Iron is an essential nutrient that participates as a redox co-factor in a broad range of cellular processes. In response to iron deficiency, the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae induces the expression of the Cth1 and Cth2 mRNA-binding proteins to promote a genome-wide remodeling of cellular metabolism that contributes to the optimal utilization of iron. Cth1 and Cth2 proteins bind to specific AU-rich elements within the 3'-untranslated region of many mRNAs encoding proteins involved in iron-dependent pathways, thereby promoting their degradation. The July 2003 Case of the Month (COM). A 62-year-old female patient experienced progressive muscular weakness over the last ten years, involving shoulder and pelvic girdle muscles, paraspinal and facial muscles. A biopsy was taken from the left deltoid muscle where hepatitis vaccination had taken place 4 weeks previously. The specimen revealed macrophagic myofasciitis due to the injection of aluminium-bound vaccines. The finding can be reproduced experimentally by injecting vaccines in rats. The pathomechanism is supposed to involve immune stimulation due to long term persistence of the adjuvant. Abstract The marine demosponge Geodia cydonium encodes a gene, termed GCXPB , which displays 62% identity to the human XPB/ERCC-3 gene that specifically corrects the repair defect in xeroderma pigmentosum and in Cockayne's syndrome. The cDNA was isolated and characterized the deduced aa sequence, XPB_GEOCY, with the calculated size of 91,541 Da comprises the characteristic domains found in the related helicases. Dosage compensation in Drosophila is mediated by a complex of proteins and RNAs called the "compensasome." Two of the genes that encode proteins of the complex, maleless (mle) and males-absent-on-the-first (mof), respectively, belong to the DEAH helicase and MYST acetyltransferase gene families. We performed comprehensive phylogenetic and structural analyses to determine the evolutionary histories of these two gene families and thus to better understand the origin of the compensasome. Moral Language in Child Protection Research

This article is based on a philosophical analysis of moral language in academic journal articles that concern child death cases. The analysis shows that research of child protection is a value-committed practice, and the language use reflects this in various ways. Direct moral language is relatively rare, and moral values are often implicitly referred to. Values in social work research bear resemblance to moral philosophical stances. peerReviewed

WRN protects against topo I but not topo II inhibitors by preventing DNA break formation

The Werner syndrome helicase/3′-exonuclease (WRN) is a major component of the DNA repair and replication machinery. To analyze whether WRN is involved in the repair of topoisomerase-induced DNA damage we utilized U2-OS cells, in which WRN is stably down-regulated (wrn-kd), and the corresponding wild-type cells (wrn-wt). We show that cells not expressing WRN are hypersensitive to the toxic effect of the topoisomerase I inhibitor topotecan, but not to the topoisomerase II inhibitor etoposide. This was shown by mass survival assays, colony formation and induction of apoptosis. The Code of Criminal Procedure of 1928 provided three types of jurisdiction: material, topical and functional. In general, legal solutions adopted in the Code including provisions on material jurisdiction should be viewed positively.
