Specific muscle-tendon architecture in elite Kenyan distance runners

2013

The Achilles tendon moment arm (MA_AT) and foot lever ratio (FLR) can play important roles for force production and movement economy during locomotion. This notion has become more relevant, and suggestion has been given that the Kenyan runners belonging to the world elite would have specific anatomical, mechanical, and functional properties in their lower limbs and that this feature could be responsible for their high running economy. The present study aimed to characterize the AT of elite Kenyan distance runners as compared with Japanese ones, and to examine the potential relationship with their running performance. Ultrasonography was used to measure AT cross-sectional area and AT soleus …

1999

Traditional elements of competitive differentiation are declining. As industries and firms worldwide face increasing competition, slower growth rates, and price pressures, greater attention is being placed on customer satisfaction. However the research in satisfaction never consider alternatives, when customer satisfaction is formed. It has been the approach of this paper to present an extension for this circumstance. Therefor the regret theory, a diversion of the expectation utility theory, is used to explain the phenomena. According to this theory, each outcome has associated with it the evaluation of the difference between the outcome and the outcome that would have been received had a d…

OHP-041 Formulary Decision-Making For Biosimilars: Considerations For Hospital Pharmacists

2013

Background It has been 6 years since the first biosimilar was approved for use in the European Union (EU). Given the likelihood that biosimilar monoclonal antibodies will be approved in Europe in the near future, it is timely to review the formulary selection criteria for biologicals and biosimilars. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has issued guidelines that define the regulation of biosimilars in Europe and recommend approaches to establish biosimilarity. However, several questions regarding the assessment of biosimilars for formulary inclusion remain unanswered, including those related to manufacturing and drug supply. Purpose To aid hospital pharmacists in developing evaluation crite…

Adaptive dual control in one biomedical problem

2003

In this paper, the following biomedical problem is considered. People are subjected to a certain chemotherapeutic treatment. The optimal dosage is the maximal dose for which an individual patient will have toxicity level that does not cross the allowable limit. We discuss sequential procedures for searching the optimal dosage, which are based on the concept of dual control and the principle of optimality. According to the dual control theory, the control has two purposes that might be conflicting: one is to help learning about unknown parameters and/or the state of the system (estimation); the other is to achieve the control objective. Thus the resulting control sequence exhibits the closed…

Long-term graft function of adult rat and human islets encapsulated in novel alginate-based microcapsules after transplantation in immunocompetent di…

2005

We describe the results of the first study to show that adult rat and human islets can be protected against xenogenic rejection in immunocompetent diabetic mice by encapsulating them in a novel alginate-based microcapsule system with no additional permselective membrane. Nonencapsulated islets lost function within 4–8 days after being transplanted into diabetic Balb/c mice, whereas transplanted encapsulated adult rat or human islets resulted in normoglycemia for >7 months. When rat islet grafts were removed 10 and 36 weeks after transplantation, the mice became immediately hyperglycemic, thus demonstrating the efficacy of the encapsulated islets. The explanted capsules showed only a …

Mechanical–biological waste treatment and the associated occupational hygiene in Finland

2004

A special feature of waste management in Finland has been the emphasis on the source separation of kitchen biowaste (catering waste); more than two-thirds of the Finnish population participates in this separation. Source-separated biowaste is usually treated by composting. The biowaste of about 5% of the population is handled by mechanical-biological treatment. A waste treatment plant at Mustasaari is the only plant in Finland using digestion for kitchen biowaste. For the protection of their employees, the plant owners commissioned a study on environmental factors and occupational hygiene in the plant area. During 1998-2000 the concentrations of dust, microbes and endotoxins and noise level…

Exposure of the Croatian adult population to acrylamide through bread and bakery products

2019

The aim of the present study was to determine and compare the levels of acrylamide in different types of bread and bakery products using a LC– MS/MS method, before and after the new European regulation on acrylamide reduction (Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/2158) became valid. Also, one of the aim was to estimate the average exposure to acrylamide through this food category. Of the total of 100 analysed samples, acrylamide content ranged from below the limit of quantification (LOQ) to 237 μg/kg in the period before the application of a new European Regulation, and from <LOQ to 42 μg/kg after it's application. For the adult Croatian population the dietary mean exposure to acrylamide in brea…

Beyond islet trasplantation in diabetes cell terapy:from embryonic stem cells to transdifferentation of adult cells

2013

Exogenous insulin is, at the moment, the therapy of choice of diabetes, but does not allow tight regulation of glucose leading to long-term complications. Recently, pancreatic islet transplantation to reconstitute insulin-producing cells, has emerged as an alternative promising therapeutic approach. Unfortunately, the number of donor islets is too low compared with the high number of patients needing a transplantation leading to a search for renewable sources of high-quality -cells. This review, summarizes more recent promising approaches to the generation of new -cells from embryonic stem cells for transdifferentiation of adult cells, particularly a critical examination of the seminal work…
