Interbank lending and the spread of bank failures: A network model of systemic risk

2012

We model a stylized banking system where banks are characterized by the amount of capital, cash reserves and their exposure to the interbank loan market as borrowers as well as lenders. A network of interbank lending is established that is used as a transmission mechanism for the failure of banks through the system. We trigger a potential banking crisis by exogenously failing a bank and investigate the spread of this failure within the banking system. We find the obvious result that the size of the bank initially failing is the dominant factor whether contagion occurs, but for the extent of its spread the characteristics of the network of interbank loans are most important. These results ha…

Fitting random cash management models to data

2019

Abstract Organizations use cash management models to control balances to both avoid overdrafts and obtain a profit from short-term investments. Most management models are based on control bounds which are derived from the assumption of a particular cash flow probability distribution. In this paper, we relax this strong assumption to fit cash management models to data by means of stochastic and linear programming. We also introduce ensembles of random cash management models which are built by randomly selecting a subsequence of the original cash flow data set. We illustrate our approach by means of a real case study showing that a small random sample of data is enough to fit sufficiently goo…

Research strategies for the improvement of cactuspear (Opuntia ficus-indica) fruit quality and production

1995

Abstract Cactus pear ( Opuntia ficus-indica L.) is cultivated worldwide for fruit production either in the subsistence agriculture of dryland areas or as a cash crop. However, little horticultural research has been devoted to this species so far. Research needs related to reproductive biology as well as productivity and orchard management are outlined. A better knowledge of the environmental influence on reproductive biology and fruit quality, the control of fluctuations in plant cropping, as well as the reduction of seed number and size, are the major challenges for future research. Cactus pear will transcend the ethnical markets only if adequate marketing strategies can be promoted and fr…

Go Cashless! Mobile Payment Apps Acceptance in Developing Countries: The Jordanian Context Perspective

2022

Despite the expanding global usage of mobile phones in money transactions, the adoption of mobile payment systems in Jordan remains slow. This study employed the technology acceptance model (TAM) to identify the factors with a potential impact on mobile payment systems acceptance. The impact of perceived privacy (PP) and the mediating function of perceived certainty (PC) on the behavioral intention (BI) of mobile payment systems among Jordanian ministries were examined. Data obtained from 270 respondents were analyzed using partial least-squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The empirical findings show a positive link between perceived usefulness (PU) and PC on the BI of mobile pa…

Sustainability of Public Pension Systems

2020

The aim of this chapter is to review the main instruments and indicators used to measure the sustainability of PAYG pension systems. It will distinguish between defined contribution and defined benefit systems, due to the various implications that each of them has. It will also be necessary to review the different types of sustainability instruments, for example, those based on cash criteria, financial criteria set by the economic cycle and actuarial criteria. For the actuarial criteria, we will review the criteria of the internal rate of return (IRR) and the actuarial balance. Subsequently, we will review which countries publish official pension system sustainability data and what kind of …

Polycrystalline TiO2 impregnated with cardanol-based porphyrins for the photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol

2004

Hydrogenated cardanol (3-n-pentadecylphenol), a renewable organic resource obtained by vacuum distillation of roasted “cashew nut shell liquid” (CNSL), a by-product of the cashew industry, has been used to synthesize novel lipophilic porphyrins. Polycrystalline TiO2 impregnated with these novel “cardanol-based” porphyrins as sensitizers has been investigated in the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in aqueous suspension. The results indicated that the presence of the sensitizer enhances the photoactivity of polycrystalline bare TiO2 in the process. The activating effect was higher in the case of the Cu-complex.

Economic analysis of different supporting policies for the production of electrical energy by solar photovoltaics in western European Union countries

2010

Abstract Within various renewable energy technologies, photovoltaics (PV) today attracts considerable attention due to its potential to contribute a major share of renewable energy in the future. However, PV market development is, undoubtedly, dependent on the political support of any given country. In this paper, after a brief analysis of national support policies in PV technology in western European Union (EU) countries, the authors perform an economic analysis of the main support mechanisms as implemented in the same countries, based on the calculation of the cash flow, the Net Present Value (NPV) and the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) indices. The analysis shows that in some situations s…

The Connectivity of Information for the Integrated Reporting

2013

The purpose of this chapter is to shed light on the guiding principle of connectivity of information which the Integrated Reporting Framework presents as a way of translating the integrated thinking into action. In doing so, the chapter moves from the analysis of the main reports that are a source of information for Integrated Reporting, defining them as “partial” reports because they represent only a part of the comprehensive value creation story. The ways in which these reports are aggregated and/or integrated during the process of construction of an Integrated Report have the potential to affect the level of connectivity of information. In addressing these issues, the chapter proposes th…

Assessing the economic profitability of Paulownia as a biomass crop in Southern Mediterranean area

2022

The increase of renewable energy production worldwide, occurred in the last years, is also attributable to some agroforestry species cultivated according to the short rotation coppice technique. Although these species are able of enhancing abandoned or marginal land leading to numerous environmental benefits, an increasing number of farmers are introducing them in place of agricultural crops. Therefore, since for a farmer economic sustainability is one of the main factors to introduce a biomass crop, the study aimed at evaluating the profitability of Paulownia, a species that has been spreading in recent years. In particular, an economic analysis has been carried out in a Southern Italian f…
