Update in unified terroir zoning methodologies

2018

International audience; The concept of terroir is based on the assumption that the quality and the typicity of an agricultural product are linked to its origin. The precise definition of an origin requires zoning. Because terroir expression in viticulture is largely driven by interactions between the vine and its natural environment, soil and climate play a key role in terroir zoning. For clarity, soil-based and climate-based zoning are presented separately in this paper. They are, however, ideally carried out simultaneously, because of the existence of multiple interactions between these terroir factors. Prior to the implementation of zoning, the objectives need to be carefully defined. Th…

Mooring Analysis of a Dual-Spar Floating Wind Farm With a Shared Line

2021

AbstractWind farms with shared mooring lines have the potential to reduce mooring costs. However, such wind farms may encounter complex system dynamics because adjacent wind turbines are coupled. This paper presents an analysis of the shared mooring system with a focus on the system natural periods. We first apply Irvine’s method to model both the shared line and the two-segment single lines. The response surface method is proposed to replace iterations of the catenary equations of the single lines, and a realistic single line design is presented for OC3 Hywind. Then, system linearization and eigenvalue analysis are performed for the wind farm consisting of two spar floating wind turbines, …

A decomposition approach to dual shuttle automated storage and retrieval systems

2016

[EN] Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) have become vital in today¿s distribution and production environments, however it remains necessary to equip them with more efficient operational control policies. Motivated by real situations encountered by companies employing AS/RS, the present paper studies a miniload AS/RS system, with a dual shuttle crane in which a set of storage and retrieval requests must be scheduled such that the prioritized waiting time is minimized. Dual shuttle cranes have received minimal academic attention and thus continue to pose new problems that must be solved. The miniload AS/RS problem is addressed by decomposing it into a location assignment and sequ…

Buckling and post-buckling analysis of cracked stiffened panels via an X-Ritz method

2019

Abstract A multi-domain eXtended Ritz formulation, called X-Ritz, for the analysis of buckling and post-buckling of stiffened panels with cracks is presented. The theoretical framework is based on the First-order Shear Deformation Theory and accounts for von Karman's geometric nonlinearities. The structure is modeled as assembly of plate elements. Penalty techniques are used to fulfill the continuity condition along the edges of contiguous elements and to satisfy essential boundary conditions requirements. The use of an extended set of approximating functions allows to model through-the-thickness cracks and to capture the crack opening and tip singular fields as well as the structural behav…

The magnitude of a product recall: offshore outsourcing vs. captive offshoring effects

2018

The escalation in product recalls in recent years is attributed to the rise of globalisation and associated challenges of offshoring. Extant SCM research suggests that product recalls have a significant negative impact on financial performance, but gaps exist relative to the managerial actions to minimise their impact. Recall response strategies have become more important in the press, given that a single recall may result in the mandatory withdrawal of millions of products from the market, with firms incurring enormous logistics costs and brand damage. In this study, we address this gap in the research, and using a measure of product recall defined as the volume of products withdrawn from …

Development Overview of a Smart Customizable Product

2018

Abstract This paper presents the development phases of a smart product that can be manufactured on a cyber physical production system. The intelligent product’s requirements are defined from the manufacturing perspective and then converted into technical product characteristics. Finally, we refined the technical characteristics to create a functional tablet with customizable hardware functionalities as a customizable product.

The minimum mean cycle-canceling algorithm for linear programs

2022

Abstract This paper presents the properties of the minimum mean cycle-canceling algorithm for solving linear programming models. Originally designed for solving network flow problems for which it runs in strongly polynomial time, most of its properties are preserved. This is at the price of adapting the fundamental decomposition theorem of a network flow solution together with various definitions: that of a cycle and the way to calculate its cost, the residual problem, and the improvement factor at the end of a phase. We also use the primal and dual necessary and sufficient optimality conditions stated on the residual problem for establishing the pricing step giving its name to the algorith…

Measuring the quality of humanitarian information products: Insights from the 2015 Nepal earthquake

2018

Information plays a critical role in humanitarian assistance. It has become a product that is shared for multiple purposes such as situational awareness, decision-making, coordination, reporting, and attracting funding. In the aftermath of sudden onset disasters, humanitarians are constrained with huge workload, time pressure, and uncertainties and thus, information products are often criticized with respect to quality issues. In this paper, we aim at developing an empirically grounded framework that can measure the quality of information products through accuracy, objectivity, completeness, and consistency. We validate the framework with the help of practitioners and apply it to the inform…

A continued fraction based approach for the Two-photon Quantum Rabi Model

2019

We study the Two Photon Quantum Rabi Model by way of its spectral functions and survival probabilities. This approach allows numerical precision with large truncation numbers, and thus exploration of the spectral collapse. We provide independent checks and calibration of the numerical results by studying an exactly solvable case and comparing the essential qualitative structure of the spectral functions. We stress that the large time limit of the survival probability provides us with an indicator of spectral collapse, and propose a technique for the detection of this signal in the current and upcoming quantum simulations of the model. E.L. acknowledges fruitful discussions with D. Braak. I.…
