Il corale matalizio "Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her" (Dall'alto dei cieli io giungo) è stato realizzato da Martin Lutero sulla base della melodia popolare "Ich komm aus fremden Landen her" e fu pubblicato per la prima volta a Wittenberg nel 1535. Assai diffuso in tutta l'area culturale tedesca, questo brano è stato ripreso, tra gli altri, anche da J.S. Bach, sia nel "Weinachts-Oratorium" BWV 248 che nelle "Canonische Veraenderungen" per organo BWV 796 e 796a. Modeling the Interaction of Carbon Monoxide with Flexible Graphene: From Coupled Cluster Calculations to Molecular-Dynamics Simulations

The interaction of CO with graphene was studied at different theoretical levels. Quantum-mechanical calculations on finite graphene models with the use of coronene for coupled cluster calculations and circumcoronene for B97D calculations showed that there was no preferential site for adsorption and that the most important factor was the orientation of CO relative to graphene. The parallel orientation was preferred, with binding energies around 9 kJ mol-1 at the CCSD(T) and B97D levels, which was in good agreement with experimental findings. A Grand Canonical Monte Carlo Study of the N2, CO, and Mixed N2–CO Clathrate Hydrates

In this paper we report the use of Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations to characterize the competitive trapping of CO and N2 molecules into clathrates, for various gas compositions in the temperature range from 50 to 150 K. The simulations evidence a preferential trapping of CO with respect to N2. This leads to the formation of clathrates that are preferentially filled with CO at equilibrium, irrespective of the composition of the gas phase, the fugacity, and the temperature. Interfacial tension of the isotropic-nematic interface in suspensions of soft spherocylinders.

The isotropic to nematic transition in a system of soft spherocylinders is studied by means of grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The probability distribution of the particle density is used to determine the coexistence density of the isotropic and the nematic phases. The distributions are also used to compute the interfacial tension of the isotropic--nematic interface, including an analysis of finite size effects. Our results confirm that the Onsager limit is not recovered until for very large elongation, exceeding at least L/D=40, with L the spherocylinder length and D the diameter. Wetting of a short chain liquid on a brush: First-order and critical wetting transitions

We investigate the wetting behaviour of short chains on a surface covered with a brush of end-grafted chains of the same architecture by a combination of self-consistent field calculations and liquid-state theory. The surface interacts with the monomers via (non-retarded) van der Waals interactions of strength A. At low grafting densities, we find first-order wetting transitions. The value of the effective Hamaker constant Awet > 0, at which the transition occurs, decreases and the strength of the first-order transition becomes weaker as we increase the grafting density. Depletion induced isotropic-isotropic phase separation in suspensions of rod-like colloids

When non-adsorbing polymers are added to an isotropic suspension of rod-like colloids, the colloids effectively attract each other via depletion forces. We performed Monte Carlo simulations to study the phase diagram of such rod-polymer mixture. The colloidal rods were modeled as hard spherocylinders; the polymers were described as spheres of the same diameter as the rods. The polymers may overlap with no energy cost, while the overlap of polymers and rods is forbidden. Large amounts of depletant cause phase separation of the mixture. Sard property for the endpoint map on some Carnot groups

In Carnot-Caratheodory or sub-Riemannian geometry, one of the major open problems is whether the conclusions of Sard's theorem holds for the endpoint map, a canonical map from an infinite-dimensional path space to the underlying finite-dimensional manifold. The set of critical values for the endpoint map is also known as abnormal set, being the set of endpoints of abnormal extremals leaving the base point. We prove that a strong version of Sard's property holds for all step-2 Carnot groups and several other classes of Lie groups endowed with left-invariant distributions. Wetting of polymer liquids: Monte Carlo simulations and self-consistent field calculations

Using Monte Carlo simulations and self-consistent field (SCF) theory we study the surface and interface properties of a coarse grained off-lattice model. In the simulations we employ the grand canonical ensemble together with a reweighting scheme in order to measure surface and interface free energies and discuss various methods for accurately locating the wetting transition. In the SCF theory, we use a partial enumeration scheme to incorporate single-chain properties on all length scales and use a weighted density functional for the excess free energy.
