First observation and study of the K± → π±π0e+e− decay

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K-+/- -> pi(+/-)pi(0)e(+)e(-) decay from an exposure of 1.7 x 10(11) charged kaon decays recorded in 2003-2004. A sample of 4919 candidates with 4.9% background contamination allows the determination of the branching ratio in the full kinematic region, BR(K-+/- -> pi(+/-)pi(0)e(+)e(-)) = (4.24 +/- 0.14) x 10(-6). The study of the kinematic space shows evidence for a structure dependent contribution in agreement with predictions based on chiral perturbation theory. Several P- and CP-violating asymmetries are also evaluated.
Adaptive smoothing spline using non-convex penalties

We propose a new adaptive penalty for smoothing via penalized splines. The new form of adaptive penalization is based on penalizing the differences of the coefficients of adjacent bases, using non-convex penalties. This makes possible to estimate curves with varying amounts of smoothness. Comparisons with respect to some competitors are presented.

This article investigated the Conditioned Place Preference (CPP) technique as a useful model for studying the motivational properties of drugs of abuse. The background of the technique is presented. Methodological issues that need to be considered when designing a study using CPP are discussed. Rare earth elements (REE) are important in numerous high technology applications and in addition their supply risk is high, which gives rise to studying new sources for rare earth elements. Rare earth element concentrations in industrial fly ash samples collected from Finnish power plants, using a mixture of peat and biomass as a fuel, have been determined. Two sample pre-treatment methods, ultrasound- and microwave-assisted acid digestions, have been applied to fly ash samples.
