Dinuclear and tetranuclear complexes of copper coordinated by an anthracene-based new μ-bis(tridentate) ligand: Synthesis, structure, spectroscopy an…

2016

Abstract Copper(II) complexes of an anthracene-based new μ-bis(tridentate) ligand, N,N′-bis[anthracene-2-ylmethyl]-N,N′-bis[carboxymethyl]-1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol (H3acdp) with mixed donating groups, have been studied in solid state as well as in solution. The reaction of stoichiometric amounts of CuSO4·5H2O and the ligand H3acdp in the presence of NaOH at ambient temperature in methanol-dichloromethane, afforded a new dinuclear copper complex, [Cu2(acdp)(MeO)(MeOH)2] (1). On the other hand, the reaction of stoichiometric amounts of Cu(OAc)2·H2O and the ligand H3acdp in the presence of NaOH at ambient temperature in methanol-dichloromethane yielded, a novel tetranuclear copper complex, [Cu4(…

Highly selective fluorescence detection of hydrogen sulfide by using an anthracene-functionalized cyclam-CuII complex

2013

An anthracene-functionalised cyclam-copper(II) complex for the detection of HS- in aqueous environments has been prepared. This probe displays poor fluorescence but can selectively and sensitively detect HS- anions in water over other anions, biothiols and common oxidants such as H2O2 through remarkably enhanced emission. This turn-on response in the presence of the HS- anion is ascribed to a demetallation reaction that inhibits emission quenching observed in the initial complex as a result of the presence of the paramagnetic Cu2+ centre. Moreover, real-time fluorescence imaging measurements confirm that probe [Cu(1)](2+) can be easily used to detect intracellular HS- at micromolar concentr…

Electronic Interactions in a New π-Extended Tetrathiafulvalene Dimer

2006

The first pi-extended tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF) dimer in which the two exTTF units are covalently connected by 1,3-dithiole rings has been obtained in a multistep synthetic procedure involving the Ullmann cross-coupling reaction by using copper(I) thiophene-2-carboxylate (CuTC). The electronic spectrum reveals a significant electronic interaction between the exTTF units. The electrochemical study carried out by cyclic voltammetry in solution and in thin-layer conditions, and the electrochemical simulation and spectroelectrochemical (SEC) measurements confirm the electronic communication and show that the oxidation of dimer 14 occurs as two consecutive 2 e(-) processes D(0)-D(0)-->D(2+)-D(0…

Tiliroside and gnaphaliin inhibit human low density lipoprotein oxidation.

2004

Two flavonoids, gnaphaliin and tiliroside, isolated from Helichrysum italicum, were studied in vitro for their capacity to inhibit Cu(2+)-induced human low density lipoprotein (LDL) and diluted plasma oxidation. LDL oxidation was monitored by conjugated diene, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) formation and electrophoretic mobility on agarose gel. Gnaphaliin and tiliroside increased the lag-phase for diene conjugate production in a dose-dependent manner. The reduction of TBARS production confirmed the antioxidant activity of gnaphaliin and tiliroside with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC(50)) values of 8.0+/-3.9 microM and 7.0+/-2.6 microM respectively. Furthermore, the flavon…

Antioxidant activities of sicilian prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica) fruit extracts and reducing properties of its betalains: betanin and indicaxan…

2002

Sicilian cultivars of prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica) produce yellow, red, and white fruits, due to the combination of two betalain pigments, the purple-red betanin and the yellow-orange indicaxanthin. The betalain distribution in the three cultivars and the antioxidant activities of methanolic extracts from edible pulp were investigated. In addition, the reducing capacity of purified betanin and indicaxanthin was measured. According to a spectrophotometric analysis, the yellow cultivar exhibited the highest amount of betalains, followed by the red and white ones. Indicaxanthin accounted for about 99% of betalains in the white fruit, while the ratio of betanin to indicaxanthin varied fr…

The role of glutathione in protection against DNA damage induced by rifamycin SV and copper(II) ions.

