Filecasting for streaming content delivery in IP datacast over DVB-H systems
2008
In this paper we investigate the potential gain that can be obtained in DVB-H by delivering streaming content as a succession of time-constrained flies using Application Layer - Forward Error Correction (AL-FEC) for improving the reception for mobile terminals. Compared to the conventional approach with link layer MPE-FEC, this technique allows to increase the robustness of the DVB-H transmission not only as a function of the capacity devoted for error repair (FEC overhead), but also as a function of the number of data bursts coded jointly ("file" or, source data block, size). The main drawback of this approach is an increase of the network latency proportional to the source block size, tha…
Direct chill casting of aluminium alloys under electromagnetic interaction by permanent magnet assembly
2018
Direct chill casting is one of the methods used in industry to obtain good microstructure and properties of aluminium alloys. Nevertheless, for some alloys grain structure is not optimal. In this study, we offer the use of electromagnetic interaction to modify melt convection near the solidification interface. Solidification under various electromagnetic interactions has been widely studied, but usually at low solidification velocity and high thermal gradient. This type of interaction may succeed fragmentation of dendrite arms and transport of solidification nuclei thus leading to improved material structure and properties. Realization of experimental small-scale crystallizer and electromag…
Global Demand for Paper Products: 2006–2050
2012
Our aim is to formulate and present global demand forecasts for several paper products for the main regions of the world for the period 2005-2050. Our forecasts, while based on standard regression modeling, differ from existing ones in that they are based not only on historical observed consumption patterns and projections of economic growth, but also take into account changes in the demographic constitution of countries and regions, and incorporate the assumption that beyond certain level economic prosperity (here in terms of GDP per capita) does not translate into increased demand for paper products. Our key results are threefold. First, the demand for paperboard and hygiene products will…
Novel Energy Modelling and Forecasting Tools for Smart Energy Networks
2015
A novel Energy Modelling and Forecasting Tool (EMFT) has been adopted for use in the VIM SEN (Virtual Microgrids for Smart Energy Networks) project and this paper gives an insight of the techniques used to provide vital support to the energy market, in particular to energy aggregators. A brief description of one of the test sites where data has been collected for validation of the EMFT will be outlined and some examples shown. The information and predictions will then be used by a decision support system to dynamically adjust energy delivery and consumption, by giving advice to users and operators on actions they can take to obtain a better match between energy supply and demand that increa…
Machine learning methods to forecast temperature in buildings
2013
Efficient management of energy in buildings saves a very important amount of resources (both economic and technological). As a consequence, there is a very active research in this field. One of the keys of energy management is the prediction of the variables that directly affect building energy consumption and personal comfort. Among these variables, one can highlight the temperature in each room of a building. In this work we apply different machine learning techniques along with other classical ones for predicting the temperatures in different rooms. The obtained results demonstrate the validity of these techniques for predicting temperatures and, therefore, for the establishment of optim…
On the Real-Time Simulation and Control of the Continuous Casting Process
1990
Ll this paper we present a method for controlling in real-time the secondary cooling of the continuous casting machine. The method is based on the heat transfer model, which simulates the temperature distribution of the cast, and on the use of direct digital control (DDC). Off-line simulation results considering the control method is presented.

On the Control of the Secondary Cooling in the Continuous Casting Process
1987
Continuous casting is today replacing ingot casting as the major process for the production of steel in the form of slabs, blooms, billets etc. The complexity of this process is such that until recently innovations to machine design could only be tested by full scale runs on the production machine. This is extremely costly and in many cases production cannot be delayed for such tests to occur. For offering alternative means of testing new designs, numerical simulation models of the continuous casting process have been developed, especially during the last decade. We refer to conference proceedings [3], [5], [6] [16]. Furthermore we mention articles [4], [9], [13], [23], [24] concerning heat…
Real-time simulation and control system for the continuous casting process
2005
In this paper we present a real-time system which is used to simulate the unsteady-state continuous casting process and to control the secondary cooling water sprays. The aim of the control system is to keep the surface temperature of the slab constant with respect to time in spite of casting speed variations, and in this way minimize the formation of cracks in the final product. The simulator calculates the temperature distribution using a mathematical model based on a heat conduction formula with phase changes. The optimal spray water flow rates for each spray cooling zone will be calculated by minimizing the deviation between the target surface temperature and the calculated actual surfa…
