“Let there be light”. Andrew Carnegie e le biblioteche pubbliche
2021
The impact of cultural patronage for local development has so far not been adequately emphasized in comparative studies on public library history. Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919), the famous entrepreneur of Scottish origins who, as a young man, emigrated to the United States (Pennsylvania), where the fortunes of his steel industry quickly made him an extremely wealthy man, can rightly be regarded as the most extraordinary patron of public libraries in the English-speaking countries between the 19th and 20th centuries. Later, mindful of the great value of free libraries for his self-training in his youth, Carnegie devoted several million dollars for the establishment of over 2,500 new public lib…
Seroprevalence of Norovirus Genogroup IV Antibodies among Humans, Italy, 2010–2011
2014
Antibodies specific to genogroup IV identified in human specimens suggest zoonotic exposure.
On "Explicandum" versus "Explicatum"
2011
The aim of this paper is twofold. First of all I want to present some old ideas revisited in the light of some of the many interesting new developments occurred in the course of these last ten years in the field of the foundations of fuzziness. Secondly I desire to present a tentative general framework in which it is possible to compare different attitudes and different approaches to the clarification of the conceptual problems arising from fuzziness and soft computing. In the paper, then, I shall use some names as banners to indicate a (crucial) problem (i.e., Carnap’s problem, von Neumann’s problem, Galileian science, Aristotelian science and so on). As it will be clear by reading the pap…
Where Does Nε-Trimethyllysine for the Carnitine Biosynthesis in Mammals Come from?
2014
N(ε)-trimethyllysine (TML) is a non-protein amino acid which takes part in the biosynthesis of carnitine. In mammals, the breakdown of endogenous proteins containing TML residues is recognized as starting point for the carnitine biosynthesis. Here, we document that one of the main sources of TML could be the vegetables which represent an important part of daily alimentation for most mammals. A HPLC-ESI-MS/MS method, which we previously developed for the analysis of N(G)-methylarginines, was utilized to quantitate TML in numerous vegetables. We report that TML, believed to be rather rare in plants as free amino acid, is, instead, ubiquitous in them and at not negligible levels. The occurrenc…
Extremal polynomials in stratified groups
2018
We introduce a family of extremal polynomials associated with the prolongation of a stratified nilpotent Lie algebra. These polynomials are related to a new algebraic characterization of abnormal subriemannian geodesics in stratified nilpotent Lie groups. They satisfy a set of remarkable structure relations that are used to integrate the adjoint equations.
Two Methods for Highlighting the Influence of Sugars Type on Fermentation Processes Produced by Staphylococcus Carnosus and Lactobacillus Curvatus
2011
Purpose of this paper is to establish the influence of different types of sugars on fermentation processes found in the meat industry. In the analysis used a mixture of bacteria (Lactobacillus curvatus and Staphylococcus carnosus ), and the types of sugars were used lactose, lactulose, sucrose and two types of glucose syrup. To highlight the speed with which the fermentation process takes place, the variation in pH for the environment and the amount of energy released during biotechnological processes was measured.
Sé, anima, corpo: Bruno Snell settant'anni dopo
2018
Influence of ventral tegmental area (A10 region) on flight behaviour elicited by hypothalamic stimulation in the cat.
1993
The influence of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) (dopaminergic A10 group neurons) on flight behaviour, induced by hypothalamic stimulation, was studied in the cat. Co-stimulation of hypothalamus and VTA (ipsi- or contralateral) induced an increase of the flight latency. Slow-motion analysis of flight behaviour showed that this increase was due to the augmentation of the fixation latency (FL) whereas the upright latency (UL) was not modified. Sulpiride injection (50 mg/kg i.p.) provoked the disappearance of VTA effect without affecting the basal behavioural sequence. The results show that DA A10 group neurons increase the attentive component of the flight reaction, suggesting a possible inf…
