Hot-electron noise suppression in n-Si via the Hall effect

We investigate how hot-electron fluctuations in n-type Si are affected by the presence of an intense (static) magnetic field in a Hall geometry. By using the Monte Carlo method, we find that the known Hall-effect-induced redistribution of electrons among valleys can suppress electron fluctuations with a simultaneous enhancement of the drift velocity. Relaxation of Electron Spin during High-Field Transport in GaAs Bulk

A semiclassical Monte Carlo approach is adopted to study the multivalley spin depolarization of drifting electrons in a doped n-type GaAs bulk semiconductor, in a wide range of lattice temperature ($40<T_L<300$ K) and doping density ($10^{13}<n<10^{16}$cm$^{-3}$). The decay of the initial non-equilibrium spin polarization of the conduction electrons is investigated as a function of the amplitude of the driving static electric field, ranging between 0.1 and 6 kV/cm, by considering the spin dynamics of electrons in both the $\Gamma$ and the upper valleys of the semiconductor. Hydrokinetic simulations of nanoscopic precursor films in rough channels

We report on simulations of capillary filling of high-wetting fluids in nano-channels with and without obstacles. We use atomistic (molecular dynamics) and hydrokinetic (lattice-Boltzmann) approaches which point out clear evidence of the formation of thin precursor films, moving ahead of the main capillary front. The dynamics of the precursor films is found to obey a square-root law as the main capillary front, z^2(t) ~ t, although with a larger prefactor, which we find to take the same value for the different geometries (2D-3D) under inspection. Modeling interactions between political parties and electors

In this paper we extend some recent results on an operatorial approach to the description of alliances between political parties interacting among themselves and with a basin of electors. In particular, we propose and compare three different models, deducing the dynamics of their related {\em decision functions}, i.e. the attitude of each party to form or not an alliance. In the first model the interactions between each party and their electors are considered. We show that these interactions drive the decision functions towards certain asymptotic values depending on the electors only: this is the {\em perfect party}, which behaves following the electors' suggestions. First results on applying a non-linear effect formalism to alliances between political parties and buy and sell dynamics

We discuss a non linear extension of a model of alliances in politics, recently proposed by one of us. The model is constructed in terms of operators, describing the \emph{interest} of three parties to form, or not, some political alliance with the other parties. The time evolution of what we call \emph{the decision functions} is deduced by introducing a suitable hamiltonian, which describes the main effects of the interactions of the parties amongst themselves and with their \emph{environments}, {which are }generated by their electors and by people who still have no clear {idea }for which party to vote (or even if to vote). Spin-Based Quantum Information Processing in Magnetic Quantum Dots

We define the qubit as a pair of singlet and triplet states of two electrons in a He-type quantum dot (QD) placed in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) medium. The molecular field is here essential as it removes the degeneracy of the triplet state and strongly enhances the Zeeman splitting. Methods of qubit rotation as well as two-qubit operations are suggested. The system of a QD in a DMS is described in a way which allows an analysis of the decoherence due to spin waves in the DMS subsystem.

Microscopic theory for hopping transport in glass-forming liquids: mode coupling corrections

Abstract By introducing an order parameter that describes the geometry of clusters of particles, Liu and Oppenheim [Physica A 247 (1997) 183] developed a microscopic theory for hopping transport in glass-forming liquids. In this work we bring this theory within the frame of mode coupling theories in the highly viscous regime. We calculate corrections to the effective longitudinal viscosity that affect its long-time dynamical behavior. Nevertheless, the relation between the longitudinal viscosity and the hopping kernel is not qualitatively altered by mode coupling.

Fluorescence quenching by trapped charge carriers in N,N-dimethylaminobenzylidene 1,3-indandione films

Effects caused by the applied voltage on the steady state and time-resolved fluorescence of vacuum evaporated N,N-dimethylaminobenzylidene 1,3-indandione films sandwiched between gold and aluminium electrodes were investigated and discussed. Fluorescence enhancement and quenching as well as the fluorescence band narrowing depending on the applied voltage have been observed. Fluorescence decay and recovery take place on a time scale of tens of seconds after voltage is switched on and off. Similar fluorescence decay also takes place after switching on the excitation light. These fluorescence changes are attributed to the exciton quenching by trapped charge carriers.

The Gaia-ESO survey: Discovery of a spatially extended low-mass population in the Vela OB2 association

The nearby (distance~350-400 pc), rich Vela OB2 association, includes $\gamma^2$ Velorum, one of the most massive binaries in the solar neighbourhood and an excellent laboratory for investigating the formation and early evolution of young clusters. Recent Gaia-ESO survey observations have led to the discovery of two kinematically distinct populations in the young (10-15 Myr) cluster immediately surrounding $\gamma^2$ Velorum. Here we analyse the results of Gaia-ESO survey observations of NGC 2547, a 35 Myr cluster located two degrees south of $\gamma^2$ Velorum.
