable’ results (e.g. Pedersen, 2014; Illeris, 2015).
Transformative Learning, Bildung and Biographical Research
2017
The objective of this chapter, as the title states, is to relate transformative learning and Bildung within the context of biographical research. If processes of Bildung are defined as changes of attitude towards the world and the self, which is a consensus of Bildungs-oriented biographical research in Germany, and if one agrees furthermore that transformative learning and Bildung go together with fundamental changes of the self or the identity, it is rather surprising to note that both discourses have hardly ever been related.
Music in the moment? Revisiting the effect of large scale structures.
2007
The psychological relevance of large-scale musical structures has been a matter of debate in the music community. This issue was investigated with a method that allows assessing listeners' detection of musical incoherencies in normal and scrambled versions of popular and contemporary music pieces. Musical excerpts were segmented into 28 or 29 chunks. In the scrambled version, the temporal order of these chunks was altered with the constraint that the transitions between two chunks never created local acoustical and musical disruptions. Participants were required (1) to detect on-line incoherent linking of chunks, (2) to rate aesthetic quality of pieces, and (3) to evaluate their overall co…
Dance on cortex: enhanced theta synchrony in experts when watching a dance piece
2018
When watching performing arts, a wide and complex network of brain processes emerge. These processes can be shaped by professional expertise. When compared to laymen, dancers have enhanced processes in observation of short dance movement and listening to music. But how do the cortical processes differ in musicians and dancers when watching an audio-visual dance performance? In our study, we presented the participants long excerpts from the contemporary dance choreography of Carmen. During multimodal movement of a dancer, theta phase synchrony over the fronto-central electrodes was stronger in dancers when compared to musicians and laymen. In addition, alpha synchrony was decreased in all gr…
Towards an Aesthetic of „Straniety” in Postmodern and Contemporary Dance
2021
Abstract The complicated physiognomy of dance in the XX-th and XXI-th century obviously exeedes the stable marks of „beauty” as an aesthetic category, by extending the limits of imaginary and techniques of artistic productions beyond any restraints. Both form and artistic expressions become suitable for specific interpretations, through the instruments and postmodern categories. The argumentation frequently refer to three moments of avantgardes, swiftly mentioning the reform’s beginings on the european artistic environment as a starting point, and underlying the Black Montain College phenomenon, and its consequences through the 80-ties and after. The fluctuations of artistic objectives are …
Prefazione al romanzo di Jumoke Verissimo, Memoria e desiderio
2021
A well established and renowned poet residing in Canada, Jumoke Verissimo debuted with her first novel, A Small Silence, in 2019. The Preface to the Italian edition elucidates how in Verissimo's fictional account of a dissident intellectual released from prison after the end of Abacha's dictatorship, and in his friendship with a young woman studying at the local University, we find a portrait of today's Nigeria trying to survive its post-independence, post-colonial, post-dictatorship era.

Paesaggio Scotellaro. Materiali per "Cantilena" (e per la prima Rosselli)
2023
The article starts from the intellectual friendship between Rocco Scotellaro and Amelia Rosselli, then proceeds to focus on the early poems by Rosselli (specifically Cantilena. Poesie per Rocco Scotellaro). Rosselli's short poetic text, her Italian debut in 1953, displays the mourning for Scotellaro's early death and portrays a contradictory absence/presence of her friend into the landscape of Basilicata. In our contribution a theme-based analysis is offered. Through close reading, we investigate on Rosselli's sources (Campana, Jung), both identifying cross-references to Scotellaro's poems and proses and reading Cantilena in continuity with her poetic texts up to Diario ottuso.

Design at the root of biophilia. Imitation. Nature
2021
According to the current state of research on the phenomenon of biophilia, the positive influence of nature's elements on humans has long been widely understood. Since the negative impact of urbanised areas on quality of life was noticed, human-friendly architecture has been redefined, where the physical and mental well-being of people using buildings, remains highly dependent on their contact with the environment. Selected examples of existing buildings analyzed two different approaches to contemporary biophilic architecture; one where nature is the pedestal of the whole building and one where the interpretation of nature translates into technological, engineering or structural solutions. …
