Imaging appearance of treated hepatocellular carcinoma

2013

Surgical resection and imaging guided treatments play a crucial role in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Although the primary end point of treatment of HCC is survival, radiological response could be a surrogate end point of survival, and has a key role in HCC decision-making process. However, radiological assessment of HCC treatment efficacy is often controversial. There are few doubts on the evaluation of surgical resection; in fact, all known tumor sites should be removed. However, an unenhancing partial linear peripheral halo, in most cases, surrounding a fluid collection reducing in size during follow-up is demonstrated in successfully resected tumor with bipolar radio…

Needle track seeding following percutaneous procedures for hepatocellular carcinoma.

2009

Neoplastic seeding may arise after diagnostic or therapeutic percutaneous procedures for hepatocellular carcinoma. The true incidence of seeding with hepatocellular carcinoma is difficult to assess precisely, but a significant risk of seeding exists and is greater when performing diagnostic biopsy as compared to therapeutic percutaneous procedures [radiofrequency ablation, radiofrequency ablation (RFA); percutaneous ethanol injection, Percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI)]. Whenever liver transplantation is feasible, diagnostic needle biopsies should be avoided, but RFA and PEI are often needed as “bridge” treatments. The role of adjuvant treatments in reducing the incidence of seeding follo…

Transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis presenting as a renal abscess.

2002

We report on a 76-year-old woman who was diagnosed with a primary renal abscess of the left kidney. After percutaneous drainage, no clinical improvement was observed. Surgical exploration and nephrectomy were performed. The histologic evaluation revealed an unsuspected transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis, which had been misinterpreted as a primary renal abscess. Malignancy must be considered as an underlying cause for the formation of a renal abscess, especially if no other predisposing factors such as diabetes mellitus or urinary stones are present.

Effect of Prognostic Risk Classification on Temsirolimus Efficacy and Safety Outcomes in Patients with Relapsed/Refractory Mantle Cell Lymphoma

2011

Abstract Abstract 2708 Background: The simplified Mantle Cell Lymphoma International Prognostic Index (MIPI) has been shown to be a good predictor of patient survival (Blood 2008;111:558–65; Blood 2010;115:1530–1533). This post hoc study analyzed data from a randomized, phase III clinical trial investigating temsirolimus (TEM) in relapsed/refractory mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) in which TEM 175/75 (175 mg for first 3 weeks then 75 mg weekly) demonstrated significantly longer progression-free survival (PFS) vs investigator's choice of therapy (INV; 4.8 vs 1.9 months, respectively; hazard ratio [HR]=0.44; P=.0009; J Clin Oncol 2009;27:3822–9). Patients receiving TEM 175/25 (175 mg for first 3 w…

Long-term outcome of antiandrogen monotherapy in advanced prostate carcinoma: 12-year results of a phase II study

2003

OBJECTIVE To present the long-term outcome of patients with locally advanced or metastatic prostate carcinoma treated by first-line antiandrogen monotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS From 1983 to 1990, 41 patients with advanced prostate carcinoma were treated with flutamide monotherapy until progression or the appearance of toxicity. Twenty-five patients (61%) had T3-T4N0M0 and 16 (39%) T2–4N0–3M1 prostate carcinoma. Consensus criteria were adopted to evaluate the response. Plasma testosterone and sexual function were recorded for the first 3 years. RESULTS Flutamide was administered for up to 147 months; seven patients (17%) interrupted the treatment because of toxicity. There was an objective…

Influence of Lymphangio (L), Vascular (V), and Perineural (Pn) Invasion on Recurrence and Survival of Resected Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma

2021

(1) Background: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is a rare malignancy. Besides tumor, nodal, and metastatic status, the UICC TNM classification describes further parameters such as lymphangio- (L0/L1), vascular (V0/V1/V2), and perineural invasion (Pn0/Pn1). The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of these parameters on recurrence and survival. (2) Methods: All surgical explorations for patients with ICC between January 2008 and June 2018 were collected and further analyzed in our institutional database. Statistical analyses focused on perineural, lymphangio-, and vascular invasion examined histologically and their influence on tumor recurrence and survival. (3) Results: Of 2…

Cytoreductive surgery and mitomycin C hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy with CO2 recirculation (HIPEC-CO2) for colorectal cancer peritoneal m…

2021

Peritoneal dissemination from colorectal cancer (CRC) has long been associated with unfavorable prognosis. However, in the last decades, the combination of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) was able to obtain up to 30% 5-year survival rate in selected centers. Despite the wide diffusion of CRS and HIPEC, until now, there are no clear recommendations on the drug of choice for HIPEC nor its technique, and safety and efficacy data of HIPEC regimens and techniques are lacking. We performed a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database of 26 CRS and mitomycin C HIPEC with CO2 recirculation (HIPEC-CO2) for CRC peritoneal metastasis…

Semi-automated non-invasive diagnostics method for melanoma differentiation from nevi and pigmented basal cell carcinomas

2017

The incidence of skin cancer is still increasing mostly in in industrialized countries with light- skinned people. Late tumour detection is the main reason of the high mortality associated with skin cancer. The accessibility of early diagnostics of skin cancer in Latvia is limited by several factors, such as high cost of dermatology services, long queues on state funded oncologist examinations, as well as inaccessibility of oncologists in the countryside regions - this is an actual clinical problem. The new strategies and guidelines for skin cancer early detection and post-surgical follow-up intend to realize the full body examination (FBE) by primary care physicians (general practitioners,…

Rectal bleeding and prolapse… not always benign diseases rather anal cancer. The importance of a correct decision making since primary care

2016

Rectal bleeding is very common in general population with a prevalence of 10-20 %. Primary care physicians have to stratify patients basing on urgency and on the colo-rectal cancer risk and to conduct a decision making for the correct management. We report a case of a 61-years-old woman, complaining rectal bleeding and an anal mass attended to their family doctor who does a visit but without a digital rectal examination and diagnosed a hemorrhoidal prolapse suggesting medical therapy. For the persistence of symptoms she comes to our service from emergency attention. Inspection and digital rectal examination revealed an anal mass. CT scan was performed showing a large anal mass involving hal…

The role of PET radiomic features in prostate cancer: a systematic review

2021

Aim: This systematic review aims to present the available evidence on the use of radiomic features (RFs) extracted from PET imaging in patients with prostate cancer (PCa). Materials and methods: A comprehensive literature search of studies on the utility of PET-derived RFs in patients with PCa was performed in the PubMed/MEDLINE database through February 24th, 2021 using the following search string: [“positron-emission tomography” (MeSh terms) OR “positron emission tomography computed tomography” (MeSh terms) OR “positron-emission tomography” (all fields) OR “positron emission tomography computed tomography” (all fields) OR “PET” (all fields)] AND [“radiomics” (all fields) OR “radiomic” (al…
