Optical multichannel monitoring of skin blood pulsations for cardiovascular assessment

2004

Time resolved detection and analysis of the skin back-scattered optical signals (reflection photoplethysmography or PPG) provide rich information on skin blood volume pulsations and can serve for cardiovascular assessment. The multichannel PPG concept has been developed and clinically verified in this work. Simultaneous data flow from several body locations allows to study the heartbeat pulse wave propagation in real time and to evaluate the vascular resistance. Portable two- and four-channel PPG monitoring devices and special software have been designed for real-time data acquisition and processing. The multi-channel devices were successfully applied for cardiovascular fitness tests and fo…

Image Processors for Digital Angiography Algorithms and Architectures

1986

After a period of experimental and clinical development,(1–9) digital processing of angiographic X-ray video image sequences is now routinely applied in clinical and research work. The clinical advantages offered by this approach have been discussed in several reports.(10–12) The primary application is the improved visualization of regions of the heart and circulation opacified by X-ray contrast material during angiographic and angiocardiographic examinations. More complex techniques are being developed for improved functional analysis based on digitized angiograms. Technically, the digital techniques also potentially offer improved means of acquiring, storing, and handling images when comp…

Projection and Pinhole-Based Data Acquisition for Small-Animal SPECT Using Storage Phosphor Technology

2007

Three-dimensional Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) can provide high-resolution insight into biomolecular distribution and pharmacokinetics. However, instrument availability and distribution is limited at present, and imaging times can be considerable. To evaluate the large array of novel agents which are becoming available,we find that storage phosphor-based in vivo imaging can provide an important,rapid-throughput transition from the traditional ex vivo sacrifice/gamma counting and autoradiography to full-time course SPECT.

Cytomegalovirus and inflammatory bowel disease: Is there a link?

2006

The objective of this report is to give an overall view of the epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic features of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A review of published reports on this topic was carried out, with particular attention paid to the selection of patients included in studies and the diagnostic methods employed. CMV is frequently associated with IBD. In some cases, CMV infection is associated with a poor outcome but it is not clear which patients are more likely to be affected and in which stage of the disease. The use of anti-viral therapy in IBD is controversial and an empirical study with controls is needed. The natural histor…

INTEGRATED EFFICACY RESULTS FROM THE PHASE 2 AND PHASE 3 STUDIES WITH CAPLACIZUMAB IN PATIENTS WITH ACQUIRED THROMBOTIC THROMBOCYTOPENIC PURPURA

2021

Objective: An integrated analysis based on the Phase 2 TITAN (NCT01151423) and Phase 3 HERCULES (NCT02553317) studies with caplacizumab (CPLZ) in acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (aTTP) was performed to assess treatment differences on efficacy and safety outcomes that may have been undetected in the individual trials. Methodology: In both trials, patients with an acute episode of aTTP were randomized to receive CPLZ or placebo (PBO) in addition to therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) and immunosuppression. All randomized patients from both studies were included in the integrated efficacy analyses (CPLZ: n=108; PBO: n=112), and those who received at least 1 dose of the study drug we…

Combined use of antifibrinolytics and activated prothrombin complex concentrate (aPCC) is not related to thromboembolic events in patients with acqui…

2019

Antifibrinolytics combined with aPCC are not routinely administered to patients with acquired hemophilia A due to increased thrombotic risk. This association normalizes clot stability, and improves the efficacy of therapy, but can increase the risk of severe side effects. Due to these premises it has always raised doubts and perplexities in the clinics. We now report the data of the "FEIBA® on acquired haemophilia A Italian Registry (FAIR Registry)", a retrospective-prospective study that included 56 patients. This is the first study that assessed the clinical response of the combination of aPCC and antifibrinolytic agents in patients with acquired haemophilia A. A total of 101 acute bleeds…

Patógenos atípicos en pacientes hospitalizados con neumonía adquirida en la comunidad: una perspectiva mundial

2018

Abstract Background Empirical antibiotic coverage for atypical pathogens in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) has long been debated, mainly because of a lack of epidemiological data. We aimed to assess both testing for atypical pathogens and their prevalence in hospitalized patients with CAP worldwide, especially in relation with disease severity. Methods A secondary analysis of the GLIMP database, an international, multicentre, point-prevalence study of adult patients admitted for CAP in 222 hospitals across 6 continents in 2015, was performed. The study evaluated frequency of testing for atypical pathogens, including L. pneumophila, M. pneumoniae, C. pneumoniae, and their prevalence. Ris…

[Paediatric cochlear implantation in the critical period of the auditory pathway, our experience].

2009

Numerous experimental and clinical studies have suggested a critical or sensitive period in which the auditory pathway develops its greatest potential in terms of plasticity and learning. Early cochlear implantation performed in prelingual deaf children in this period provides a better prognosis for language acquisition. The aim of this study is to show the importance of cochlear implantation before this critical period ends.We conducted an observational, longitudinal, retrospective study of 57 children suffering profound prelingual bilateral sensorineural hearing loss who had received Advanced Bionics implants at our ENT department between June, 1998, and November, 2006. Data on their audi…

Circulating microRNAs can identify endotypes of community-acquired pneumonia

2019

Background: The identification of the host processes dysregulated in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) patients, especially in those who develop severe complications could be crucial for future management of this disease. We aim to study microRNAs profiles to define different CAP endotypes regarding complications. Methods: An observational prospective study of consecutive hospitalized CAP cases was performed. Circulating microRNAs were analyzed using qRT-PCR. We study correlations and predictive value of miRNAs regarding severe sepsis and acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF: PaO2/FiO2 Results: We analyzed clinical data and blood samples from 169 CAP patients. The mean age was 66.9 ye…
