ATP4A autoimmunity in pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes and its relationship to blood count, iron metabolism, and vitamin B12
2017
Objective We aimed to assess the prevalence of autoantibodies against the 4A subunit of the gastric proton pump (ATP4A) in pediatric type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients and explore the relationship between ATP4A positivity and blood cell count, iron turnover, and vitamin B12 concentration. Subjects The study included 94 (59% female) T1D children (aged 12.5 ± 4.1 years, T1D duration 4.2 ± 3.6 years, HbA1c 7.3 ± 1.5% (57 ± 12.6 mmol/mol) with no other autoimmune diseases. Methods ATP4A antibodies were measured in T1D patients using a radioimmunoprecipitation assay. Blood cell count, iron concentration, total iron binding capacity, ferritin, transferrin, hepcidin, and vitamin B12 concentration were…
Sensitivity of the central visual field in 70- to 81-year-old male athletes and in a population sample.
1994
The sensitivity of the central visual field (0°–30°) was studied using an automatic Octopus 500E perimeter in elderly male athletes and in a population sample of men of corresponding age. The athletes (N=96) were endurance and power athletes, who were still active in competitive sports with training histories spanning tens of years. The athletes’ results were compared with those of a sample of men of the same age (70–81 years, N=41) randomly selected from the local population register. The sensitivity values of the athletes, and the endurance athletes in particular, were significantly better than those of the controls, with differences varying from 1 to 2.5 dB in the different areas of the …
Effect of Dietaryn-3Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids on Oxidant/Antioxidant Status in Macrosomic Offspring of Diabetic Rats
2014
The aim of this work was to determine the effect of dietaryn-3PUFA on oxidant/antioxidant status,in vitrovery low and low density lipoprotein (VLDL-LDL), and VLDL-LDL-fatty acid composition in macrosomic pups of diabetic mothers. We hypothesized thatn-3PUFA would improve oxidative stress in macrosomia. Diabetes was induced in female Wistar rats fed with the ISIO diet (control) or with the EPAX diet (enriched inn-3PUFAs), by streptozotocin. The macrosomic pups were killed at birth (day 0) and at adulthood (day 90). Lipid parameters and VLDL-LDL-fatty acid composition were investigated. The oxidant/antioxidant status was determined by measuring plasma oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC)…
Resolvin D1 and miR‐146a are independent distinctive parameters in children with moderate and severe asthma
2020
To date, a large number of mediators and biomarkers have been detected in childhood asthma, with a potential role in monitoring the disease course. Lung function evaluation through spirometry, forced oscillation technique and multiple breath washout proved its role in asthma monitoring, especially for investigating small airway impairment in children with more severe symptoms. Recently, novel specialized pro-resolving mediators, such as resolvins and lipoxins, have been recognized as crucial in promoting the resolution of lung inflammation. Increasing evidence suggests that miRNAs are crucially entailed in asthma. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (plsDA) is a modern technique for…
Effect of physical training on exercise capacity, gas exchange and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide levels in patients with chronic heart fai…
2006
BACKGROUND: Decreased exercise capacity is the main factor restricting the daily life of patients with chronic heart failure. N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT pro-BNP) is strongly related to the severity of and is an independent predictor of outcome in chronic heart failure. DESIGN: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of exercise training on functional capacity and on changes in NT pro-BNP levels and to assess the effect of exercise training on quality of life. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients (45 men/15 women, mean age 52.7 years; +/-5.3 SD), with stable heart failure (45 ischaemic/hypertensive and 15 idiopathic patients), in New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional…
Oral health and reduction in respiratory capacity in a cohort of community-dwelling elderly people: a population-based 5-year follow-up study.
2004
Objectives: Several anaerobic bacteria originating in periodontal pockets have been isolated from infected lungs and pharyngeal microflora. Increased bacterial load in lungs is known to be a risk factor for decline in forced expiratory volume during the first second. The aim was to evaluate both cross-sectionally and longitudinally the association between oral health status and forced expiratory volume during the first second (FEV1) in older residents of the city of Jyvaskyla, Finland. Design: Cross-sectional and prospective cohort study over a 5-year follow-up. Setting: Research laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla. Participants: In 1990 dental status and FEV1 were examined in 203…
Changes of neurohumoral parameters and endothelin-1 in response to exercise in patients with mild to moderate congestive heart failure
1998
Plasma endothelin levels are increased in patients with moderate and severe CHF. Conflicting data exist about the endothelin-1 (ET) level in patients with mild to moderate CHF and the effect of maximal exercise on plasma ET levels. We determined the plasma levels of ET and various neurohumoral parameters in 93 patients with CHF in functional class II and III of the NYHA classification at rest and after maximal bicycle exercise. Baseline ET level was increased compared to an age-matched healthy volunteer group (6.95+/-0.31 vs 3.29+/-0.17 pg/ml, mean+/-S.E.M., P0.05), without significant differences between NYHA class II and III patients. Maximal exercise did not increase the ET level. In cont…
Combined resistance and endurance training at a moderate-to-high intensity improves physical condition and quality of life in liver transplant patien…
2017
Background: Although currently, moderate and high intensity concurrent physical exercise is prescribed in populations with special needs due to its greater effect on physical condition and health-related quality of life (HRQOL), there are no data in the liver transplantation (LT) setting. Aim: To evaluate changes in maximal strength, aerobic capacity, body composition, liver function, and HRQOL in LT patients after a moderate to high intensity combined resistance-endurance training. Material and methods: 6 months after LT, 54 patients were randomized into two groups: intervention group (IG) and control group (CG). 50 patients completed the study with repeat testing at 6 and 12 months after …
Aerobic performance capacity in athletes
1978
Maximal oxygen uptake (max\(\dot V\)O2) in leg and arm work, succinate dehydrogenase activity (SDH) and percentage of slow twitch fibers (%ST fibers) in M. vastus lateralis (VL), M. gastrocnemius c.l. (GL) and M. deltoideus (D) were studied in 89 athletes practising 11 different sport events. It was found that maximal oxygen uptake correlated positively with %ST fibers and SDH activity in M. VL. The SDH activity and %ST fibers in M. VL correlated also with one another. The results suggest that oxidative capacity of the muscles is not the limiting factor for maximal oxygen uptake. The role of the oxidative capacity of the muscles might be important during submaximal work of long duration and…
Home-based inspiratory muscle training for management of older patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: does baseline inspirator…
2019
Background:Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction is a clinical syndrome characterised by reduced exercise capacity. Some evidence has shown that a simple and home-based programme of inspiratory muscle training offers promising results in terms of aerobic capacity improvement in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. This study aimed to investigate whether the baseline inspiratory muscle function predicts the changes in aerobic capacity (measured as peak oxygen uptake; peak VO2) after a 12-week home-based programme of inspiratory muscle training in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Methods:A total of 45 stable symptomatic patients wi…
