A low power and high resolution data logger for submarine seismic monitoring

2010

The design, implementation and characterization of a digital waveform recorder for ocean bottom seismic monitoring is here reported. The system is capable of synchronously acquiring, and logging on a flash memory bank, four high resolution signals. Thanks to a very careful design of the system architecture and by using robust digital signal processing techniques, two main conflicting issues have been addressed: a high dynamic range, better than 120 dB, usually obtained with high energy demanding converters, and a power consumption as low as 250 mW, hence allowing to easily increase the time of a continuous submarine monitoring session up to 3 months.

Non-Model Based Method for an Automation of 3D Acquisition and Post-Processing

2008

Most of the automation for 3D acquisition concerns objects with simple shape, like mechanical parts. For cultural heritage artefacts, the process is more complex, and it doesn't exist general solution nowadays. This paper presents a method to generate a complete 3D model of cultural heritage artefacts. In a first step, MVC is used to solve the view planning problem. Then, holes remaining in 3D model are detected, and their features are calculated to finish acquisition. Different post-processing are applied on each view to increase quality of the 3D model. This procedure has been tested with simulated scanner, before being implemented on a motion system with five degrees of freedom.

Continuous-flow tristimulus colorimetry: a new approach for gradient scanning techniques

1991

Abstract A flow-injection gradient scanning technique for colour evaluation by means of tristimulus colorimetry is described. Equipment and data acquisition requirements are discussed. The program CHROMA.FIA data the treatment and comparative chromatic analysis is presented. The chemical and flow conditions were optimized. Comparative studies using metallochromic indicators with both the flow-injection and the conventional batch procedures were made. The continuous-flow procedure provides good results and is more than fifteen times faster than the manual titrimetric procedure.

Characterization of DC series arc faults in PV systems based on current low frequency spectral analysis

2021

Abstract This work presents an experimental study focused on the characterization of series arc faults in direct current (DC) photovoltaic (PV) systems. The aim of the study is to identify some relevant characteristics of arcing current, which can be obtained by means of low frequency spectral analysis of current signal. On field tests have been carried out on a real PV system, in accordance with some tests requirements of UL 1699B Standard for protection devices against PV DC arc faults. Arcing and non-arcing current signals are acquired and compared and the behavior of a set of indicators proposed by authors is analyzed. Different measurement equipment have been used, in order to study th…

Knowledge acquisition through introspection in Human-Robot Cooperation

2018

Abstract When cooperating with a team including humans, robots have to understand and update semantic information concerning the state of the environment. The run-time evaluation and acquisition of new concepts fall in the critical mass learning. It is a cognitive skill that enables the robot to show environmental awareness to complete its tasks successfully. A kind of self-consciousness emerges: the robot activates the introspective mental processes inferring if it owns a domain concept or not, and correctly blends the conceptual meaning of new entities. Many works attempt to simulate human brain functions leading to neural network implementation of consciousness; regrettably, some of thes…

Learning paths on elementary university courses in Finnish as a second language

2015

Along with the growing degree of internationalisation, Finnish university education needs to address issues related to learning and teaching Finnish as a second language. From the perspective of teaching Finnish and related pedagogical development, it is essential to recognise when, where and for which purposes learners need Finnish at the various stages of the language acquisition process. This article focuses on the learning paths of three international students who studied Finnish on a one-term elementary course at the University of Jyvaskyla Language Centre. The article is based on a socio-cultural and ecological view on language learning and teaching. The data consist of learning diary…

An advanced system for the simulation and planning of orthodontic treatment

2000

This paper presents a new system for three-dimensional (3-D) orthodontic treatment planning and movement of teeth. We describe a computer vision technique for the acquisition and processing of 3-D images of the profile of hydrocolloid dental imprints. Profile measurement is based on the triangulation method which detects deformation of the projection of a laser line on the dental imprints. The system is computer-controlled and designed to achieve depth and lateral resolutions of 0.1 and 0.2 mm, respectively, within a depth range of 40 mm. The 3-D image of the imprint is segmented in order to identify different teeth. Two operators are presented: one for the detection of molars and premolars…

Wireless ECG and cardiac monitoring systems: State of the art, available commercial devices and useful electronic components

2021

Abstract Wireless ElectroCardioGram (ECG) systems are employed in manifold application fields: tele-monitoring, sport applications, support to ageing people at home, fetal ECG, wearable devices and ambulatory monitoring. The presence of cables often hinders user’s free movements, alongside clinicians’ routine operations. Therefore, wireless ECG systems are desirable. This paper aims at reviewing the solutions described in the literature, besides commercially available devices and electronic components useful to setup laboratory prototypes. Several systems have been developed, different in terms of the adopted technology; when approaching the development of a wireless ECG system, some import…

Improving light propagation Monte Carlo simulations with accurate 3D modeling of skin tissue

2008

In this paper, we present a 3D light propagation model to simulate multispectral reflectance images of large skin surface areas. In particular, we aim to simulate more accurately the effects of various physiological properties of the skin in the case of subcutaneous vein imaging compared to existing models. Our method combines a Monte Carlo light propagation model, a realistic three-dimensional model of the skin using parametric surfaces and a vision system for data acquisition. We describe our model in detail, present results from the Monte Carlo modeling and compare our results with those obtained with a well established Monte Carlo model and with real skin reflectance images.

Clinically-Driven Virtual Patient Cohorts Generation: An Application to Aorta

2021

The combination of machine learning methods together with computational modeling and simulation of the cardiovascular system brings the possibility of obtaining very valuable information about new therapies or clinical devices through in-silico experiments. However, the application of machine learning methods demands access to large cohorts of patients. As an alternative to medical data acquisition and processing, which often requires some degree of manual intervention, the generation of virtual cohorts made of synthetic patients can be automated. However, the generation of a synthetic sample can still be computationally demanding to guarantee that it is clinically meaningful and that it re…
