SILENT EMBOLIC INFARCTS ON COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY BRAIN SCANS AND RISK OF IPSILATERAL HEMISPHERIC EVENTS IN PATIENTS WITH ASYMPTOMATIC INTERNAL CAROTID …

2009

OBJECTIVES: This study tested the hypothesis that silent embolic infarcts on computed tomography (CT) brain scans can predict ipsilateral neurologic hemispheric events and stroke in patients with asymptomatic internal carotid artery stenosis. METHODS: In a prospective multicenter natural history study, 821 patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis graded with duplex scanning who had CT brain scans were monitored every 6 months for a maximum of 8 years. Duplex scans were reported centrally, and stenosis was expressed as a percentage in relation to the normal distal internal carotid criteria used by the North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trialists. CT brain scans were reporte…

FOKI AND BSMI VITAMIN D RECEPTOR GENE POLYMORPHISMS, ARE THEY ASSOCIATED WITH INTIMA MEDIA THICKNESS IN ESSENTIAL HYPERTENSIVE INDIVIDUALS

2015

Objective: Analyzing 25hydroxyvitaminD (25[OH]D) serum levels and common carotid intimamedia thickness (IMT) relationship, and evaluating the association of FokI and BsmI vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms with IMT in essential hypertensive patients were our study aims. Design and method: We enrolled seventyone essential hypertensive patients, 18–75 years old. Patients underwent clinical blood pressure (BP) measurement, 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, routine blood test, 25[OH]D assay and common carotid IMT evaluation. FokI and BsmIVDRpolymorphisms were analyzed by polymerase chain reactionrestriction fragment length polymorphism (PCRRFLP).

UTILITÀ DI UN BASSO CUT-OFF DI INDICE DI RESISTENZA INTRARENALE NEL PREDIRE ALTERAZIONI VASCOLARI SISTEMICHE PRECOCI IN SOGGETTI CON IPERTENSIONE ART…

2014

Editorial: Hypoxia and Cardiorespiratory Control

2021

To maintain adequate oxygen levels in the body, which is essential for a healthy life, the respiratory and cardiovascular systems play vitally important roles. When the oxygen content is insufficient, i.e., when hypoxia is loaded, respiratory and cardiovascular systems respond to restore, compensate, or adapt to hypoxia, e.g., by increasing ventilation and blood flow to maintain oxygen transport to vital organs. Traditionally, it has been thought that hypoxia is detected solely by carotid and aortic bodies, i.e., by peripheral chemoreceptors, and information from the peripheral chemoreceptors is transmitted to respiratory and cardiovascular centers in the brainstem whose respiratory and car…

Atypical posterior circulation strokes: a case-based review of rare anatomical variations involved

2021

The circle of Willis is a very important vascular mechanism of protecting against cerebral ischemia, especially when circulation within the main arteries irrigating the brain is somehow impeded. As result of congenital malformation arising early in embryonic development, the fetal-type posterior circle of Willis remains as such during the rest of one's life. Consequently, the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) becomes a branch of the internal carotid artery (ICA), rather than of the basilar artery (BA). Furthermore, the rest of collateral circulation, between the anterior and the posterior regions of the brain, is also negatively affected (e.g., leptomeningeal vessels). The anatomical variant …

Effect of Oral Semaglutide on Cardiovascular Parameters and Their Mechanisms in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: Rationale and Design of the Semaglutid…

2022

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) management has reached a point where not only optimal glycaemic control is necessary, but also additional interventions with proven cardiovascular risk reduction benefit. Subcutaneous semaglutide has been shown to provide cardiovascular protection, but its use may be limited by its injection formulation. To overcome this limitation, an oral semaglutide tablet has been developed, which could potentially be of the same value as its injection counterpart, but in a much wider group of patients with T2D, thereby allowing for broader cardiovascular risk reduction in this vulnerable patient population.A total of 100 consecutive patients with T2D and a disease duration of up t…

Liraglutide Improved Cardiometabolic Parameters More in Obese than in Non-obese Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Real-World 18-Month Prospective Stud…

2022

Introduction The glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist (GLP1-RA) liraglutide is currently approved for the treatment of both obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2DM). We investigated whether the effect of this agent on cardiometabolic parameters in subjects with T2DM varied in relation to the concomitant presence of obesity. Methods One hundred thirty-five subjects (78 men and 57 women; age: 62 +/- 10 years) naive to incretin-based therapies were treated with low-dose liraglutide (1.2 mg/day) as an add-on to metformin for 18 months. Patients were divided into two subgroups based on their body-mass index (BMI): (a) obese (BMI >= 30) and (b) non-obese (BMI < 30). Clinical and laboratory analyses we…

Follow-up of patients after revascularisation for peripheral arterial diseases: a consensus document from the European Society of Cardiology Working …

2019

International audience; Peripheral arterial diseases comprise different clinical presentations, from cerebrovascular disease down to lower extremity artery disease, from subclinical to disabling symptoms and events. According to clinical presentation, the patient's general condition, anatomical location and extension of lesions, revascularisation may be needed in addition to best medical treatment. The 2017 European Society of Cardiology guidelines in collaboration with the European Society for Vascular Surgery have addressed the indications for revascularisation. While most cases are amenable to either endovascular or surgical revascularisation, maintaining long-term patency is often chall…
