D^- mesic atoms
2011
The anti-D meson self-energy is evaluated self-consistently, using unitarized coupled-channel theory, by computing the in-medium meson-baryon T-matrix in the C=-1,S=0 sector. The heavy pseudo-scalar and heavy vector mesons, anti-D and anti-D^*, are treated on equal footing as required by heavy quark spin symmetry. Results for energy levels and widths of D^- mesic atoms in 12C, 40Ca, 118Sn and 208Pb are presented. The spectrum contains states of atomic and of nuclear types for all nuclei. anti-D^0--nucleus bound states are also obtained. We find that, after electromagnetic and nuclear cascade, these systems end up with the anti-D bound in the nucleus, either as a meson or as part of a exotic…
Development of a γ-γ-perturbed angular correlation one-detector method (1-PAC) for investigation of physico-chemical properties of matter
2002
Abstract A new method of the perturbed angular γ – γ -correlation (PAC) measurements was developed using one HPGe detector only (1-PAC). For quantifying the perturbation factor, the ratio R γ 1 + γ 2 of the summing peak composed of two cascade γ -rays (the perturbation-affected parameter) to the summing peak composed of one γ -ray and one X-ray (the perturbation non-affected parameter) was used. This method was demonstrated for the radionuclides 111 In and 111m Cd, identifying the chemical status of the radionuclides in aqueous solutions.
Quantitative X-ray diffraction phase analysis of airborne particulate collected by a cascade impactor sampler using the Rietveld full-pattern fitting…
1997
Samples of airborne particulate were collected at the “El Ingenio” site in Castellón (Spain) using a cascade impactor sampler. Quantitative analysis of present phases in the aerosol was performed using the full-pattern fitting Rietveld method. Quantitative information was obtained from refined individual scale factors and unit-cell volumes, obtained with a Rietveld refinement program. Quartz, calcite, and gypsum were encountered as major phases, and their size distribution and concentration in the atmosphere were calculated.
Ras family genes: An interesting link between cell cycle and cancer
2002
Ras genes are evolutionary conserved and codify for a monomeric G protein binding GTP (active form) or GDP (inactive form). The ras genes are ubiquitously expressed although mRNA analysis suggests different level expression in tissue. Mutations in each ras gene frequently were found in different tumors, suggesting their involvement in the development of specific neoplasia. These mutations lead to a constitutive active and potentially oncogenic protein that could cause a deregulation of cell cycle. Ras protein moderates cellular responses at several mitogens and/or differentiation factors and at external stimuli. These stimuli activate a series of signal transduction pathways that either can…

Understanding the Nature of the Molecular Mechanisms Associated with the Competitive Lewis Acid Catalyzed[4+2] and[4+3] Cycloadditions between Arylid…
2004
The molecular mechanisms of the reactions between aryliden-5(4H)-oxazolone 1, and cyclopentadiene (Cp), in presence of Lewis acid (LA) catalyst to obtain the corresponding [4+2] and [4+3] cycloadducts are examined through density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G* level. The activation effect of LA catalyst can be reached by two ways, that is, interaction of LA either with carbonyl or carboxyl oxygen atoms of 1 to render [4+2] or [4+3] cycloadducts. The endo and exo [4+2] cycloadducts are formed through a highly asynchronous concerted mechanism associated to a Michael-type addition of Cp to the beta-conjugated position of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl framework of 1.…
Step growth polymerization via tandem ene and diels-alder reactions
1997
In contrast to other electron deficient enophiles or dienophiles which react with 1,4-cyclohexadiene (1,4-CHD) under aromatization, 1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-diones react in a defined reaction sequence. In a first step the 1,4-cyclohexadiene reacts via an ene-reaction. The intermediately formed substituted 1,3-cyclohexadiene immediately reacts in a Diels-Alder reaction. The regiochemistry of the Diels-Alder reaction is controlled by the solvent polarity. This reaction sequence can be used to synthesize polymers. Low-molar-mass model compounds were synthesized to elucidate the stereochemistry of the polymers. By varying the bistriazolinedione, polymers with backbones of different rigidity are ava…

Search for ultrahigh-energy tau neutrinos with IceCube
2012
The first dedicated search for ultrahigh-energy (UHE) tau neutrinos of astrophysical origin was performed using the IceCube detector in its 22-string configuration with an instrumented volume of roughly 0.25 km3. The search also had sensitivity to UHE electron and muon neutrinos. After application of all selection criteria to approximately 200 live-days of data, we expect a background of 0.60±0.19(stat)+0.56−0.58(syst) events and observe three events, which after inspection, emerge as being compatible with background but are kept in the final sample. Therefore, we set an upper limit on neutrinos of all flavors from UHE astrophysical sources at 90% C.L. of E2νΦ90(νx)<16.3×10−8 GeV cm−2…
