Does Government Spending Crowd Out Private Consumption and Investment?

2011

To counteract the impact of the financial crisis, governments have imple-mented significant fiscal stimulus packages that involve a combination of tax cuts and a boost in social and public infrastructure spending. While, before the turmoil, there was broad consensus that monetary policy should be the primary tool of stabilisation policy, and fiscal policy should play lit-tle role beyond allowing automatic stabilisers to operate, during the crisis almost all major countries adopted discretionary fiscal policy measures. In the debate on the fiscal policy response to the economic downturn, the effectiveness of fiscal policy to support the economy has, there-fore, regained importance and renewe…

Crowding y Overtourism en la literatura de turismo y cruceros

2020

[EN] The purpose of this article is to make a small analysis of the situation of Crowding and Overtourism literature in the tourism sector. In addition, the paper makes a special review of this literature with emphasis on cruise ship literature. Using the Web of Science as a basis, the study makes a brief bibliometric analysis of this literature. The purpose is to know the state of the art and main trends in this literature. In addition, the work aims to lay the foundations for a subsequent in-depth analysis of this literature. The work has implications for researchers, as it analyses gaps in the literature and new future trends. In addition, the work can help professionals to observe new p…

A GPU-Based Multi-agent System for Real-Time Simulations

2010

The huge number of cores existing in current Graphics Processor Units (GPUs) provides these devices with computing capabilities that can be exploited by distributed applications. In particular, these capabilites have been used in crowd simulations for enhancing the crowd rendering, and even for simulating continuum crowds. However, GPUs have not been used for simulating large crowds of complex agents, since these simulations require distributed architectures that can support huge amounts of agents. In this paper, we propose a GPU-based multi-agent system for crowd simulation. Concretely, we propose the use of an on-board GPU to implement one of the main tasks that a distributed server for c…

Technoscientific Citizenship in Citizen Science. Assembling Crowds for Biomedical Research

2020

This chapter explores “citizen science” as a contemporary variant of participatory citizenship. It analyzes how two biomedical online citizen science projects address potential participants. What does it mean to enact citizenship in these citizen science projects according to the self-descriptions of the projects? How do their web interfaces regulate participation?

Simulation-based Evacuation Planning for Urban Areas

2021

Evacuation planning is a critical task in disaster management. Especially in situations such as natural disasters or terrorist attacks, large crowds need to move away from danger and reach designated safe zones. For this purpose, various approaches that efficiently compute evacuation plans in urban areas have been proposed. To evaluate the computed plans, previous works employ heuristics that can only roughly estimate the egress time of each plan. Intuitively, a much better approach is to estimate the egress time via simulation. However, designing a simulation model is usually a time-consuming task and, what is more, this model can only be used to evaluate evacuation plans for a specific ar…

Let us sit on the terrace of a street cafe and watch the crowds pass by. The first basic unit we observe is the individual: tall, small, fat, long-faced, round-faced — the diversity is large. Among these individuals there will be a few with particular features, such as colour of skin or type of hair, which differ from the vast majority of local individuals, thereby indicating that they originated from another part of the world. We shall install a video camera at this site and will carry out the same observations simultaneously in Paris, Dakar, and Tokyo. When the films are then brought together and shown in the same room, the observers will not fail to note that the individuals of one city …

Analyzing Large-Scale Crowd Simulations for Building Evacuation

2010

Animated virtual crowds have been used last years for analyzing human factors in scenarios where masses of people gather. A typical example is building evacuation in case of fire. Scalability still remains as an open issue for these multiagent systems applications. In this paper, we use a scalable architecture to simulate a large-scale version of a virtual crowd in a building evacuation. From the social point of view, the results provided by the large-scale version of the crowd add new and crucial information about the agents behavior, emphasizing the need for a small amount of trained leaders in order to save lives. From the system point of view, the results show that the trend of avatars …

3D #DigitalInvasions: a crowdsourcing project for mobile user generated content

2015

This paper introduces the #InvasioniDigitali project which is an online crowdsourcing initiative started in Italy in 2013 with the aim to promote the value of and engagement with local heritage. The paper focuses on two case studies of pilot ‘invasions’ using 3D data capture by students at museums and heritage sites in Sicily.
