Combined procedure for glaucoma and cataract: A retrospective study

Abstract To ascertain the long-term effects of a triple procedure in the case of coexisting cataract and glaucoma, we did a retrospective study of 93 eyes that had cataract extraction, IOL implantation, and trabeculectomy within a ten-year period. Mean follow-up was 32.4 ± 21.9 months. Mean postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) was significantly lower than preoperatively, even though fewer medications were being used. One year after surgery, 60% of eyes had a best corrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better with an average improvement of 3.8 Snellen lines. Purpose of review The possibility of using a monofocal IOL with accommodative ability allows refractive cataract surgery with a clearly decreased potential of photic phenomena. Cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in pediatric eyes remain controversial. Using a viscoadaptive viscoelastic agent, we implanted a modified capsular bending ring (CBR) as well as an acrylic IOL with a sharp-optic-edge design in the capsular bag. All operated eyes demonstrated a low postoperative inflammatory reaction and a clinically well-centered IOL. The band-shaped, sharp-edged CBR facilitates the creation of a sharp, discontinuous bend in the equatorial capsule, which prevents anterior and posterior capsule opacification. The diabetic cataract: an unusual presentation in a young subject: case report.

This case report concerns a 14-year-old female patient, whose insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus was displayed by one infrequent complication, the cataract. This is an unusual manifestation in a 14-year-old patient; indeed, there are many findings in experimental animals demonstrating the development of this complication by maintaining blood glucose levels above 12 mM. After surgical therapy, complete vision was recovered, but we think that an earlier diagnosis and therapy of metabolic derangement of diabetes may have avoided this complication.
Histological and ultrastructural study of corneal tunnel incisions using diamond and steel keratomes

Abstract Purpose: To study the morphology of corneal tunnel incisions using diamond and steel keratomes. Setting: Department of Ophthalmology, University of Giessen, Germany. Methods: Corneal tunnel incisions were performed in six human cadaver eyes using three types of diamond keratomes and a steel keratome. The incision profile and morphology were evaluated and compared using light and scanning electron microscopy. Results: The steel keratome caused more disruption of corneal stromal tissue, while the diamond keratomes produced a more regular, smoother incision.
