Evaluation of the healing of precoated vascular dacron prostheses.

Knitted and woven Dacron grafts commercially coated with bovine collagen, gelatin and human albumin were implanted end-to-side between the infrarenal aorta and the bifurcation in 35 growing pigs. Grafts were explanted after 4, 8 and 12 weeks and compared to 6 uncoated knitted prostheses preclotted with blood that served as a control. Uncoated grafts rapidly developed a firmly attached neointima lined with endothelium. Compared with coated grafts the thrombus-free area of uncoated grafts was significantly larger (P less than 0.05). Summary On the Sensory Nerve-Endings in the Porcine Clitoris Neural receptors of the porcine clitoris were examined using light and electron microscopy. Perfusion with ink allowed study of the unique vascular arrangement associated with the genital corpuscles. Sensory nerve-endings were generally rounded and formed a morphologically and structurally characteristic unit. They were composed of a network of primarily non-myelinated nerve fibers and flat cells. A Sliding Window-Based Method to Detect Selective Constraints in Protein-Coding Genes and Its Application to RNA Viruses

Here we present a new sliding window-based method specially designed to detect selective constraints in specific regions of a multiple protein-coding sequence alignment. In contrast to previous window-based procedures, our method is based on a nonarbitrary statistical approach to find the appropriate codon-window size to test deviations of synonymous (d(S)) and nonsynonymous (d(N)) nucleotide substitutions from the expectation. The probabilities of d(N) and d(S) are obtained from simulated data and used to detect significant deviations of d(N) and d(S) in a specific window region of the real sequence alignment. Genetic variability and evolutionary analysis of parietaria mottle virus: role of selection and genetic exchange

[EN] The genetic variability and evolution of parietaria mottle virus (PMoV) of the genus Ilarvirus was studied by analyzing nucleotide sequences of 2b and CP genes from isolates collected in different countries. Phylogenetic analysis showed that PMoV isolates clustered in different clades: one (clade I) composed of only Italian isolates and three clades (clades II-IV) including the Spanish isolates. The Greek isolate GrT-1 used in this study was in clade IV for the CP phylogenetic tree whereas it formed a separate branch in the 2b phylogenetic tree. Electrical properties of Au/CdZnTe/Au detectors grown by the boron oxide encapsulated Vertical Bridgman technique

Abstract In this work we report on the results of electrical characterization of new CdZnTe detectors grown by the Boron oxide encapsulated Vertical Bridgman technique (B-VB), currently produced at IMEM-CNR (Parma, Italy). The detectors, with gold electroless contacts, have different thicknesses (1 and 2.5 mm) and the same electrode layout, characterized by a central anode surrounded by a guard-ring electrode. Synthesis and assembly of virus-like particles of human papillomaviruses type 6 and type 16 in fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe.

AbstractWe have synthesized capsid proteins of human papillomavirus types 6 (HPV 6) and 16 (HPV 16) in fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe and produced virus-like particles (VLP). The capsid proteins were localized in the nucleus by indirect immunofluorescence and cell fractionation analyses. The VLP were produced in both yeast clones synthesizing L1 alone and L1/L2 and purified by sulfato-cellulofine chromatography. Electron microscopic examination showed that these VLP were similar in structure to native HPV particles. Extranodal extension of nodal metastases is a poor prognostic moderator in non-small cell lung cancer: a meta-analysis

Polymer/Perovskite Amplifying Waveguides for Active Hybrid Silicon Photonics

The emission properties of hybrid halide perovskites are exploited to implement a stable and very low power operation waveguide optical amplifier integrated in a silicon platform. By optimizing its design with a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) encapsulation, this novel photonic device presents a net gain of around 10 dB cm−1 and 3–4 nm linewidth with an energy threshold as low as 2 nJ pulse−1 and exhibiting no degradation after one year. Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) are ideal sources for chemical and biological optical sensors, due to their simplicity, low cost (disposable applications) and possibility to be integrated on chip and fabricated in the form of large 2D arrays (microarray fluorescence) even on flexible plastic substrates. OLEDs with lifetimes of a few hundreds of hours at initial luminance values in the range (500÷1000) cd/m 2 are suitable for the above applications, but these lifetimes can be achieved only by a proper encapsulation.
