Cluster nature of the solvent features of single-wall carbon nanohorns

2009

The existence of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in organic solvents, in the form of clusters, is discussed. A theory is developed based on a bundlet model for clusters, describing the distribution function of clusters by size. The phenomena have a unified explanation in the bundlet model of clusters, in accordance with which the free energy of an SWNT, involved in a cluster, is combined from two components: a volume one, proportional to the number of molecules n in a cluster, and a surface one proportional to n1/2. The bundlet model for clusters enables describing the distribution function of SWNT clusters by size. The droplet model is formally analogous to the one for fullerene clust…

Femtosecond four-wave-mixing spectroscopy of suspended individual semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes.

2010

Femtosecond four-wave-mixing (FWM) experiments of individual suspended semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are presented. The chiral indices of the tubes were determined by electron diffraction as (28,14) and (24,14) having diameters of 2.90 and 2.61 nm, respectively. The diameter and semiconducting character of the tubes were additionally confirmed by resonance Raman measurements. The FWM signal showed electronic response from the SWCNTs. The results demonstrate that ultrafast dynamics of individual SWCNTs can be studied by FWM spectroscopies.

Epoxy composites filled with high surface area-carbon fillers

2013

Citation: J. Appl. Phys. 114, 164304 (2013); doi: 10.1063/1.4826529 (Received 24 July 2013; accepted 6 October 2013; published online 22 October 2013) A comprehensive analysis of electrical, electromagnetic (EM), mechanical, and thermal properties of epoxy resin composites filled with 0.25–2.0 wt. % of carbon additives characterized by high surface area, both nano-sized, like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon black (CBH), and micro-sized exfoliated graphite (EG), was performed. We found that the physical properties of both CNTs- and CBH-based epoxy resin composites increased all together with filler content and even more clearly for CBH than for CNTs. In the case of EG-based composites, go…

Recent applications of carbonaceous nanosorbents for the analysis of mycotoxins in food by liquid chromatography: a short review

2019

Carbonaceous nanomaterials (multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), graphene, and graphene oxide (GO)) have attracted attention over the last decade as adsorbents suitable for the analysis of organic and inorganic pollutants. In the present paper we review methods of mycotoxin analysis that involve sample extraction with carbonaceous nanosorbents, reported from 2011 onwards. Recent studies have highlighted the advantages of magnetically modified MWCNTs and GO in mycotoxin analysis, which may enable sample isolation through magnetic separation, reduce the interaction of nanoparticles, and enhance the recovery of analytes. The papers covered in this review point to promising applications of …

Simulation of electromagnetic properties in carbon nanotubes and graphene-based nanostructures

2012

As carbon nanotubes (CNT) and graphene nanostructures (GNR) constitute the basis of high-speed nanoelectronics and nanosensors, we examine the fundamental properties of var- ious CNT-metal (Me), GNR-Me, and CNT-graphene interconnects. The cluster approach based on the multiple scattering theory as well as effective medium approximation were used to model the dispersion law, electronic density of states (DOS), and conductivity, etc. Multiple scattering problems were solved for nanostructures with radial (quantum dots) and axial (nanowires, nano- tubes) symmetry. Interconnect capacitances and impedances have been evaluated in the GHz and THz regimes. Parametrical numerical simulations of cond…

Nonlinear photo-oxidation of graphene and carbon nanotubes probed by four wave mixing imaging and spectroscopy (Presentation Recording)

2015

Graphene has high potential for becoming the next generation material for electronics, photonics and optoelectronics. However, spatially controlled modification of graphene is required for applications. Here, we report patterning and controlled tuning of electrical and optical properties of graphene by laser induced non-linear oxidation. We use four wave mixing (FWM) as a key method for imaging graphene and graphene oxide patterns with high sensitivity. FWM produces strong signal in monolayer graphene and the signal is highly sensitive to oxidation providing good contrast between patterned and non-patterned areas. We have also performed photo-oxidation and FWM imaging for air suspended carb…

DFT studies of OH-functionalized open-ended zigzag, armchair, and chiral single wall carbon nanotubes

2011

The functionalization of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by attaching various molecules or molecular groups to the exterior walls or tips has attracted much attention, because it offers a possible way to modify their electronic, chemical, optical and mechanical properties. In this contribution the results of DFT studies of pristine and OH-modified open-ended zigzag (9,0), armchair (5,5) and chiral (8,2) nanotubes are reported. The calculations have been performed for partially and fully functionalized at one end model SWCNTs with dangling bonds saturated with hydrogen atoms and a nonadditive dependence of attachment energy on the number of substituents was observed.

From Behavior of Water on Hydrophobic Graphene Surfaces to Ultra-Confinement of Water in Carbon Nanotubes

2021

In recent years and with the achievement of nanotechnologies, the development of experiments based on carbon nanotubes has allowed to increase the ionic permeability and/or selectivity in nanodevices. However, this new technology opens the way to many questionable observations, to which theoretical work can answer using several approximations. One of them concerns the appearance of a negative charge on the carbon surface, when the latter is apparently neutral. Using first-principles density functional theory combined with molecular dynamics, we develop here several simulations on different systems in order to understand the reactivity of the carbon surface in low or ultra-high confinement. …

Synthesis highly active platinum tri-metallic electrocatalysts using "one-step" organometallic chemical vapour deposition technique for methanol oxid…

2012

A simple solvent free method for the synthesis of tri-metallic platinum electrocatalysts on carbon nanotubes is presented. By investigating the platinum alloy electrocatalysts, it was showed that the additional metals of platinum alloys could reduce the metal particle sizes and produce larger chemical-active surface area, as well as the higher methanol oxidation activity of the catalysts. The organometallic chemical vapour deposition method was successfully applied to produce multiple samples of PtRuFe, PtRuCu and PtRuV. The electrocatalysts were characterized by ICP, XRD, HRTEM and the catalytic activity was determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV).
