Voicing the Subaltern in African-American and Dalit Women's Autobiographies

This paper aims to analyse two major autobiographies of Dalit women's literature and African American women's writing - Karukku (1992) by Bama Faustina and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861) by Harriet A. Jacobs - to bring forth the similarities between these two groups of subaltern women. Through the means of autobiography, both writers transmit their own experiences and denounce the gender, race and caste oppression endured. The subaltern theory coined by Antonio Gramsci and developed by Gayatri Spivak will be used to analyse these texts and the way they establish a link between two different worlds as well as how they share the common objective of making their narrators' exclus…

Le vestigia del sistema distributivo idrico in uso a Palermo fino agli inizi del ventesimo secolo, sono ancora oggi visibili in alcune vie cittadine. Sono i castella dividicula, ovvero bacini di raccolta e distribuzione idrica. I castella dividicula comprendevano un sistema di urne, torri e castelletti posti ad un livello piezometrico equivalente alla quota della sorgente, sfruttando il principio dei vasi comunicanti. Il perpetuarsi del disuso e l’intensificarsi dell’attività edificatoria ha fatto si che molti di questi manufatti scomparissero inglobati all’interno di fabbricati, cortili, pozzi luce, o abbandonati come ruderi all’angolo di una piazza o lungo una via. This contribution describes and compares three plans of Castellaccio respectively from 1739, from end-18th and end-19th century. The comparison shows the difference between the ancient surveys, which aim to provide an ideal image, and the modern ones, which document reality and represent it scientifically.

L’antico castello di Castellammare, edificato lungo la costa tra Palermo e Trapani, in età moderna fu del tutto ricostruito e ampliato; intorno al 1531 venne inoltre realizzata una torre cilindrica contenete una rilevante scala a chiocciola a “occhio aperto”, che si distingue per la cura dei dettagli stereotomici.
