Retention of Carvacrol and Ethyl Acetate in Aqueous Gels of Potato Starch and Konjac Glucomannan

The partition coefficients of two volatile compounds in dispersions containing potato starch (PS) and/or konjac glucomannan (KGM) have been determined by the phase ratio variation method using equilibrium headspace analysis by gas chromatography. The influence of the moment when volatile compounds were added and the effect of the polysaccharide dispersions were investigated. For ethyl acetate, retention by KGM was based on viscosity effect. Retention of carvacrol was important when amylose was accessible. The addition of KGM to PS suspensions decreased the retention governed by interactions with starch.
Volatile constituents of Dianthus rupicola Biv. from Sicily: activity against microorganisms affecting cellulosic objects.

Dianthus rupicola Biv. (cliffs carnation) is a camephytic, suffruticous, perennial plant growing up to 40 cm high. The plant is widespread in Sicily and neighbouring islands (Egadi, Lampedusa, Lipari) and in some areas of southern Italy. GC and GC-MS analyses of the essential oil distilled from the flowers showed the presence of 66 components. Its composition is characterised by the high content of thymol and carvacrol derivatives. A good antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus and Bacillussubtilis, both infesting cellulosic historical material, was shown, whereas the antioxidant capacity was determined to be quite poor.

This study assessed the effect of temperature on the release of essential oil components incorporated by melt compounding into polymeric films. Specifically, polyethylene-co-vinylacetate (EVA) films containing carvacrol (CAR) and cinnamaldehyde (ALD), alone and in combination, were prepared and their surface and mechanical properties and antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were evaluated. Abstract The aim of the present study was to determine the chemical composition, antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of the essential oil of sawdust from root burl wood of T. articulata. Nine strains including 8 clinical isolates from catheters-related infections and one ATCC 25923 were tested. Twenty-seven different compounds were identified by GC–MS in the essential oil of T. articulata extracted by hydrodistillation. Abstract The essential oils of four Teucrium species were studied and 150 components, in all, were identified. All oils were rich in sesquiterpenes (50.1–55.8%).
