Focused electron beam (FEB) and focused ion beam (FIB) technologies have opened novel paths for material science research and technology at the micro and nano scales in recent decades [...]
Manufacturing and testing of a metal supported Ni-YSZ/YSZ/La2NiO4 IT-SOFC synthesized by physical surface deposition processes
2017
International audience; The manufacture of the last generation metal supported IT-SOFC complete cell by dry surface deposition pro-cesses is really challenging. Atmospheric Plasma Spraying (APS) and Reactive Magnetron Sputtering (RMS) processes are respectively adapted to deposit Ni-YSZ anode and YSZ electrolyte layers. RMS is also used to coat a thin and dense La2NiO4 (LNO) cathode layer. In this work, we have realized a complete cell on metallic support (ITM) produced by PLANSEE SE. The innovative LNO cathode layer was compared with screen-printed LNO layers, with and without RMS bonding layer. Electrochemical and Voltammetry tests were performed on these samples. It reveals lower perform…
New prototypes for the isolation of the anodic chambers in microbial fuel cells
2016
This work has been focused on the assessment of new prototypes of MFC in which a more strict separation of the anode and cathode compartments is looked for, in order to attain strict anaerobic conditions in the anode chamber and hence, avoid lack of efficiency due to the prevalence of non-electrogenic competing microorganisms and to optimize composition of the anolyte and catholyte. A cylinder reactor with an inner chamber with graphite bars acting as anodes and the outer one with a stainless steel tube acting as cathode was used in three different configurations and results obtained during lifetests are compared in terms of electricity production, cathode oxygen consumption and anode COD d…
Comparison of Cu-B Alloy and Stainless Steel as Electrode Material for Microbial Fuel Cell
2019
The microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a technical devices that electricity produces during wastewater treatment. One of the problems of MFCs is a low current density. Thus, it is necessary to search for new electrodes for MFC. The comparison of Cu-B alloy and stainless steel as catalyst for MFCs cathode is presented in this paper. The research included measurements of the concentration of COD, NH4+ and NO3− in three types of reactors: without aeration, with aeration and with using a MFC (with Cu-B and stainless steel cathode). It has been shown that effectiveness of MFC with Cu-B electrode is higher than effectiveness of MFC with stainless steel electrode.
Mapping the 3D-surface strain field of patterned tensile stainless steels using atomic force microscopy.
2005
Abstract The quantification of microstructural strains at the surface of materials is of major importance for understanding the reactivity of solids. The present paper aims at demonstrating the potentialities of the atomic force microscopy (AFM) for mapping the three-dimensional surface strain field on patterned tensile specimens. Electron beam (e-beam) lithography has been used to deposit 16×16 arrays of gold-squared pads. Monitoring the evolution of such a pattern under applied strain allows to quantify the triaxial strains both at the micro-(plastic) domain and nanoscale (elastic) domain vs. applied strain. The proposed method was applied to stainless steels after 4.5% plastic strain.
Influence of the tip effect of a carbon nanostructure on low current electrical arc initiation
2009
During their setting off, circuit breakers and vacuum switch devices are accompanied by an electric arc whose physical and chemical properties are governed by emissive current sites at the cathode surface called cathode spots. Assuming the continuity of the current on the cathode surfaces, the cathode spots contribute to supply the electrical arc by electron emission and material ejection. Thus they cause erosion on the contact electrodes inducing a dysfunction of contactors. The apparition of these cathode spots is due essentially to dust particles and surface irregularities at different scales. This experimental work represents a contribution to the understanding of the electrical arc beh…
Investigation of ISIS and Brookhaven National Laboratory ion source electrodes after extended operation.
2012
Linac4 accelerator of Centre Européen de Recherches Nucléaires is under construction and a RFdriven H− ion source is being developed. The beam current requirement for Linac4 is very challenging: 80 mA must be provided. Cesiated plasma discharge ion sources such as Penning or magnetron sources are also potential candidates. Accelerator ion sources must achieve typical reliability figures of 95% and above. Investigating and understanding the underlying mechanisms involved with source failure or ageing is critical when selecting the ion source technology. Plasma discharge driven surface ion sources rely on molybdenum cathodes. Deformation of the cathode surfaces is visible after extended opera…
Degradation mechanisms in organic lead halide perovskite light-emitting diodes
2019
Organic–inorganic metal halide perovskites have attracted significant attention for low-cost, high-efficiency, color-pure light-emitting applications. However, as seen in many reports so-far, perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLED) suffer from poor operational lifetime, limiting their practical use. The underlying degradation mechanism is a topic of crucial importance. Here, the degradation mechanisms of methylammonium lead bromide based PeLED are investigated. When the PeLED is electrically biased, there is an initial raise in the luminance followed by a rapid reduction in luminance and current density. Microscopic studies reveal the formation of micrometer-sized spots that are photolumin…
The Engineering of Hot Carbon Nanotubes with a Focused Electron Beam
2004
Single-wall and multiwall carbon nanotubes at high temperature are irradiated with the focused electron beam in an electron microscope. Nanotubes can be tailored with monolayer precision, and new morphologies of nanotubes are created. Atoms from layers of multiwall tubes can be removed and the tubes can be bent by a predefined angle. Bundles of single-wall tubes are transformed locally to multiwall tubes with coherent transition between the two modifications.
Numerical Simulations of Nanogel Synthesis Using Pulsed Electron Beam
2019
In this work, a new method for numerical simulation of the radiation chemistry of aqueous polymer solutions exposed to a sequence of electron pulses is presented. The numerical simulations are based on a deterministic approach encompassing the conventional homogeneous radiation chemistry of water as well as the chemistry of polymer radicals. The multitude of possible reactions in the macromolecular system is handled by allowing for a large number of macromolecular species. The speciation of macromolecular species is done to account for variations in molecular weight, number of alkyl radicals per chain, number of peroxyl radicals per chain, number of oxyl radicals per chain, and number of in…
