This paper examines the specific strategies for recruitment and retention of volunteer transcribers in use in two collaborative transcription projects: Transcribe Bentham (University College, London) and the Estoria de Espanna Digital Project (University of Birmingham). The formation of aggregate expectations: wisdom of the crowds or media influence?

ABSTRACTThe general elections of 2015 in Spain were elections of change. Two new parties for which voters had no previous historical reference points burst onto the parliamentary scene. Two (partially) opposed theories vie to offer an explanation as to how voters build their aggregate electoral expectations. Hypothetical bias in equity crowdfunding

International audience; Young, entrepreneurial firms are particularly dependent on external investors to sustain their development. Are non-binding equity investment commitments informative? Our large sample evidence in the context of equity crowdfunding shows that only 18% of non-binding commitments made by investors in entrepreneurial firms are actually invested. The evidence is consistent with hypothetical bias. Hypothetical bias is significantly less pronounced among women, and among investors with greater social capital, proxied by education and wealth. Intellectual property management between buyer-supplier in the crowdsourcing context

In this paper we investigate the antecedents of buyers’ decisions related to the management of the IPR generated by the suppliers in crowdsourcing contests. Leveraging on Property Rights Theory and interview data, we examine how contest’ attributes affect two buyers’ decisions about (1) whether to define an IPR arrangement ex-ante or negotiating it ex-post with the winning supplier; (2) the choice between strong or weak ownership levels of the IPR arrangement. To test the developed hypotheses, we build a dataset of 819 contests broadcasted on InnoCentive (from 2010 to 2016). Our findings contribute to both the operations management and the crowdsourcing literatures.

Crowdboard: Augmenting in-person idea generation with real-time crowds

Online crowds can help infuse creativity into the design process, but traditional strategies for leveraging them, such as large-scale ideation platforms, require time and organizational effort in order to obtain results. We propose a new method for crowd-based ideation that simplifies the process by having smaller crowds join in-person ideators during synchronous creative sessions. The role of IPR arrangements in the crowdsourcing for innovation contest: an empirical investigation of the Innocentive challenges

In this study, we identify three different Intellectual Property Right arrangements- strong IPR (acquiring an IP), weak IPR (licensing agreement) and flexible IPR. Integrating Property Rights Theory and the open innovation literature, we propose that specific challenge attributes affect the seekers organizations’ choice between alternative IPR arrangements and how this choice, in turn, affects the self-selection of external solvers into solving the problem. From the crowd to the market: The role of reward-based crowdfunding performance in attracting professional investors

Abstract We focus on new technology-based entrepreneurial ventures engaging in reward-based crowdfunding and examine the effect of their performance in such funding channel on the likelihood of securing subsequent funding from professional investors. We also study how this effect is influenced by the presence of patents granted for the new product idea and the entrepreneur social capital. Results from a sample of technology projects launched on Kickstarter demonstrate that pledging a higher amount of money in crowdfunding can ignite professional investors’ interest and thus help secure subsequent funding.
