On melting of two-dimensional monolayer films

The melting of two-dimensional films formed on the (100) fcc crystal is studied by Monte Carlo simulation. The results obtained suggest that in systems with only weakly corrugated surface potential, exhibiting the hexagonal close packed solid structure, the melting transition is followed by the lsing-like transition as predicted by the theory of Nelson and Halperin. In the case of highly corrugated surface potential, the film forms registered structure which disorders gradually as the temperature is raised.
EXAFS study of the local structure of crystalline and nanocrystalline Y2O3using evolutionary algorithm method

Temperature-dependent local structure and lattice dynamics of yttria (Y2O3) were studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Novel method, which combines the reverse Monte Carlo and evolutionary algorithm techniques, was applied for the analysis of extended X-ray absorption fine structure at the Y K-edge. This approach allowed us to reconstruct 3D atomic structure models of crystalline and nanocrystalline Y2O3.

Measurement of dijet production with a veto on additional central jet activity in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV using the ATLAS detector

A measurement of jet activity in the rapidity interval bounded by a dijet system is presented. Events are vetoed if a jet with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV is found between the two boundary jets. The fraction of dijet events that survive the jet veto is presented for boundary jets that are separated by up to six units of rapidity and with mean transverse momentum 50 < p¯T < 500 GeV. The mean multiplicity of jets above the veto scale in the rapidity interval bounded by the dijet system is also presented as an alternative method for quantifying perturbative QCD emission. The paper deals with the metrological characterization of a digital wattmeter developed by using a personal computer, a shunt, two commercial data acquisition boards and commercial software. The uncertainty of the active power measurements is assessed individually characterizing the voltage channel, the current channel and the phase displacement measurement between the two channels. An important aspect of molecular fluids is the relation between orientation and translation parts of the two-particle correlations. Especially the detailed knowledge of the influence of orientation correlations is needed to explain and calculate in detail the occurrence of a nematic phase. The simplest model system which shows both orientation and translation correlations is a system of hard ellipsoids. We investigate an isotropic fluid formed of hard ellipsoids with Percus-Yevick theory. Solving the Percus-Yevick equations self-consistently in the high density regime gives a clear criterion for a nematic instability.
