Solvent features of cluster single-wall C, BC2N and BN nanotubes, cones and horns

2013

Graphical abstractDisplay Omitted Highlights? It is discussed single-wall carbon, BC2N and BN nanocones in organic solvents in cluster form. ? Theory is developed based on a cluster bundlet model describing distribution function by size. ? There is explanation in which (BC2N/BN-)SWNC free energy is combined from two components. ? Bundlet model enables describing the distribution function of (BC2N/BN-)SWNC clusters by size. ? From purely geometrical differences, bundlet and droplet models predict different behaviours. It is discussed the existence of single-wall carbon nanocones (SWNCs), especially nanohorns (SWNHs), and BC2N/boron nitride (BN) analogues in organic solvents in cluster form; …

Hybrid catalysts for CO 2 conversion into cyclic carbonates

2019

The conversion of carbon dioxide into valuable chemicals such as cyclic carbonates is an appealing topic for the scientific community due to the possibility of valorizing waste into an inexpensive, available, nontoxic, and renewable carbon feedstock. In this regard, last-generation heterogeneous catalysts are of great interest owing to their high catalytic activity, robustness, and easy recovery and recycling. In the present review, recent advances on CO 2 cycloaddition to epoxide mediated by hybrid catalysts through organometallic or organo-catalytic species supported onto silica-, nanocarbon-, and metal-organic framework (MOF)-based heterogeneous materials, are highlighted and discussed.

Elastic properties of UV irradiated polyethylene-octene copolymer composites with functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes

2016

ABSTRACTPolyethylene-octene copolymer (E38) is melt compounded with carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNT-COOH) in the presence of maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PEgMA). The effects of CNT-COOH in the amount of 1–10 wt. % on the mechanical properties of E38 based composite are investigated. It is revealed that addition of CNT-COOH considerably increases the stiffness and mechanical strength of the E38 based composites. The effect of UV irradiation on the structure as well as on the mechanical properties of E38/PEgMA/CNT-COOH composites is also investigated. Results of the investigation testify that UV resistance of the E38 based composites increases by increasing the content of CNT-COO…

Novel Carbon Nanotubes Rolled from 6,6,12-Graphyne: Double Dirac Points in 1D Material

2017

Two kinds of novel carbon nanotubes, namely, (N, 0) and (0, N) 6,6,12-graphyne nanotubes (6,6,12-GNTs), are constructed by rolling up the rectangular 6,6,12-graphyne sheets along two different sides into cylinders. The mechanical and electronic properties of 6,6,12-GNTs with varied N from 3 to 20 are investigated by using density functional theory. Unlike the single-wall carbon nanotubes, the Young’s moduli of 6,6,12-GNTs do not remain constant in the case of (N, 0), but the (0, N) tubes possess almost the same one around 0.32 TPa. The band structures and density of states are also exhibited in this work. When the tube sizes N are bigger than four, Dirac points appear at Fermi level in the …

Understanding the microscopic processes that govern the charge-induced deformation of carbon nanotubes

2009

While carbon nanotubes have technological potential as actuators, the underlying actuation mechanisms remain poorly understood. We calculate charge-induced stresses and strains for electrochemical actuation of carbon nanotubes with different chiralities and defects, using density-functional theory and various tight-binding models. For a given deformation mode the concept of bonding and antibonding orbitals can be redefined depending on the sign of a differential band-structure stress. We use this theoretical framework to analyze orbital contributions to the actuation. These show charge asymmetric behavior which is due to next-nearest-neighbor hopping while Coulombic contributions account fo…

Multiwall carbon-nanotube interconnects: radial effects on physical models and resistance calculations for various metal substrates

2010

Based on a model with singular attractive potential of equidistant conductive cylinders, we illustrate an approach to calculate the electron spectrum of metallic multiwall carbon nanotubes (MW CNT) with an arbitrary number of coaxial layers. We compute the number of electrically active channels, N ch , in the ideal case when all MW CNT shells are contacted to the electrodes, starting from the one-electron spectrum. The dependence of N ch on the temperature and on both the innermost and outermost shells radii allows us to discuss the potential performances of MW CNT interconnects, affecting the power dissipation of integrated circuits. Our description improves over the isolated shells model,…

Mixed finite element-tight-binding electromechanical analysis of carbon nanotubes

2004

Electrical transport properties of carbon nanotubes can be dramatically changed by mechanical deformations that alter tube shape and the corresponding positions of the atoms comprising the tube wall. In principle, detailed atomic/electronic calculations can provide both the deformed configuration and the resulting electrical transport behavior of the tube. Here we simplify the process by refining a previously-developed nonlinear structural mechanics finite-element-based procedure for modeling mechanical behavior of carbon nanotubes to account explicitly for tube chirality. A quadrilateral element overlay procedure provides an isotropic finite element model of hexagonal cells within a graphe…

Carbon nanotubes under electron irradiation: Stability of the tubes and their action as pipes for atom transport

2005

The production and migration of carbon interstitials in carbon nanotubes under electron irradiation is studied experimentally and theoretically. It is shown that the threshold for displacing carbon atoms and the defect production rate strongly depend on the diameter of the nanotubes. Multiwalled nanotubes shrink by a loss of atoms and by diffusion of interstitials through the inner hollow in the axial direction. Thus, experimental evidence is given that nanotubes can act as nanoscale pipes for the transport of atoms.

A Meshless Approach for Electromagnetic Simulation of Metallic Carbon Nanotubes

2009

In this paper, a study on the electromagnetic behaviour of a single wall carbon nanotube model is described. The electrons available for conduction are treated as a thin cylindrical layer fluid and their motion is described by means of classical hydrodynamics equations in linearized form. These equations are solved in time domain using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method. The method suitably handled runs on GRID environment.
