A stochastic dynamic model to evaluate the influence of economy and well-being on unemployment control

2018

[EN] This paper presents a stochastic dynamic mathematical model to study the evolution of the unemployment rate and other relevant related variables in a country. This model is composed by three basic interrelated subsystems: demographic, economic and wellbeing ones. A key aspect of this model is that it considers three UN well-being variables simultaneously: Human Development Index, Gender Empowerment Index and Gender Differentiation Index. These variables involve key concepts for human development, as Health, Education, Economy and Female Labor. With this model, the most outstanding variables found in the literature in relation with unemployment control can be used to design strategies a…

Small Wind Turbines: Specification, Design, and Economic Evaluation

2016

In this work, we consider various aspects of small wind turbines' (SWTs) design and operation. First, an extensive literature study is presented by considering SWTs specification, market statistics, the smart grid, and the prosumer concepts as well as the most important parameters affecting the efficiency of wind turbines. Then, both the literature review and series of coupled numerical simulations investigating impact of the chosen design solutions on small wind turbine operation are performed. It allowed objective evaluation of different design approaches, which in turn enabled the systematic identification of actual limitations as well as the opportunities for specific design solutions o…

How Will We React to the Discovery of Extraterrestrial Life?

2018

How will humanity react to the discovery of extraterrestrial life? Speculation on this topic abounds, but empirical research is practically non-existent. We report the results of three empirical studies assessing psychological reactions to the discovery of extraterrestrial life using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) text analysis software. We examined language use in media coverage of past discovery announcements of this nature, with a focus on extraterrestrial microbial life (Pilot Study). A large online sample (N = 501) was asked to write about their own and humanity’s reaction to a hypothetical announcement of such a discovery (Study 1), and an independent, large online sampl…

Impact of centrality on cooperative processes

2016

The solution of today's complex problems requires the grouping of task forces whose members are usually connected remotely over long physical distances and different time zones. Hence, understanding the effects of imposed communication patterns (i.e., who can communicate with whom) on group performance is important. Here, we use an agent-based model to explore the influence of the betweenness centrality of the nodes on the time the group requires to find the global maxima of NK-fitness landscapes. The agents cooperate by broadcasting messages, informing on their fitness to their neighbors, and use this information to copy the more successful agents in their neighborhood. We find that for ea…

Research and Implementation of Energy Dispersal Algorithm for DRM System

2020

The article investigates the randomization algorithm of the OFDM signal energy used in modern digital broadcasting systems. Transmission part of the DRM system was modeled in MATLAB/Simulink software environment, bit sequences allocation tests were conducted using the original information signal and the corresponding modulation symbols with a scrambling algorithm and without it.

Triblock SEBS/DVB crosslinked and sulfonated membranes: Fuel cell performance and conductivity

2021

[EN] A set of styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene triblock copolymer (SEBS) membranes with 10 or 25 wt.% divinyl-benzene (DVB) as a crosslinking agent were prepared and validated. Physicochemical characterization revealed suitable hydrolytic and thermal stability of photo-crosslinked membranes containing 25%wt. DVB and post-sulfonated. These compositions were evaluated in H2/O2 single cells, and electrical and proton conductivities were furtherly assessed. The membranes with the milder post-sulfonation showed greater proton conductivity than those with excessive sulfonation. In terms of electrical conductivity, a universal power law was applied, and the values obtained were low enough for bei…

Future perspectives in hepatocellular carcinoma.

2010

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common and lethal malignancies worldwide. Due to late diagnosis and advanced underlying liver cirrhosis, only limited treatment options with marginal clinical benefits have been available in up to 70% of patients. However, major progress has been achieved with regard to surveillance, early diagnosis, and multimodal treatment approaches during the last years leading to an improvement in prognosis. Particularly, the increasing knowledge of molecular hepatocarcinogenesis today provides the opportunity for targeted therapy. The multikinase inhibitor sorafenib has broadened the therapeutic horizon for patients with advanced disease and is current…

Current trends in solid-phase-based extraction techniques for the determination of pesticides in food and environment

2006

Solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedures for pesticide residues in food and environment are reviewed and discussed. The use of these procedures, which include several approaches such as: matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD), solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) and stir-bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), represents an opportunity to reduce analysis time, solvent consumption, and overall cost. SPE techniques differ from solvent extraction depending on the interactions between a sorbent and the pesticide. This interaction may be specific for a particular pesticide, as in the interaction with an immunosorbent, or non-specific, as in the way a number of different pesticides are adsorbed on apolar or…

Routing Algorithm for Maximizing Lifetime of Wireless Sensor Network for Broadcast Transmission

2018

In the article we discuss solutions of the maximum lifetime broadcasting problem in wireless sensor networks. Due to limited energy resources of the network nodes to find an optimal transmission route of the broadcasted data we minimize the maximum energy consumed by the nodes. We give an analytical solution of the problem in one dimensional regular sensor network for the point-to-point and point-to-multipoint data transmission scheme. We show that in such a network, when the cost of data transmission is a polynomial function of distance between transmitter and receiver, there exist solutions with an equal energy, i.e., all nodes of the network consume the same amount of energy. We assume t…

Stress transfer mechanism investigation in hybrid steel trussed-concrete beams by push-out tests

2014

Abstract Results of push-out tests carried out on Hybrid Steel Trussed–Concrete Beams (HSTCBs) before and after the concrete casting are presented and interpreted. Firstly, in order to check the ability of weldings before casting, tensile tests were performed on specimens reproducing different types of welded joints. Simplified design formulae were used to predict their ultimate strength. Secondly, results obtained by push-out tests on specimen representative of the beam before and after the concrete casting are presented and discussed. Finally, simplified analytical models proposed by the current European building code were adapted to the specific typology to roughly predict the ultimate s…
