How and when do mobile media demands impact well-being? Explicating the integrative model of mobile media use and need experiences (IM3UNE)

2021

Using mobile media can be both detrimental and beneficial for well-being. Thus, explaining how and when they elicit such effects is of crucial importance. To explicate boundary conditions and processes for digital well-being, this article introduces the Integrative Model of Mobile Media Use and Need Experiences (IM³UNE). Instead of assuming mobile media to be pathogenic, the IM³UNE offers a salutogenic perspective—it focuses on how we can stay healthy when using mobile media ubiquitously in daily life. More specifically, the model assumes that both the satisfaction and the frustration of basic psychological needs are key underlying mechanisms linking demanding mobile media use to well-being…

“Art as a Way to Life”: Bereavement and the Healing Power of Arts and Writing

2003

Reading, writing, music, and fine arts are widely acknowledged to have therapeutic value to those bereaved. Narratives of coping with the help of arts are commonly told. Yet, the experiences of bereavement and the healing powers of arts and writing are rarely discussed and analyzed in social sciences. In this article, I search for a way to study the therapeutic power of arts and writing on a personal level. Using empathy as a metaphorical tool, I read an unpublished autobiography about a mother's grief and coping process through my own experiences of bereavement. I strive for emotional verisimilitude and apply a poetic form when citing the autobiography to highlight the evocative tone of t…

Identifying Coping Profiles and Profile Differences in Role Engagement and Subjective Well-Being

2014

Coping strategies are not necessarily mutually exclusive and can be used simultaneously, a fact which has rarely been examined in coping research. We examined what kinds of coping profiles could be found in data concerning Finnish health care and service employees (n = 2756). We also studied whether role engagement (family-to-work-enrichment, work-to-family-enrichment, emotional energy at work, and work engagement) and subjective well-being (life, parental, and marital satisfaction, and psychological distress) differ between coping profiles. The data were analyzed through latent profile (LPA) and covariance analyses (Ancovas). LPA revealed seven distinct coping profiles: two active groups,…

FORMER PUPILS’ EXPERIENCED MENTAL HEALTH (MH) AND QUALITY OF LIFE (QOL) SOME YEARS AFTER COMPLETION OF ADAPTED SECONDARY EDUCATION

2016

The article addresses the following research question: Some years after having completed adapted secondary education, (a) how do former pupils assess their present status of MH and QoL, and (b) what aspects of the adapted education do they consider to have contributed positively to this status? The purpose of the study is to look for positive outcomes of adapted secondary education in pupils’ adult life, regarding their MH and QoL in particular. The study may also contribute knowledge that may be relevant in reducing drop-out from secondary vocational schools. Data collection was done by interviewing nine former pupils, all from the same school. Their statements were analyzed by a combinati…

Managing Trust and Risk in New Biotechnologies: The Case of Population Genome Project and Organ Transplantation in Latvia

2011

The paper analyses the application of the two biotechnologies – organ transplantation and population genome project in Latvian society. The case is based on 16 interviews with doctors, scientists, patients and donors and media texts discourse analysis. The notions of trust and risk emerge as a counterpart of coping with the challenges the technologies pose to the “traditional” relations between actors and concepts involved – organs, genes, illness, patients, doctors, hospital units and science. New biotechnologies erode previously stable categories and relationships between the notions and experiences of illness/ health, individual/collective, science/society, nature/culture, gift/market an…

When Meaning Matters: Coping Mediates the Relationship of Religiosity and Illness Appraisal with Well-Being in Older Cancer Patients

2018

When individuals face serious, traumatic illnesses such as cancer, religion can contribute to their coping processes and psychosocial adjustment. In the current study, we examined the relationship between religiosity conceptualized as the religious meaning system, illness appraisal, and psychological well-being with religious and nonreligious coping as potential mediators of this relationship among older cancer patients. In a cross-sectional design, 215 older Polish patients (60–83 years of age; 80% Catholic, 9% Protestant) with gastrointestinal cancer completed measures of religiosity, illness appraisal, religious coping, nonreligious coping, and psychological well-being. Using structural …

ESTRATEGIAS Y ESTILOS DE AFRONTAMIENTO PARENTAL EN FAMILIAS CON NIÑOS CON TRASTORNO DE ESPECTRO AUTISTA (TEA) CON O SIN TRASTORNO POR DÉFICIT DE ATEN…

2015

The Relation Between Maternal Locus of Control And Coping Styles of Pediatric Leukemia Patients During Treatment

2020

The present study focuses on the relation between coping strategies of children with leukemia during treatment and locus of control of their mothers. In particular, the study aims to determine whether maternal locus of control can influence sick children’s coping styles, and if this relation can be used to predict maladjustments. The study analyzed a cohort of 60 pediatric leukemia patients undergoing treatment and a group formed by their mothers. The participants were recruited from two Pediatric Onco- Hematology Units in Italy. The Child Behavioral Style Scale (CBSS) was used to assess children’s coping strategies, whereas the Parental Health Locus of Control Scale (PHLCS) was employed to…
