A GOVERNMENT WITHOUT PRIDE. ANTONIO ROSMINI’S “CATHOLIC” MODERNITY

2020

Antonio Rosmini is considered one of the leading Catholic philosophers in modern age. His reflections on politics, law and society can be very useful in facing the challenges coming from the so-called populist movements. M. Nicoletti suggests, in his last work, to consider Rosmini’s conception of human person not only as theLeitmotivof his political philosophy but, broadly speaking, as the real chance to build a society in line with the great tradition of Modernity and Christian values.

God, Faith, and Death: The Impact of Biological and Religious Correlates on Mortality

2004

Marked denominational mortality differentials have been documented for various time periods and geographic locations. From a historical perspective, death rates among Catholics are often found to be higher than those among Protestants or Jews. Using a conceptual model based on the life history approach, biomedical and sociocultural factors of causation are extrapolated. In total, 5513 historical entries from family reconstitution were available. Selection of data was guided by the inclusion of information about religious affiliation. Only married couples with children as well as single mothers were considered. Of these, 1855 entries were of Roman Catholic (C), 1143 of Lutheran/Protestant (L…

Tra immanenza e trascendenza. Saggi teologico-politici su e oltre Carl Schmitt

2019

2015

«The first modern corporate experiment» was defined by what Pierre Louis Léon Harmel (1829-1915) had achieved in his yarn factory in Val des bois in the town of Warmeriville close to Rheims in the French department of Marne. Harmel was a French Catholic entrepreneur very sensitive to the social issues of his time. Harmel, while he was progressively turning away from the paternalism of his father, although he was nicknamed "le Bon Père", moved along the tracks of the social doctrine of the Church and the principles of social Catholicism, inspired in particular by Œuvre des Cercles by Rene La Tour du Pin and Albert de Mun. He decided to turn his factory in a kind of community where the basic …

Confessionalization and social discipline: two paradigms for the modern history

2019

Different Contexts of Sexual Abuse With a Special Focus on the Context of Christian Institutions: Results From the General Population in Germany.

2019

Recent revelations of the extent of sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church in Germany and the United States have once more triggered the debate about sexual abuse. Those inquiries identify cases that are known to authorities or have been recorded in these institutions. However, to assess the full magnitude of the problem, data beyond recorded or known cases are needed, as it can be assumed that a vast number of cases are not reported and are hence not included in such file reviews. Therefore, representative surveys are needed. The aim of the present study was to examine the prevalence of sexual abuse by priests and in different contexts in the German population based on a representative…

Modernità, secolarizzazione e metafisica. In dialogo (postumo) con Sergio Sarti

2022

‘Internationalizing Pearl Craigie’

2018

International audience; My presentation focuses on Pearl Craigie (aka John Oliver Hobbes), arguably a key figure of cosmopolitan fin de siècle. Born in the U.S. but educated in Britain and partly in France, Craigie became overnight famous with Some Emotions and a Moral in 1891 although the novella was published in Fisher T. Unwin’s Pseudonymous Series. In 1892 Craigie converted to Catholicism while embarking on a series of tales, plays, journalistic contributions including travelogues, and novels with a noted internationalistic vein. If her position within British Decadence is arguably debatable, her cosmopolitanism is not: from her personal networks to her literary writings including her j…