1993

Incubation of calf thymus DNA in the presence of rifamycin SV induces a decrease in the absorbance of DNA at 260 nm. The effect, was found to be proportional to the antibiotic concentration and enhanced by copper(II) ions. In the presence of rifamycin SV and copper(II), a significant increase in thiobarbituric acid-reactive (TBA-reactive) material is also observed. This effect is inhibited to different degrees by the following antioxidants: catalase 77%; thiourea 72%; glutathione (GSH) 62%; ethanol 52%; and DMSO 34%, suggesting that both hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl radicals (OH.) are involved in DNA damage. Rifamycin SV-copper(II) mixtures were also found to induce the production …

Antioxidant Activity of Sicilian Pistachio (Pistacia veraL. Var. Bronte) Nut Extract and Its Bioactive Components

2007

Pistacia vera L. is the only species of Pistacia genus producing edible nuts. This paper investigates the antioxidant potential of a Sicilian variety of pistachio nut by chemical as well as biological assays and measured antioxidant vitamins and a number of antioxidant polyphenols in either the hydrophilic and/or the lipophilic nut extract. In accordance with the majority of foods, the total antioxidant activity, measured as a TAA test, was much higher (50-fold) in the hydrophilic than in the lipophilic extract. Substantial amounts of total phenols were measured. The hydrophilic extract inhibited dose-dependently both the metal-dependent and -independent lipid oxidation of bovine liver micr…

Spin Frustration in Triangular Cu 3 II Complexes with 6‐Methyl‐2‐pyridyloxime as Ligand – Synthesis, Structural, and Magnetic Characterization

2013

In the present work, new examples of μ3-OH/oximato Cu3 triangles have been obtained by treatment of different copper salts with 6-methyl-2-pyridylaldoxime [6-MepyC(H)NOH, 6-mepaoH]. Depending on the anion, the compounds [Cu3(OH)(6-mepao)3(O2CPh)2] (1), [Cu6(OH)2(6-mepao)6(NO3)3](NO3)·H2O (2·H2O) and [Cu6(OH)2(6-mepao)6(ClO4)3](ClO4) (3) formed and were characterized. Complex 1 is an isolated triangle, whereas 2 and 3 are hexanuclear compounds with two triangular subunits linked by anionic bridges. Susceptibility measurements show very strong antiferromagnetic interactions and the presence of antisymmetric exchange at low temperature. The magnetic properties of these frustrated triangles hav…

Revisiting the thiosemicarbazonecopper(II) reaction with glutathione. Activity against colorectal carcinoma cell lines.

2018

Thiosemicarbazones (TSCs), and their copper derivatives, have been extensively studied mainly due to the potential applications as antitumor compounds. A part of the biological activity of the TSC-CuII complexes rests on their reactivity against cell reductants, as glutathione (GSH). The present paper describes the structure of the [Cu(PTSC)(ONO2)]n compound (1) (HPTSC =pyridine-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone) and its spectroscopic and magnetic properties. ESI studies performed on the reaction of GSH with 1 and the analogous [{Cu (PTSC*)(ONO2)}2] derivative (2, HPTSC* =pyridine-2-carbaldehyde 4N-methylthiosemicarbazone) show the absence of peaks related with TSC-Cu-GSH species. However GS…

Low and very low density lipoprotein composition and resistance to copper-induced oxidation are not notably modified in smokers.

1997

To study whether tobacco use was associated with oxidative phenomena affecting lipoproteins, we estimated susceptibility of LDL and VLDL to an in vitro copper-mediated oxidation, and measured serum autoantibody titers against oxidized LDL in 45 middle-age healthy nonsmokers, 35 smokers and 37 ex-smokers of both sexes, taking into account the detailed lipid composition of the lipoproteins. VLDL from female smokers had higher triglyceride, phospholipid, apolipoprotein E and alpha-tocopherol content and showed a higher rate of copper-induced oxidation in comparison with those from nonsmokers (P < or = 0.05) whereas the relative composition of these particles in saturated, mono- or poly-unsatur…
