Nitric Oxide-Scavenging Properties of Some Chalcone Derivatives

Abstract The implication of NO in many inflammatory diseases has been well documented. We have previously reported that some chalcone derivatives can control the iNOS pathway in inflammatory processes. In the present study, we have assessed the NO-scavenging capacity of three chalcone derivatives (CH8, CH11, and CH12) in a competitive assay with HbO2, a well-known physiologically relevant NO scavenger. Our data identify these chalcones as new NO scavengers. The estimated second-order rate constants (ks) for the reaction of the three derivatives with NO is in the same range as the value obtained for HbO2, with CH11 exerting the greatest effect. First report of the scavenging isopod Natatolana neglecta (Crustacea: Isopoda: Cirolanidae) feeding on a sea turtle

A juvenile male loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) was found dead in April 2015, entangled in a trammel net on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Post-mortem examination revealed the presence of ninety-five isopods dispersed in the coelomic cavity, and inside the oesophagus and skull. All individuals found scavenging on the sea turtle were identified as Natatolana neglecta (Hansen, 1890) (Isopoda: Cirolanidae). Genetic analysis of the isopod gut contents showed that they were feeding on turtle tissue, confirming that N. neglecta can also attack dead sea turtles. This study shows the value of cirolanids as potential indicators of the cause of death in stranded sea turtles.

We present some 2-isometric lifting and extension results for Hilbert space concave operators. For a special class of concave operators we study their Cauchy dual operators and discuss conditions under which these operators are subnormal. In particular, the quasinormality of compressions of such operators is studied.
Reversible stress-induced lipid body formation in fast twitch rat myofibers

We analyzed the existence of lipid bodies (LBs) in the fast twitch rat flexor digitorum brevis (FDB) myofibers and found that these structures were scarce. However, isolation procedure of the myofibers, heath shock, viral infection or the glycosylation inhibitor tunicamycin induced formation of the LBs, which were stationary structures flanking Z lines. We next infected FDB myofibers with recombinant Semliki Forest virus expressing caveolin 3-yellow fluorescent protein (cav3-YFP) since this chimeric protein was targeted to the LBs facilitating their further analysis. The plasma membrane of differentiated skeletal muscle fibers comprises the sarcolemma, the transverse (T) tubule network, and the neuromuscular and muscle-tendon junctions. We analyzed the organization of these domains in relation to defined surface markers, beta-dystroglycan, dystrophin, and caveolin-3. These markers were shown to exhibit highly organized arrays along the length of the fiber. Caveolin-3 and beta-dystroglycan/dystrophin showed distinct, but to some extent overlapping, labeling patterns and both markers left transverse tubule openings clear. A large body of evidence has suggested that the natural biology for symptomatic cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) is dynamic. These lesions exhibit a temporal clustering epiphenomenon and usually manifest with multispectral clinical patterns, the most relevant being hemorrhagic and seizurogenic events. Most patients with cerebral cavernous malformations are asymptomatic, and the lesions are detected as incidentalomas. However, association with the CCM3 gene, Zabramski type I and II lesions, and brainstem location have the propensity to increase the bleeding events. Caveolae represent membrane microdomains acting as integrators of cellular signaling and functional processes. Caveolins are involved in the biogenesis of caveolae and regulate the activity of caveolae-associated proteins. Although caveolin proteins are found in the CNS, the regulation of caveolins in neural cells is poorly described. In the present study, we investigated different modes and mechanisms of caveolin gene regulation in primary rat astrocytes.
