PTNet: A parameterizable data center network

2016

This paper presents PTNet, a new data center topology that is specifically designed to offer a high and parameterized scalability with just one layer architecture. Furthermore, despite its high scalability, PTNet grants a reduced latency and a high performance in terms of capacity and fault tolerance. Consequently, compared to widely known data center networks, our new topology shows better capacity, robustness, cost-effectiveness and less power consumption. Method for determining the proper expansion center and order for Mellin radial harmonic filters

Abstract A method to improve the behaviour of the Mellin radial harmonic (MRH) filters in scale invariant pattern recognition is presented. An algorithm has been introduced to obtain the proper expansion center and order of the MRH development of any object. The procedure consists of the suspression of the non-discriminant uniform background in the energy function of the target. Computer simulations are presented.

What Factors have an Influence on A Quality Teaching Practice in Sciences?

Abstract This paper aims to know to what extent in-service teachers who have not participated in science teaching training courses neither have performed any research in this field develop a quality teaching practice and what factors have influenced to achieve it. Questionnaires and non-participating observation protocols about the classroom work have been used as well as semi-structured interviews with a sample of teachers to obtain data. These instruments try to characterize the teaching action and determine what factors and in which degrees have influenced the performance of a quality science teaching activity.

Research Directions Profile in the Computing Museum of the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Latvia (IMCS)

The article describes the development of information technology in Latvia, in IMCS, to the middle of the 1990s. The history of IMCS represents the usage of computers in typical computing centers in the former Soviet Union and the transformation from computing center to research institution. It also represents Latvian collaboration with the Nordic countries that provided political, scientific, and technological support. Historical documents, computer parts, and photos are collected in the Computer Museum of IMCS.

Seismic Performance of Earthquake-Resilient RC Frames Made with HSTC Beams and Friction Damper Devices

Seismic behavior of RC frames with hybrid steel-trussed concrete beams is affected by panel zone damage due to a large amount of longitudinal reinforcement. Here the seismic efficiency of innovative frames characterized by friction damper devices (FDDs) at beam-to-column connections is compared against traditional frame. Three configurations are investigated: FDDs alone; FDDs with column-to-foundation connections having preloaded threaded bars and disk springs; FDDs with self-centering friction devices. Molecular parameters of hyperbranched polymers made by self-condensing vinyl polymerization. 1. Molecular weight distribution

The molecular weight distribution (MWD) and its moments are calculated for hyperbranched polymers formed by self-condensing vinyl polymerization (SCVP) of monomers (“inimers”) with the general structure AB*, where A is a vinyl group and B* is an initiating group. The calculated MWD is extremely broad, the polydispersity index (PDI) being equal to the number-average degree of polymerization:  Pw/Pn = Pn. It is twice as broad as that for the polycondensation of AB2 type monomers. If the fraction of unreacted monomer is not taken into account, the MWD becomes somewhat narrower, P‘w/P‘n ≈ 0.40P‘n. Structural relaxation of E_gamma centers in amorphous silica

2002

We report experimental evidence of the existence of two variants of the E' gamma centers induced in silica by gamma rays at room temperature. The two variants are distinguishable by the fine features of their line shapes in paramagnetic resonance spectra. These features suggest that the two E' gamma differ for their topology. We find a thermally induced interconversion between the centers with an activation energy of about 34 meV. Hints are also found for the existence of a structural configuration of minimum energy and of a metastable state.
