Microencapsulation of Salmonella-Specific Bacteriophage Felix O1 Using Spray-Drying in a pH-Responsive Formulation and Direct Compression Tableting o…

2019

The treatment of enteric bacterial infections using oral bacteriophage therapy can be challenging since the harsh acidic stomach environment renders phages inactive during transit through the gastrointestinal tract. Solid oral dosage forms allowing site-specific gastrointestinal delivery of high doses of phages, e.g., using a pH or enzymatic trigger, would be a game changer for the nascent industry trying to demonstrate the efficacy of phages, including engineered phages for gut microbiome modulation in expensive clinical trials. Spray-drying is a scalable, low-cost process for producing pharmaceutical agents in dry powder form. Encapsulation of a model Salmonella-specific phage (Myoviridae…

Improved Radio-Cesium Detection Using Quantitative Real-Time Autoradiography

2023

Cesium-134 and -137 are prevalent, long-lived, radio-toxic contaminants released into the environment during nuclear accidents. Large quantities of insoluble, respirable Cs-bearing microparticles (CsMPs) were released into the environment during the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. Monitoring for CsMPs in environmental samples is essential to understand the impact of nuclear accidents. The current detection method used to screen for CsMPs (phosphor screen autoradiography) is slow and inefficient. We propose an improved method: real-time autoradiography that uses parallel ionization multiplier gaseous detectors. This technique permits spatially resolved measurement of radioactivity while …

Trophic niche features influence microplastic ingestion in Mediterranean fish species

2022

Widespread microplastic (MP) contamination in the marine environment has raised global concern in the last decade. Scientific evidence of the adverse effects of MP on organisms is growing fast and there is urgent need to fulfil the knowledge gaps about the trophic drivers that lead to such contamination processes and resulting impacts. Fish are considered good bioindicators of MP contamination due to their easy availability, high ecological and commercial value, however our understanding of how trophic niche influences MP ingestion is limited. Here, we investigated the occurrence and abundance of MP in the gastrointestinal tract of 8 commercial fish species (Boops boops, Engraulis encrasico…

THE EFFECTS OF GROWTH REGULATORS ON IN VITRO AXILLARY SHOOT PROLIFERATION AND ROOTING OF ERICA MULTIFLORA

2012

Multiple shoots were induced on nodal segments of a mature plant of Erica multiflora L. Axillary shoots produced on uncontaminated explants were excised, segmented, and recultured on the same medium. The effect of Anderson medium, augmented with different concentrations of 2iP either singly or in combination with NAA, as potential medium for shoot multiplication by nodal segments was investigated. In the following experiment equal molar concentrations of four cytokinins (2iP, kinetin, zeatin, and BA) were studied for ability to induce axillary shoot development from single node stem segments. The highest rate of axillary shoot proliferation was induced on Anderson medium supplemented with 1…

Is It Possible to Produce Certified Hazelnut Plant Material in Sicily? Identification and Recovery of Nebrodi Genetic Resources, in vitro Establishme…

2021

Eight Sicilian cultivars of hazelnut (Corylus avellanaL.), namely-Curcia, Nociara Collica, Panottara Collica, Panottara Galati Grande, Parrinara, Panottara Baratta Piccola, Enzo, and Rossa Galvagno, registered into the Italian Cultivar Register of fruit tree species in 2017 were selected from Nebrodi area and establishedin vitro. The aim of the work was to carry out the sanitation of the cultivars and get virus-free plants from the most important viral pathogen threat, theapple mosaic virus. Virus-free plant material is essential for the production of certified plants from Sicilian hazelnut cultivars, complying the CE (cat. CAC) quality and the technical standards established in 2017 for vo…

In Vitro Regeneration of

2019

Three caper (Capparis spinosa L.) biotypes grown on the Sicilian island of Salina (38°33′49″ N) were micropropagated to evaluate two different in vitro culture systems: one using the traditional solid medium, and the other based on liquid culture in a PlantForm bioreactor. PlantForm is a temporary immersion system (TIS), a new propagation method in which the shoots undergo temporary immersion in a liquid medium in order to avoid the accumulation of gas through forced ventilation. This study proposes a protocol to improve the efficiency of in vitro propagation of caper plants, while also reducing production costs, because of the elimination of the gelling agent, and manual labor, requiring l…

Min-Type Control Strategy of a DC-DC Synchronous Boost Converter

2019

International audience; This paper presents the analysis and design of a min-type strategy to control a synchronous boost converter in continuous conduction mode. The strategy uses a nonlinear switching surface to establish the change of topology in the converter and is analyzed by means of a sliding-mode control approach. Subsequently, the min-type strategy is modified by a hybrid control formulation, which introduces a hysteresis width and a dwell-time to obtain a finite switching frequency in the start-up and steady-state respectively. The hybrid control formulation is implemented digitally by means of a microprocessor which processes the samples of inductor current and capacitor voltage…

Decomposition rate and biochemical fate of carbon from natural polymers and microplastics in boreal lakes

2022

Microbial mineralization of organic compounds is essential for carbon recycling in food webs. Microbes can decompose terrestrial recalcitrant and semi-recalcitrant polymers such as lignin and cellulose, which are precursors for humus formation. In addition to naturally occurring recalcitrant substrates, microplastics have been found in various aquatic environments. However, microbial utilization of lignin, hemicellulose, and microplastics as carbon sources in freshwaters and their biochemical fate and mineralization rate in freshwaters is poorly understood. To fill this knowledge gap, we investigated the biochemical fate and mineralization rates of several natural and synthetic polymer-deri…

Modelling the effects of cropping systems on weed dynamics: the trade-off between process analysis and decision support

2022

Models are essential to synthesize knowledge on weeds and to design integrated weed-management strategies. These models must rank cropping systems as a function of weed infestation, and account for variability in effects to estimate probabilities of success or failure. Three case studies are presented: (1) an empirical static single-equation model that directly relates weed biomass to crop management, with few inputs and parameters, (2) a matrix-based multiannual model predicting a few key weed stages annually, from weed control options and a few parameters, (3) a mechanistic process-based multiannual model predicting detailed soil, crop and weed state variables daily, with an individual-ba…
