Different Behaviour of Plasma Antioxidant Status after Red Wine Consumption in Subjects of the Same Sex: A Preliminary Report

2012

<p>Several studies report that the plasma antioxidant capacity (PAC) increases after a single ingestion of red wine. However, data on the different behaviour of PAC after food intake in subjects of the same sex are still lacking. On the basis of these observations some investigations were undertaken in order to evaluate the effects of red wine intake on PAC in a homogeneous groups of healthy female volunteers (n=18). Additionally, the possible correlation between increase of PAC values and increase in uric acid levels was also assessed. PAC and uric acid concentrations were determined before wine intake and 50, 120 and 240 minutes thereafter. The results obtained following these studi…

Correlations for estimating the specific capital cost of multi-effect distillation plants considering the main design trends and operating conditions

2018

Abstract This work proposes a correlation for the specific capital cost of multi-effect distillation (MED) plants, considering their main design options and parameters, such as the number of effects, size/capacity, and heat source temperature. These parameters are varied within a large range to cover as many different cases as possible. The cost correlation decouples the evaporator cost and includes in the expression the ratio of the heat exchanger area to a reference one. This area is calculated using a validated MED numerical model, with the results then processed to produce fitted expressions. Two versions of this correlation with different levels of complexity are proposed, which provid…

Simulation studies of fluid critical behaviour

1997

We review and discuss recent advances in the simulation of bulk critical phenomena in model fluids. In particular we emphasise the extensions to finite-size scaling theory needed to cope with the lack of symmetry between coexisting fluid phases. The consequences of this asymmetry for simulation measurements of quantities such as the particle density and the heat capacity are pointed out and the relationship to experiment is discussed. A general simulation strategy based on the finite-size scaling theory is described and its utility illustrated via Monte-Carlo studies of the Lennard-Jones fluid and a two-dimensional spin fluid model. Recent applications to critical polymer blends and solutio…

Safety in Hazelnut Mechanical Harvesting

2022

Hazelnut cultivation occupies an area of about 13,000 ha in Sicily, 10,000 of which are concentrated in the province of Messina, specifically in the pedo-mountain municipalities of the Nebrodi. These are heterogeneous plants by cultivar and planting time. To date, the hazelnut represents a scarcely mechanized marginal crop, with a characteristic training system as the multi stemmed bush. The harvest takes place as soon as the hazelnuts reach maturity and detach from the herbaceous dome that surrounds them falling to the ground. Before harvesting, swathing is carried out by hand using rakes, or facilitated by backpack blowers, or mechanically by means of a swather or with a tractor-mounted b…

Competitive firms in thin regions in Norway: The importance of workplace learning

2015

The article departs from empirical studies of two competitive firms in an organisationally thin region in Norway. The main question in the article is how these firms have achieved global competitiveness. The article focuses its inquiry on how the firms organise their innovation activity, giving special attention to the firms' organisational learning and absorptive capacity. It is found that find that workplace learning enables the firms to utilise knowledge in uncommon ways. The learning rests on specific organisational traits in the firms, such as broad participation, long-term on-the-job training, the use of practice-based knowledge in innovation projects, and links to national and global…

Retention behaviour of volatile compounds in normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography on a diol column

1993

Abstract Retention data on a diol column for over 300 compounds of the chemical classes usually contained in aroma extracts of plants and foodstuffs are reported. A concept that largely corrects for minor fluctuations of the mobile phase composition and of the flow-rate was used to measure capacity factors. The mobile phase was composed of pentane and diethyl ether. The high volatility of these two solvents makes the method perfectly adaptable to the prefractionation of aroma extracts and the semi-preparative isolation of compounds. Non-polar compounds such as hydrocarbons are not retained on diol. Polar compounds can be readily eluted, with the exception of strong acids and bases.

Advanced 3D movement analysis algorithms for robust functional capacity assessment.

2017

SummaryObjectives: We developed a novel system for in home functional capacities assessment in frail older adults by analyzing the Timed Up and Go movements. This system aims to follow the older people evolution, potentially allowing a forward detection of motor decompensation in order to trigger the implementation of rehabilitation. However, the pre-experimentations conducted on the ground, in different environments, revealed some problems which were related to KinectTM operation. Hence, the aim of this actual study is to develop methods to resolve these problems. Methods: Using the KinectTM sensor, we analyze the Timed Up and Go test movements by measuring nine spatio-temporal parameters, …

Déterminisme du pouvoir protecteur de Fusarium oxysporum : recherche de gènes impliqués dans l'interaction protectrice avec la tomate

2007

Fusarium oxysporum is a common soil borne fungus, well represented in every type of soils, throughout the world. This species includes pathogenic strains inducing severe diseases in many crops and strains able to protect a plant against the infection by a pathogenic strain. The protective strains are not only non pathogenic strains isolated from suppressive soils but also pathogenic strains applied to a non host plant. The protective capacity of these strains is mainly based on mechanisms of competition and induced resistance of the plant The main objective of this work was to identify fungal genes involved in the protective capacity of these strains and associated to the elicitation of pla…

Savoirs, représentations et comportements des réunionnais en matière de santé et d'environnement 18 mois après l'épidémie de chikungunya

2009

The outbreak of Chikungunya in Reunion in 2005/2006 surprised by its intensity and by the appearance of serious forms. It has left health professionals and relatively poor populations facing the lack of appropriate treatment. From the example of Chikungunya, the general objective of our multidisciplinary research was to study how two types of factors interact in the management of a vector-based disease: those related to representations and knowledge of the disease, and those related to to the perception of the environment. In this poster, we present the results of a questionnaire survey conducted in November 2007 among the inhabitants of a district of Ravine des Cabris (Commune of St Pierre…
