Evaluation of a new pooling strategy based on leukocyte count for rapid quantification of allele frequencies.
2007
Abstract Background: Allele frequencies of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) can be quantified from DNA pools. The conventional preparation of DNA pools requires DNA isolation and quantification for each blood sample. We hypothesized that pooling of whole blood samples according to their leukocyte count, which determines DNA content, would be as reliable as the conventional pooling method but much less tedious to perform. Methods: We collected 100 whole blood samples and measured the leukocyte count. Samples were frozen until further use. After thawing, pools were generated by combining aliquots containing an equal number of leukocytes. In parallel, DNA was extracted from another aliqu…
Die autoxydation von linolsäuremethylesterhydroperoxyd. Über die autoxydation ungesättigter verbindungen. XIII. Mitteilung
1961
Parallel Measurements of in-vivo Skin Autofluorescence Lifetimes and Photobleaching Rates
2015
Experimental methodology for parallel measurements of in-vivo skin autofluorescence (AF) lifetimes and photo-bleaching dynamic has been developed and tested. The AF lifetime decay distributions were periodically collected from fixed tissue area with subsequent detection of the fluorescence intensity decrease dynamic at different time shifts after the pulse excitation. Temporal distributions of skin AF lifetimes and bleaching dynamic were collected and analyzed by means of commercial time-correlated single photon counting system. Details of the equipment and data processing are described as well as some measurement results that confirm the feasibility of the proposed technology.
Implications of Managerial Framing of Stakeholders in Environmental Reports
2014
Corporate environmental reports are increasingly viewed as products of the managerial framing of responsibility and stakeholders. This notion encouraged us to conduct a multiple case study on how stakeholders are framed in environmental reports. We show how interaction between companies and stakeholders is described in the environmental reports of three firms operating in different business sectors – financial, aviation and energy – over a period of five years. We use an inductively oriented content analysis to identify five categories of relationships being constructed in the data: demanding, promoting, committing, donating and preventing. We then show how commitment and promotion dominate…
Application of propidium monoazide-qPCR to evaluate the ultrasonic inactivation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in fresh-cut vegetable wash water.
2012
The efficacy of sanitizing technologies in produce or in vegetable wash water is generally evaluated by plate count in selective media. This procedure is time consuming and can lead to misinterpretations because environmental conditions and sanitizing processes may affect bacterial growth or culturable capability. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the applicability of a propidium monoazide real-time PCR (PMA-qPCR) method to monitor the inactivation by ultrasound treatment of foodborne bacteria in fresh-cut vegetable wash water. To this aim, lettuce wash water was artificially inoculated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 (10⁶ CFU/mL) and treated by means of a continuous ultrasonic irr…
Could halophilic archaea improve the traditional salted anchovies (Engraulis encrasicholus L) safety and quality?
2010
Aims: The positive influence of two selected extremely halophilic archaea strains in the production of salted anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus, L., 1758) was highlighted. Methods and Results: Anchovies produced with salt artificially contaminated with halophiles exhibited lower loads of staphylococci, Enterobacteriaceae and lactic acid bacteria, and a reduced content of histamine as well as an improved organoleptic acceptance. Conclusions: The findings of this survey are expected to enhance the safety of salted anchovies, with regard to the histamine formation during ripening, and to improve the sensory attributes of this product. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study represents…
Dynamic Antigen Presentation Patterns of Listeria monocytogenes-Derived CD8 T Cell Epitopes In Vivo
2001
Abstract Little information exists regarding the presentation of antigenic peptides in infected tissues. In this study the in vivo presentation of four different CD8 T cell epitopes of Listeria monocytogenes was monitored. Peptide presentation was measured by a new, highly sensitive, ex vivo Ag presentation assay that was based on the testing of freshly isolated cells from infected spleens with peptide-specific CD8 T cell lines in an IFN-γ-specific ELISPOT assay. Remarkably, the peptide presentation pattern of splenocytes and that of macrophages purified from spleens of L. monocytogenes-infected mice were different from those of in vitro infected macrophage-like cell lines. The in vivo Ag p…

Financial Sustainability of Public Pension System
2021
The object of this chapter is the presentation of the budgetary system of public pension schemes in CEE countries, in terms of salary incomes taxation, in order to obtain the resources needed to finance social benefits, but also from the perspective of the level of benefits and the situation of budgetary balance.
Adoption and use of work-life initiatives: Looking at the influence of institutional pressures and gender
2015
Under the lens of Institutional Theory, this paper examines how coercive, normative and mimetic pressures on employers encourage the adoption and use of work-life balance. Analyzing a sample of Spanish private firms, we find that the diffusion of work-life practices may be explained as an isomorphic process in which particular normative pressure significantly influences the adoption and use of work-life programs, while mimetic pressures only affect the level of use. Interestingly, the presence of women in organizations is found to be relevant to the adoption and use of work-life benefits only when this presence refers to managerial positions.
