Nasal Cellularity in 183 Unselected Schoolchildren Aged 9 to 11 Years
2002
Objective. Although rhinitis is extremely frequent in children, methods for assessing the severity of nasal inflammation produce results with wide variability and hence weak clinical significance. We designed this epidemiologic investigation to define the clinical usefulness of assessing nasal cellularity in children. Methods. We studied 183 of 203 eligible unselected schoolchildren who were aged 9 to 11 years and whose parents gave informed consent and completed a questionnaire on the history of atopic and respiratory symptoms. In all children, nasal swabs were obtained from both nostrils and eluted in saline and slides were prepared from cytospin preparations for staining and white cell c…
Gabor systems and almost periodic functions
2017
Abstract Inspired by results of Kim and Ron, given a Gabor frame in L 2 ( R ) , we determine a non-countable generalized frame for the non-separable space AP 2 ( R ) of the Besicovic almost periodic functions. Gabor type frames for suitable separable subspaces of AP 2 ( R ) are constructed. We show furthermore that Bessel-type estimates hold for the AP norm with respect to a countable Gabor system using suitable almost periodic norms of sequences.
Amministrazione di risultati e certezza del diritto: una lettura contemporanea

The contribution deals with the analysis and historical vision of the dysfunctions of the Administration, the evolutionary dynamics of the same public duty as an organization and administrative function, which also constitutes the frame of reference and the conceptual substrate to approach the most recent and complete theorizing, positivization of the legal formula of the Administration of results that, by now, for twenty years, has progressively established itself as a general category. In particular, the season of change that has marked the evolution of the Administration of results is deepened, starting from the unprecedented interpretative operation of definition and synchronization – i…
Changes in the value relevance of goodwill accounting following the adoption of IFRS 3
2014
Abstract This study examines the value relevance effects of changes in goodwill accounting in a European setting. International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) 3 replaced accounting rules that emphasized goodwill amortization over short useful lives which kept goodwill balances low. Goodwill accounting under IFRS 3 largely relies on manager fair value estimates of acquired business units. Using Swedish data, we show that goodwill amortizations were not value-relevant prior to the adoption of IFRS 3. However, impairments reported in addition to amortization were significantly related to stock returns during that period. In contrast, under the impairment-only regime prescribed by IFRS 3, …
Implementation of IFRS in Japan: An Analysis of Voluntary Adoption by Listed Firms
2019
Since 2010 Japanese listed firms can voluntarily use international financial reporting standards for their consolidated financial statements. Using financial and non-financial data, we carry out a comprehensive research into the adopters’ determinants. We employ a multi-period logit model that considers every annual decision made along the period 2010-2019. We find that the having outside networks through subsidiaries and a strong internal corporate governance system are key factors. We also confirm a contagion effect. Finally, our results suggest that goodwill is also relevant, since only Japanese accounting standards require annual amortization.
Counter-Clock World: How Planning Backwards Helps in Moving Forward in Collapsing Environments
2021
Research on corporate decline and turnarounds as well as the strategic use of history have so far remained two separate research fields. We integrate these two fields with a thought experiment, proposing ways in which strategists can work with, and through time in managing and turning around declines. Our thought experiment involves two very different types of analogies: a textual one from Philip K. Dick’s science fiction novels, on the one hand, and a visual one from Einsteinian relativity science, on the other hand. Inspired and informed by these different conceptualizations of the past and time, we develop four forms of backward strategizing to successfully manage a struggling corporatio…
The logarithmic transformation should be avoided for stabilising the variance of mould growth rate.
2007
Abstract Radial growth rate, μ (mm d − 1 ) was evaluated by plotting the radius of the colony, r (mm) versus time (d) for Alternaria alternata , Aspergillus flavus , Cladosporium cladosporioides , Mucor racemosus , Rhizopus oryzae and Trichoderma harzianum at different T and a w . For each of the 12 data sets, an analysis of variance of the raw growth rate data was performed. It was observed from the P -values that all square-root transformed values of μ were non-significant at the significance level α = 0.05, whereas for untransformed values of μ , three of the 12 values were significant and for logarithmically transformed μ , nine of the 12 values were significant at the significance lev…
Systemic schistosomiasis and large bowel perforation: An unexpected surgical urgency. Report of a case and literature review
2019
Key Clinical Message In the presence of suggestive clinical picture (high eosinophil count and multiple CT scan granuloma‐like lesions), schistosomiasis should be taken into account in case of suspected bowel perforation even if common risk factors are not identified through anamnesis.
Hookworm-like eggs in children’s faecal samples from a rural area of Rwanda
2016
Background: Hookworm eggs identification and quantification is usually carried out by Kato-Katz method. However various structures present in the smear may be confused with eggs of such parasites. Objective: To document the presence of structures in Kato-Katz slides that could initially be misinterpreted as hookworm eggs. Method: 497 faecal samples were analysed by Kato-Katz technique, diphasic concentration technique, agar-plate coprocultive and larvae obtained were analysed by PCR and characterized by sequencing. Result: Hookworm-like eggs were found in 159 (32%) of the samples by Kato Katz, finally identified as Caenorhabditis elegans by PCR technique. Conclusion: The diagnosis of human …
Surface-anchored counterions on weak chiral anion-exchangers accelerate separations and improve their compatibility for mass-spectrometry-hyphenation
2017
In the present work we propose new variants of chiral stationary phases (CSP) with tert-butylcarbamoylquinine (tBuCQN) as chiral selector molecule. Four tBuCQN-CSPs with distinct bonding chemistries are compared in terms of their pH-dependent surface charge by ζ-potential determinations, by achiral and chiral liquid chromatographic tests and LC-ESI-MS hyphenation. In one embodiment tBuCQN was immobilized on 3-mercaptopropylmethylsilyl-modified silica by thiol-ene click reaction (brush type CSP with selector coverage of 0.38mmol/g). In another embodiment, poly-(3-mercaptopropyl)-methylsiloxane was coated onto vinylized silica particles in presence of tBuCQN and radical initiator. The tBuCQN …
