Avoidance of Overtreatment of Rectal Cancer by Selective Chemoradiotherapy: Results of the Optimized Surgery and MRI-Based Multimodal Therapy Trial.
2020
Background Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in patients with rectal cancer carries a high risk of adverse effects. The aim of this study was to examine the selective application of nCRT based on patient risk profile, as determined by MRI, to find the optimal range between undertreatment and overtreatment. Study Design In this prospective multicenter observational study, nCRT before total mesorectal excision (TME) was indicated in high-risk patients with involved or threatened mesorectal fascia (≤1 mm), or cT4 or cT3 carcinomas of the lower rectal third. All other patients received primary surgery. Results Of the 1,093 patients, 878 (80.3%) were treated according to the protocol, 526 pat…
Oral lesions in patients with primary Sjögren?s syndrome. A case-control cross-sectional study
2019
Background To evaluate the presence of oral lesions in a group of patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) and compare these results with a matched control group (CG). Material and Methods An observational cross-sectional study was conducted. 61 pSS patients (60 women, 1 man, mean age 57.64±13.52) diagnosed according to the American European Criteria (2002), and 122 matched control patients (120 women, 2 men, mean age 60.02±13.13) were included. Demographic and medical data, oral lesions and salivary flow rate were collected. Results Compared with the controls, pSS patients were 3.95 more likely to have oral lesions (OR 3.95; 95% CI 2.06-7.58; p=0.0001). 57.4% pSS patients presented o…
An electrophysiological study of dyslexic and control adults in a sentence reading task.
2002
Event-related potentials and cued-recall performance were used to compare dyslexic and control adult subjects. Sentences that ended either congruously or incongruously were presented visually, one word at a time, at fast (stimulus-onset-asynchrony (SOA)=100 ms) or slow (SOA=700 ms) rates of presentation. Results revealed (1) a large effect of presentation rate that started with the N1-P2 components and lasted for the entire recording period, (2) larger N400 components for dyslexic than control subjects, at slow presentation rates, to both congruous and incongruous endings and (3) a large ERPs difference related to memory (Dm effect) that did not differentiate controls from dyslexics but was…
Serum irisin levels, precocious myocardial infarction, and healthy exceptional longevity.
2014
Abstract Background Skeletal muscles produce irisin. Growing controversy exists on the association between this myokine and chronic disease risk. On the basis of the potential protective effects that irisin could exert on both vascular function and skeletal muscle mass, we hypothesized that an elevated level of this molecule may contribute to successful aging. Methods Serum irisin levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in disease-free centenarians, young healthy controls, and patients with precocious acute myocardial infarction. Results We found the highest levels of serum irisin in disease-free centenarians (35.3 ± 5.5 ng/mL) compared with young healthy controls (20.7…
Elevated serum levels of IGF-binding protein 2 in patients with non-seminomatous germ cell cancer: correlation with tumor markers alpha-fetoprotein a…
2008
Background/aimsAlterations of the IGF system have been described in several different types of cancer. However, no information is available about the role of the IGF system in patients with non-seminomatous germ cell cancer.MethodsFree IGF-I, IGF-II, acid-labile subunit, and IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) 1–4 were analyzed by specific RIAs in 32 patients with untreated non-seminomas and compared with IGFBP levels of 38 healthy controls. Serum IGFBPs were analyzed by western ligand blotting (WLB) and immunoblotting. In 16 patients, IGFBP profiles were measured before, during, and after treatment.ResultsIn patients with testicular cancer, IGF-II levels were on average 1.44-fold higher than in …
Urinary adiponectin excretion rises with increasing albuminuria in type 1 diabetes
2013
Urinary adiponectin (u-adiponectin) excretion has been suggested to reflect early glomerular damage. Inspired by this, we studied the levels of u-adiponectin in type 1 diabetic patients with different levels of urinary albumin excretion (UAE).U-adiponectin was analysed by ELISA in type 1 diabetic patients: Fifty-eight with normoalbuminuria (30mg albumin/24h), 43 with persistent microalbuminuria (30-300mg/24h) and 44 with persistent macroalbuminuria (300mg/24h). For comparison, a control group of 55 healthy individuals was included.U-adiponectin increased with increasing levels of UAE (p0.01). U-adiponectin median (interquartile range): Normoalbuminuria 0.38 (0.14-1.31), microalbuminuria 1.1…
Altered glutathione system is associated with the presence of distal symmetric peripheral polyneuropathy in type 2 diabetic subjects.
2015
Abstract Distal symmetric peripheral polyneuropathy (DSPN) is a highly prevalent complication of diabetes. However, underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are multiple and not well understood. The aim of our study was to analyze the oxidative stress levels in circulating mononuclear cells by measuring the glutathione system, malondialdehyde and oxidized-LDL, in 60 type 2 diabetic patients from a well-characterized cohort of 196 type 2 diabetic patients. Using a nested case–control design, we studied 30 type 2 diabetic patients with distal symmetric polyneuropathy and 30 diabetic controls without this complication, according to the Neuropathy Disability Score. We have found that diabetic p…
Perceptual Pseudoneglect in Schizophrenia: Candidate Endophenotype and the Role of the Right Parietal Cortex
2013
Several contributions have reported an altered expression of pseudoneglect in psychiatric disorders, highlighting the existence of an anomalous brain lateralization in affected subjects. Surprisingly, no studies have yet investigated pseudoneglect in first-degree relatives (FdR) of psychiatric patients. We investigated performance on “paper and pencil” line bisection (LB) tasks in 68 schizophrenic patients (SCZ), 42 unaffected FdR, 41 unipolar depressive patients (UP), and 103 healthy subjects (HS). A subgroup of 20 SCZ and 16 HS underwent computerized LB and mental number line bisection (MNL) tasks requiring judgment of prebisected lines and numerical intervals. Moreover, we evaluated, in …
Endothelin-1 and F2-isoprostane relate to and predict renal dysfunction in hypertensive patients.
2008
Background. Hypertension and additional non-traditional risk factors can damage the kidney directly and by promoting atherogenesis. Evidence indicates that increased oxidative stress and inflammation may mediate a large part of the effects of risk factors on the kidney. We hypothesized that in hypertensive patients (HT), oxidative stress, measured as 8-ISO-prostaglandin F2alpha (8-ISO-PGF2alpha), should raise paralleling decreasing renal function and should correlate with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Methods. In 626 HT with renal function ranging from stages 1 to 5 and 100 healthy controls, plasma levels of 8-ISO-PGF2alpha, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP), transfor…
Risk factors for neuroblastoma at different stages of disease. Results from a population-based case-control study in Germany
2001
Neuroblastoma is one of the childhood cancers included in two recent population-based case-control studies in West Germany. Altogether, 183 children under the age of 8 with neuroblastoma diagnosed in 1988-1994 and 1785 control children sampled from population registration files participated. Information on potential risk factors was obtained from the children's parents by a self-administered questionnaire and subsequent telephone interview. We observed positive associations with the use of oral contraceptives or other sex hormones during pregnancy (particularly with male offspring), a shorter gestational duration, lower birth weight, and maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy. While …
