Two rare cases of oral metastasis arising from lung adenocarcinoma and esophageal carcinoma

2020

Metastasis to the oral cavity are rare, representing only 1% of all oral malignancies, and originate from various sites such as the breast, prostate, lung and kidney. Clinically, they can simulate reactive and inflammatory lesions common in the oral cavity, and the clinical and microscopic diagnosis of these metastasis is a challenge. In this article, we report two new cases of esophageal and lung metastasis to oral tissues, highlighting their clinical characteristics and the process of diagnostic elucidation. We emphasize the importance for clinicians to consider the possibility of metastatic lesions in the oral cavity in patients previously diagnosed with malignant lesions in distant tiss…

Uterine preservation in pelvic organ prolapse and urinary stress incontinence using robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery. Case report

2020

Highlights • Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) represents a common and bothersome condition in parous women. • The demand to “save” the uterus has fuelled a renewal of the surgical technique. • Robotic surgery was conceived with the intent to overcome the limitations of laparoscopic surgery. • The characteristics of the robotic system help surgeons to perform conservative management of POP.

Acute appendicitis in a patient with situs viscerum inversus totalis: Role of laparoscopic approach. A case report and brief literature review

2020

Highlights • Abdominal pain due to acute appendicitis in one of the most causes of access to Emergency Room requiring surgical consult and treatment. • The occurrence of anatomical anomalies should be considered especially when clinical and imaging features are misleading. In these cases laparoscopic surgery can be a safe tool in order to confirm uncertain diagnosis. • We report a case of acute appendicitis in a 23-year-old Caucasian men with situs viscerum inversus detected on radiological investigation. • Laparoscopic approach was used to confirm the diagnosis and to perform appendectomy. Trocars placement was tailored for this peculiar case. • Situs viscerum inversus and midgut malrotati…

Successful Foley catheter tamponade of an epigastric vessel trocar injury in a toddler – A case report

2021

Highlights • Epigastric vessel injury is a well recognized complication during laparoscopic trocar placement. • Precautionary measures to prevent trocar induced injuries should be implemented to lower the incidence of this complication. • If this complication is encountered, tamponade by Foley catheter placement is an effective measure to provide hemostasis. • Hemorrhage control using a Foley catheter is feasible even in small children and toddlers.

Small bowel gastrointestinal stromal tumor presenting with gastrointestinal bleeding in patient with type 1 Neurofibromatosis: Management and laparos…

2021

Highlights • A multidisciplinary team is mandatory for the correct management of hemorrhagic GIST and its complications. • There is a well-known association between type 1 Neurofibromatosis and GIST. • Type 1 Neurofibromatosis-GIST and sporadic GIST have different behaviour. • In case of localised and resectable GIST surgical treatment is the mainstay. • Laparoscopic approach, if performed correctly, is safe and effective with better short-term outcomes then open surgery.

Cystic adenomyosis spreading into subserosal-peduncolated myoma: How to explain it?

2015

Abstract Introduction Cystic adenomyosis is a rare variant of adenomyosis characterized by well- circumscribed cavitated endometrial gland and stroma located within the myometrium. The cysts usually measure ≥ 1 cm in diameter, contain a “chocolate-colored” fluid and do not open into the overlaying endometrium. Case presentation We present a case of a peduncolated-subserosal cystic adenomyoma, namely cystic adenomyosis, correlated with pelvic MR imaging, laparoscopic surgery technique and histopathology findings. Conclusions In this case, the peculiar growth pattern of cystic adenomyosis in a myoma represents a singular condition rarely reported in the medical literature. We therefore suppor…

The colovescical fistula in diverticular disease: Laparoscopic approach in two different cases

2020

Highlights • The colovescical fistula is one of the complications of diverticular disease. • It can cause typical symptoms like pneumaturia and fecaluria affecting the quality of life and sometimes leading to death, usually secondary to sepsis. • We studied two patients with clinical, radiological and endoscopic diagnosis of colovescical fistula as a consequence of diverticular disease. • We performed a totally laparoscopic treatment with colonic resection and closure of the fistula with intracorporeal sutures. • The presence of a colovescical fistula significantly increases the difficult of the laparoscopic colonic resection.

Combined endo-laparoscopic treatment of large gastrointestinal stromal tumor of the stomach: Report of a case and literature review

2020

Highlights • We report a case of 75-year-old Caucasian men with unknown voluminous gastric GIST, who came to our attention complaining melena. We decided to perform a laparoscopic-endoscopic combined surgical approach. • Intraoperative endoscopy identified gastric GIST and confirmed the submucosal origin and the integrity of the capsule. A 10 cm laparoscopic gastrotomy was carried out along the gastric found in order to realize a laparo-endoscopic rendez-vous technique. • Laparoscopy has rapidly become a preferable approach for gastric GISTs surgical treatment. The magnified view and the lesser invasiveness of laparoscopic technique allow the surgeon to perform a more meticulous dissection,…

Recombinant activated factor VII administration in a patient with congenital lack of factor VII undergoing laparoscopic hysterectomy: A case report

2021

Highlights • Patients with lack of factor VIIa, suffering from abnormal uterine bleedings can be treated with laparoscopic hysterectomy. • Technique using bipolar coagulation and non-absorbable clips is safe and not time consuming. • Pre-operative loading with recombinant factor VIIa must be followed by prolonged supplementation in post-operative period. • We present suggested dosage and length of factor VIIa supplementation based on literature review and own experience.
