Quantitative comparison of motion history image variants for video-based depression assessment

2017

Abstract Depression is the most prevalent mood disorder and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Automated video-based analyses may afford objective measures to support clinical judgments. In the present paper, categorical depression assessment is addressed by proposing a novel variant of the Motion History Image (MHI) which considers Gabor-inhibited filtered data instead of the original image. Classification results obtained with this method on the AVEC’14 dataset are compared to those derived using (a) an earlier MHI variant, the Landmark Motion History Image (LMHI), and (b) the original MHI. The different motion representations were tested in several combinations of appearance-based …

Development and validation of the neighborhood environment walkability scale for youth across six continents

2019

Abstract Background The IPEN International Physical Activity and Environment Network Adolescent project was conducted using common study protocols to document the strength, shape, and generalizability of associations of perceived neighborhood environment attributes with adolescents’ physical activity and overweight/obesity using data from 15 countries. Countries did not use identical versions of the Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale for Youth (NEWS-Y) to measure perceived neighborhood environment attributes. Therefore, this study derived a measurement model for NEWS-Y items common to all IPEN Adolescent countries and developed a scoring protocol for the IPEN Adolescent version of t…

Are locally finite MV-algebras a variety?

2021

We answer Mundici's problem number 3 (D. Mundici. Advanced {\L}ukasiewicz calculus. Trends in Logic Vol. 35. Springer 2011, p. 235): Is the category of locally finite MV-algebras equivalent to an equational class? We prove: (i) The category of locally finite MV-algebras is not equivalent to any finitary variety. (ii) More is true: the category of locally finite MV-algebras is not equivalent to any finitely-sorted finitary quasi-variety. (iii) The category of locally finite MV-algebras is equivalent to an infinitary variety; with operations of at most countable arity. (iv) The category of locally finite MV-algebras is equivalent to a countably-sorted finitary variety. Our proofs rest upon th…

Do categorical representations modulate early perceptual or later cognitive visual processing? An ERP study.

2021

Abstract Encoding of perceptual categorical information has been observed in later cognitive processing like memory encoding and maintenance, starting around 300 ms after stimulus onset (P300). However, it remains open whether categorical information is also encoded in early perceptual processing steps (reflected in the mismatch negativity component; vMMN). The main goal of this study was to assess the influence of categorical information on both early perceptual (i.e., vMMN component) and later cognitive (i.e., P300 component) processing within one paradigm. Hence, we combined an oddball paradigm with a delayed memory task. We used five-dot patterns belonging to different categories even t…

Automatic regrouping of strata in the goodness-of-fit chi-square test

2019

Pearson’s chi-square test is widely employed in social and health sciences to analyze categorical data and contingency tables. For the test to be valid, the sample size must be large enough to provide a minimum number of expected elements per category. This paper develops functions for regrouping strata automatically no matter where they are located, thus enabling the goodness-of-fit test to be performed within an iterative procedure. The functions are written in Excel VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) and in Mathematica. The usefulness and performance of these functions is illustrated by means of a simulation study and the application to different datasets. Finally, the iterative use of …

Testing the group polarization hypothesis by using logit models

2002

This paper focuses on methodological aspects of group polarization research and has two well-defined parts. The first part presents a methodological overview of group polarization research together with an examination of the inadequacy, under certain circumstances, of the traditional parametric approach usually used to test this phenomenon based on pre-test/post-test means comparison across groups. It is shown that this approach will produce masks effects when groups are heterogeneous with regard to the observed change from pre-test to post-test. The second part suggests an alternative methodological approach based on logit models for the analysis of contingency tables from a categorization…

Descriptive Statistics

2009

A set of medical data is based on a collection of the data of individual cases or objects, also called observation units or statistical units. Every case, for example every study participant, patient, every experimental animal, every tooth or every cell shows comparable parameters (such as body weight, gender, erosion, pH). Each of these parameters, also called variables, has a specific parameter value (gender = male, age = 30 years, weight = 70 kg) for each observation unit (for example the patient). The aim of descriptive statistics is to summarize the data, so that they can be clearly illustrated (1–3). The property of a parameter is specified by its so-called scale of measure. Generally…

Polar Classification of Nominal Data

2013

Many modern systems record various types of parameter values. Numerical values are relatively convenient for data analysis tools because there are many methods to measure distances and similarities between them. The application of dimensionality reduction techniques for data sets with such values is also a well known practice. Nominal (i.e., categorical) values, on the other hand, encompass some problems for current methods. Most of all, there is no meaningful distance between possible nominal values, which are either equal or unequal to each other. Since many dimensionality reduction methods rely on preserving some form of similarity or distance measure, their application to such data sets…

Categorical Modeling Method of Intelligent WorkFlow

2018

A category as well as a model is a mixture of graphical information and algebraic operations. Therefore, category language seems to be the most general to describe the models. It can provide us with the features that must characterize both the DSL language and the Modeling Method concept.

Timed Sets, Functional Complexity, and Computability

2012

AbstractThe construction of various categories of “timed sets” is described in which the timing of maps is considered modulo a “complexity order”. The properties of these categories are developed: under appropriate conditions they form discrete, distributive restriction categories with an iteration. They provide a categorical basis for modeling functional complexity classes and allow the development of computability within these settings. Indeed, by considering “program objects” and the functions they compute, one can obtain models of computability – i.e. Turing categories – in which the total maps belong to specific complexity classes. Two examples of this are introduced in some detail whi…
