Different a-casein association states and their interaction with lipid vesicles to study antibacterial activity

The interactions between caseins and lipid membranes are fundamental for the physiological function of these proteins. Moreover, the understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms is of great interest for the development of new casein derived antimicrobial peptides. Indeed, it was already shown that peptides derived from caseins possess antibacterial activity but their mechanisms of action is still debated. Here, we present an experimental study on the interaction between model lipid membranes and a-casein by means of spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy techniques. a-casein is an unfolded protein that due to its amphiphilic nature is known to self-assembly into non-stable micella…

Morte improvvisa nell'acqua: problemi diagnostici. Presentazione di un caso

2013

Incidentaloma Surrenalico. Caso di Sindrome di Cushing subclinica.

2004

The authors describe a case of adrenal incidentaloma that was the cause of subclinical Cushing's syndrome and take the opportunity to weigh up some of the clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects. Besides the particular expression of the symptoms which were difficult to interpret before reaching a diagnosis, the authors describe the diagnostic work-up adopted, aimed at precisely identifying the type of tumour and the surgical procedure implemented laparoscopically, the outstanding validity of which is confirmed compared to traditional adrenalectomy techniques.

Bone marrow-derived progenitors are greatly reduced in patients with severe COPD and low-BMI.

2009

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients have reduced circulating hemopoietic progenitors. We hypothesized that severity of COPD parallels the decrease in progenitors and that the reduction in body mass index (BMI) could be associated with more severe bone marrow dysfunction. We studied 39 patients with moderate to very severe COPD (18 with low-BMI and 21 with normal-BMI) and 12 controls. Disease severity was associated to a greater reduction in circulating progenitors. Proangiogenetic and inflammatory markers correlated with disease severity parameters. Compared to normal-BMI patients, low-BMI patients showed: greater reduction in circulating progenitors; higher VEGF-A, VEGF-C…

A two-stage genome-wide association study of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

2009

The cause of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is largely unknown, but genetic factors are thought to play a significant role in determining susceptibility to motor neuron degeneration. To identify genetic variants altering risk of ALS, we undertook a two-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS): we followed our initial GWAS of 545 066 SNPs in 553 individuals with ALS and 2338 controls by testing the 7600 most associated SNPs from the first stage in three independent cohorts consisting of 2160 cases and 3008 controls. None of the SNPs selected for replication exceeded the Bonferroni threshold for significance. The two most significantly associated SNPs, rs2708909 and rs2708851 …

Mutual inductance for an explicitly finite number of turns

2011

Published version of an article published in Progress In Electromagnetics Research B, 28, 273-287. Also available from the publisher at http://www.jpier.org/pierb/pier.php?paper=10110103 Non coaxial mutual inductance calculations, based on a Bessel function formulation, are presented for coils modelled by an explicitly finite number of circular turns. The mutual inductance of two such turns can be expressed as an integral of a product of three Bessel functions and an exponential factor, and it is shown that the exponential factors can be analytically summed as a simple geometric progression, or other related sums. This allows the mutual inductance of two thin solenoids to be expressed as an…
