Calcified carotid artery atheromas on panoramic radiographs of head and neck cancer patients before and after radiotherapy

2017

Background The aims of this study were to verify if head and neck radiotherapy (RT) is able to induce calcified carotid artery atheroma (CCAA) in a large head and neck cancer (HNC) population and also to compare the socio-demographic and clinical findings of patients with and without CCAA detected on panoramic radiographs. Material and Methods Panoramic radiographs taken before and after head and neck radiotherapy (RT) of 180 HNC patients were selected and analyzed in order to identify the presence of CCAA. In addition, CCAA presence or absence on panoramic radiographs were compared and correlated with clinicopathological findings. Results A high overall prevalence of CCAA was found on pano…

Haemorheological parameters in young patients with acute myocardial infarction

2008

The role played by hemorheological alterations on acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in young patients remains a question of debate. We have carried out a case-control study of 84 AMI patients aged45 years and 135 sex and age matched controls, in which blood viscosity (BV), plasma viscosity (PV), erythrocyte aggregation (EA) performed with the Myrenne (EA0, EA1) and the Sefam aggregometer (Ta, AI10, gammaD), erythrocyte deformability (ED) along with fibrinogen (Fbg), C-reactive protein (CRP) and plasmatic lipids i.e. total cholesterol (T-Chol) and triglycerides (TG) were determined. AMI patients showed higher, Fbg, TG, EA0, EA1, IA10, gammaD and lower Ta than controls (p=0.029, p0.001, p=0.0…

Realignment of myocardial first-pass MR perfusion images using an automatic detection of the heart-lung interface

2004

International audience; Abstract: Magnetic resonance first-pass imaging of a bolus of contrast agent is well adapted to distinguish normal and hypoperfused areas of the myocardium. In most cases, the signal intensity-time curves in user defined regions of interest (ROI) are studied. As image acquisition is ECG-gated, the images are acquired at the same moment in the cardiac cycle, and the basic shape of the heart is similar from one view to the next. However, superficial respiratory motion can displace the heart in the short-axis plane. The aim of this study is to correct for the respiratory motion of the heart by performing an automatic realignment of the myocardial ROI based on a method t…

Kardiale MRT : Änderungen der normalisierten myokardialen Gadolinium-Anreicherung über die Zeit nach Kontrastmittelinjektion in Patienten mit akuter …

2011

PURPOSE An increased normalized gadolinium accumulation (NGA) in the myocardium during early washout has been used for the diagnosis of acute myocarditis (AM). Due to the fact that the pharmacokinetics of contrast agents are complex, time-related changes in NGA after contrast injection are likely. Because knowledge about time-related changes of NGA may improve the diagnostic accuracy of MR, our study aimed to estimate the time course of NGA after contrast injection in patients as well as in healthy volunteers. MATERIALS AND METHODS An ECG-triggered inversion recovery SSFP sequence with incrementally increasing inversion times was repetitively acquired over the 15 minutes after injection of …

Dynamic contrast-enhanced myocardial perfusion imaging using saturation-prepared TrueFISP.

2002

Purpose To develop and test a saturation-recovery TrueFISP (SR-TrueFISP) pulse sequence for first-pass myocardial perfusion imaging. Materials and Methods First-pass magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of Gd-DTPA (2 mL) kinetics in the heart was performed using an SR-TrueFISP pulse sequence (TR/TE/α = 2.6 msec/1.4 msec/55°) with saturation preparation TD = 30 msec before the TrueFISP readout. Measurements were also performed with a conventional saturation-recovery TurboFLASH (SRTF) pulse sequence for comparison. Results SR-TrueFISP images were of excellent quality and demonstrated contrast agent wash-in more clearly than SRTF images. The signal increase in myocardium was higher in SR-TrueFISP …

Association between C1019T polymorphism of connexin37 and acute myocardial infarction: a study in patients from Sicily

2003

Abstract During atherogenesis, a critical role is played by intercellular communication via gap junctions, cell membrane channels linking the cytoplasmic compartments of adjacent cells. The component protein subunits of these channels, called connexin (Cx), belong to a multigene family. Cx37 is involved in growth, regeneration after injury and ageing of the endothelial cells, suggesting its role in atherosclerosis. The C1019 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of Cx37 gene was associated with thickening of the carotid intima in Swedish men and was also associated with coronary artery disease in a Taiwanese population. On the other hand, in two more recent studies performed in male Japanese…

Cardiomyopathy due to PRDM16 mutation: First description of a fetal presentation, with possible modifier genes

2020

PRDM16 (positive regulatory domain 16) is localized in the critical region for cardiomyopathy in patients with deletions of chromosome 1p36, as defined by Gajecka et al., American Journal of Medical Genetics, 2010, 152A, 3074-3083, and encodes a zinc finger transcription factor. We present the first fetal case of left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC) with a PRDM16 variant. The third-trimester obstetric ultrasound revealed a hydropic fetus with hydramnios and expanded hypokinetic heart. After termination of pregnancy, foetopathology showed a eutrophic fetus with isolated cardiomegaly. Endocardial fibroelastosis was associated with non-compaction of the myocardium of the left ventricle. Exom…

Role of TLR4 polymorphisms in inflammatory responses: implications for unsuccessful aging.

2007

The total burden of infection at various sites may affect the progression of atherosclerosis and Alzheimer's disease (AD), the risk being modulated by host genotype. The role of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptor TLR4 is paradigmatic. It initiates the innate immune response against gram-negative bacteria, and TLR4 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), such as +896A/G, known to attenuate receptor signaling, have been described. This SNP shows a significantly lower frequency in patients affected by myocardial infarction or AD. Thus, people genetically predisposed to developing lower inflammatory activity seem to have less chance of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) or AD. In the presen…

Inflammation, Longevity, and Cardiovascular Diseases: Role of Polymorphisms of TLR4

2006

The total burden of infection at various sites may affect the progression of atherosclerosis, the risk being modulated by host genotype. The role of lipopolysaccaride receptor TLR4 is paradigmatic. It initiates the innate immune response against gram-negative bacteria; and TLR4 polymorphisms, as ASP299GLY, suggested to attenuate receptor signaling, have been described. We demonstrated that TLR4 ASP299GLY polymorphism shows a significantly lower frequency in patients affected by myocardial infarction compared to controls, whereas centenarians show a higher frequency. Thus, people genetically predisposed to developing weak inflammatory activity, seem to have fewer chances of developing cardio…

Haplotypes of the caspase-1 gene, plasma caspase-1 levels, and cardiovascular risk.

2006

Caspase-1 processes the interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-18 inactive precursors to the biologically active cytokines that are known to have proatherogenic effects. The present study investigated the genetic variability of the CASP1 gene and plasma levels of caspase-1 in relation to cardiovascular risk. In Europeans, 3 tag SNPs captured 4 common haplotypes of the CASP1 gene. Among these, the A in6 allele of the G+7/in6A polymorphism was less frequent in 246 cases with myocardial infarction and a parental history of disease than in 253 controls free of familial history of disease (0.13±0.02 versus 0.20±0.02; P =0.005). However, in a larger case/control study (n=1774), these effects are borderline …
