Role of nitric oxide pathway in the conditioned rewarding effects of MDMA in mice.

2017

It is estimated that 2.1 million young adults used MDMA/Ecstasy in the last year in Europe. Vulnerable subjects can develop dependence after MDMA abuse but currently there does not exist an effective treatment for this disorder. The nitric oxide (NO) pathway seems to have an important role on the rewarding effects of different drugs and has been proposed as a new pharmacological treatment for psychostimulant addiction. In the present study, we intend to evaluate whether the blockade of the NO synthesis (NOS) interferes with the rewarding effects of MDMA in the conditioned preference place (CPP) paradigm in young adult male mice. Our results indicated that mice treated with 7-nitroindazole (…

Increased visual cortical excitability in ecstasy users: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study

2003

To test the presence of abnormalities of visual cortical excitability in people using ecstasy as a recreational drug.Ecstasy users and control subjects underwent single pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the occipital cortex. The phosphene threshold was analysed and compared in the two groups.Phosphene thresholds were significantly lower in ecstasy users compared with control subjects, and were correlated negatively with frequency of ecstasy use. Frequency of use was positively correlated with the presence of visual hallucinations. The phosphene threshold of subjects with hallucinations was significantly lower than that of subjects without hallucinations. The use of ecstasy as …

A fatal paramethoxymethamphetamine intoxication.

2003

During the last years in Germany a marked increase in the use of amphetamines such as 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, ecstasy) has been observed. The use of these recreational drugs is especially common among young people participating in rave parties. Occasionally ring-methoxylated phenethylamine derivatives like paramethoxymethamphetamine (PMMA) or paramethoxyamphetamine (PMA) are found in street drugs offered as ecstasy. These compounds exhibit a higher toxicity than the methylenedioxyamphetamine derivatives. We report on the death of a 22-year-old man after the ingestion of ecstasy pills containing PMMA and PMA. The PMMA concentration in femoral blood was 0.85 mg/l. Besides PMA…

Scientific communication in museums through presential mediation : Case study le Pavillon des Sciences

2014

In science museums and science centers, "presential" mediation positioning a mediator and the public in the co-presence of objects within a dedicated environment, remains relatively unknown. From a Communication Science perspective, analyzing actual situations transcends the simple provision of information, and focuses on the significance of third party forms within the construction of meaning. Presential communication is transient and centered on the words and gestures of an embodied third party. It provides a greater potential for interactions around practical situations, unlike other media (i.e. an exhibition). The purpose of this research is to question the rightful place of these speci…

Efficient FPGA Implementation of an Adaptive Noise Canceller

2006

A hardware implementation of an adaptive noise canceller (ANC) is presented. It has been synthesized within an FPGA, using a modified version of the least mean square (LMS) error algorithm. The results obtained so far show a significant decrease of the required gate count when compared with a standard LMS implementation, while increasing the ANC bandwidth and signal to noise (S/N) ratio. This novel adaptive noise canceller is then useful for enhancing the S/N ratio of data collected from sensors (or sensor arrays) working in noisy environment, or dealing with potentially weak signals.

The promise of spintronics for unconventional computing

2021

Novel computational paradigms may provide the blueprint to help solving the time and energy limitations that we face with our modern computers, and provide solutions to complex problems more efficiently (with reduced time, power consumption and/or less device footprint) than is currently possible with standard approaches. Spintronics offers a promising basis for the development of efficient devices and unconventional operations for at least three main reasons: (i) the low-power requirements of spin-based devices, i.e., requiring no standby power for operation and the possibility to write information with small dynamic energy dissipation, (ii) the strong nonlinearity, time nonlocality, and/o…

Application based on dynamic reconfiguration of field-programmable gate arrays: JPEG 2000 arithmetic decoder

2005

This paper describes the implementation of a part of the JPEG 2000 algorithm (MQ decoder and arithmetic decoder) on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) board by using dynamic reconfiguration. A comparison between static and dynamic reconfiguration is presented, and new analysis criteria (spatiotemporal efficiency, logic cost, and performance time) have been defined. The MQ decoder and arithmetic decoder are attractive for dynamic reconfiguration implementation in applications without parallel processing. This implementation is done on an architecture designed to study the dynamic reconfiguration of FPGAs: the ARDOISE architecture. The obtained implementation, based on four partial config…

The epidemiology of anabolic-androgenic steroids use among secondary students (Valencia-Spain)

2019

The consumption of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) is continuously growing in recent years among young people. The purpose of the current study was to examine the proportion of students who reported AAS use, explore other drug use among them and finally to determine the sociodemographic profile of the AAS consumption amongst a sample of students in the Valencian Region (Spain). Method. Data was taken from a self-administrated survey of a representative sample of 1,1162 Valencian students. A total of 252 schools participated in the study. Results. The findings show that 3.3% of surveyed students reported that they had consumed AAS. Males reported to take anabolic more frequently than fema…
