Preliminary study on the laser cleaning of stainless steels after high temperature oxidation

Abstract The objective of the present work was to estimate the influence of pulsed laser irradiation on the removal of the oxide layer, which is developed on the surface of stainless steels during their exposure to high temperature oxidation. In general, this layer is a protective one, mainly against corrosion. However, in many manufacturing applications or maintenance work, the removal of the oxides is necessary; for example, the metallic surfaces should be cleaned before welding, otherwise the presence of oxides increases the tendency to brittle behaviour of the joint. An automated procedure for computing the packing properties of dense and locked sands by image analysis of thin sections

The macroscopic mechanical behaviour of dense sands originates to a great extent from their microstructural characteristics such as the coordination number, the grain contact and the packing density indexes. The study of intergranular contacts and the reckoning of these indexes may be carried out on planar images of the grains either by means of time-consuming visual inspection assisted by CAD or by automatic image analysis. Engineering failure analysis of corroded R.C. beams in flexure and shear

Abstract In the present paper, a simple model to reproduce the load-deflection response of corroded beams failing in flexure and shear is presented and discussed. Effects of diffused and pitting corrosion on steel bars, compressive concrete strength degradation and concrete bond strength degradation due to rust formation are included in the model. Effect of silicon on corrosion resistance of Ti–Si alloys

Abstract The corrosion resistance of Ti–Si alloys has been studied in acid solutions and the alloys exhibit a high resistance to corrosion. SEM examinations combined with EDAX allowed to conclude that the passive films on Ti–Si alloys are mainly composed of TiO 2 /SiO 2 oxides. XPS analysis indicated the formation of Si–O and Si–O–Ti bonds in the passive film, respectively corresponding to SiO 2 and Si-doping TiO 2 . The reaction of phosphoric acid with steel is a basic process in many technological procedures. A typical example is the pretreatment of steel surfaces for the application of coatings. The aim of the treatment is to clean the surface, to produce a homogeneousr tight, and smooth cover and to provide a reliable adhesion between the steel substrate and the coating. This example points out that the phase composition of the layer formed is of great interest, and that reactions with residues on the surface, such as oxides and corrosion products, have to be considered, too. Properties of sintered Al substituted NdFeB magnets

The effect of partial substitution of Fe by Al (Al, Al 2 O 3) on the magnetic properties and the corrosion resistance of the sintered NdFeB magnet has been investigated. With the increasing amount of Al, the anisotropy field and the saturation magnetization decrease, but the coercivity increases up to 4 at.% Al and further alloying of Al leads to a decrease of the coercivity. Different substances like Al (metallic Al or Al 2 O 3) modify the microstructure to different increase in the coercivity and especially to changes in the remanence. Statistical prediction of corrosion front penetration

A statistical method to predict the stochastic evolution of corrosion fronts has been developed. The method is based on recording material loss and maximum front depth. In this paper we introduce the method and test its applicability. In the absence of experimental data we use simulation data from a three-dimensional corrosion model for this test. The corrosion model simulates localized breakdown of a protective oxide layer, hydrolysis of corrosion product and repassivation of the exposed surface. Influence of Plastic Deformation on the Corrosion Behaviour of As-Cast AlMg2 and AlCu4Mg1 Aluminium Alloys in NaCl Solution

The influence of plastic deformation on the corrosion behavior of as-cast AlMg2 and AlCu4Mg1 aluminum alloys was studied at the microscale using the Electrochemical Microcell Technique and surface microgauges. It was shown that large strain gradients develop locally. The corrosion behavior of both alloys was affected by plastic deformation. The most active sites contain large strain gradients in AlMg2 and cracks with damage in the matrix in AlCu4Mg1.

Abstract Tribocorrosion is of complex nature as it involves multiscale interactions between mechanical, (electro-)chemical, physical, and material factors.
